Considering the shape the club were in at the time after the 8-2 and under massive pressure for 4th place the way Arteta came in and steadied the veritable ship forming two very good partnerships with first Alex Song and secondly Aaron Ramsey where he reinvented himself as a holding midfielder, I'd be of the opinion he was pivotal to get us to where we are now. A season out of the Champions League could have been catastrophic. No Ozil, no Sanchez...

And all for £10m and we even stiffed him on wages.

Very good point. Hadn't really thought about that.

I think some people are mixing up "better player" and "better singings".

As you say, Arteta came at a crucial time, and filled a space exactly at the right time.

Aubameyang (SP?) just named as African footballer of the year... For what it's worth!

He also said after the ceremony, he wouldn't be leaving Dortmund!

Did he tho? I'm not so sure he was THAT important, don't get me wrong his 1st season was a good one, but he was a last minute panic buy and has only declined since his 1st season, I mean even still what exactly was he clinical In doing? Getting us to 4th? We've been done that for years and did It a few times with a far worse squad than the one we had that year.

Happy enough Alexis isn't being rushed back. We should have enough to beat Liverpool as is tbh and I'd rather have Alexis miss another couple of weeks and be tip top for the business end than rush him back and have him gone again for another 6 weeks

Sure let's save him til next season.

Arteta was consistently excellent performer for this first 3 seasons with us. It was only last year the decline was evident in terms of his ability at the highest level. He is still more than capable of doing a job for us against the likes of Sunderland at the weekend.

I think you really underestimate just how perilous a position we were in for the 11/12 season in which he came. He got 6 league goals that season; there's nothing to suggest we'd have replaced those without him and remember we only got 4th on the last day with a 3-2 win against WBA in which Fulop (RIP) gave us a veritable gift.

That particular squad from 11/12 was in fact the worst we had during AWs time at the club.

Sure let's save him til next season.

We've won 6 out of 7 while he was out. Rush him back against Liverpool and Stoke - maybe he aggravates it further and misses 8 weeks this time ruling him out of the Barcelona games a key chunk of the title race. And you know who'll be first on here whinging about Wenger flogging the players? Yourself.

Exactly, we've won 6 of 7 so why bring him back? Then again maybe he drops the TV remote on his foot and is out for 6 months.

You're just making stuff up really, it isn't a rest, it's taking him longer to get over the injury than originally expected. I'm not suggesting playing an injured player, I'm just not being delusional and trying to paint a setback as being a positive.

I think Arteta was a great buy.
Remember he came in just as Fabregas left.
In Artetas first few seasons he never had an expensive world class squad surronding him.
Arteta carried Arsenal all thru the time Wilshere, Ramsey were learning their trade and developing. He carried us all thru the time Gerbinho, Chamak, Sanogo were our front men outlets.
Ateta really had to play with some awful donkeys in his time.
He became club captain and passed on some experience to the young gunners.

Things would have been different if Wenger invested more in the squad and picked up some better players during Artetas first few seasons.

Personally, I only care that Sanchez is back for the Chelsea match in a couple of weeks. That's the one we're most likely to lose out of the next 3.

I was a big fan of Arteta when he played for Everton and when Cesc left I was delighted we signed him. The guy is a class act and whilst he is no longer a first choice he is a excellent player to have on the bench and as a backup and I have no doubt he is going to have a role in coaching at Arsenal as well.

    So, is Arteta playing tomorrow?

Better beat those boyos. I mean it.

Looks like Carragher did't get away with his criticism of Özil a few weeks back on MNF! Özil was asked what he likes most about living in England, and responded: Football passion, FairPlay on the stands, British humour and Jamie Carragher on TV :pac:

Only two things I'm not sure about the team

Will he play chambers in centre back or midfield?

Who will play the "10", I really don't no

Would be interesting to see how brave he will be. If he is resting only Ozil, I'd put Ramsey in there. If Ramsey and Ozil both rested, then I'd throw Campbell in there.

I think Campbell starts wed so I wouldn't I think he will go something like this

    Ospina

    Debuchy. GAB, belik/pleggy. Gibbs

    Arteta/chambers

    Iwobi. Ox. Jeff

    Walcott

Campbell, mert and flamini might start, can't see any of the others start though

Just saw the Liverpool starting eleven from last night???
Teams don't seem to be taking the Cup seriously for some years now.
This began when United were allowed to abstain from it years ago when they went to the World Club Finals.
It hasn't been the same since with teams fielding very weak sides.

    A. Liverpool had about a million injuries

    B. I don't care who "takes it seriously". I do, I still love it. Really want to win it again this year.

Would love to see us do the 3 in a row, it hasn't been done since the 1880s so would be a fantastic achievement.

Completely agree. I'd love to win it again. In fairness to Liverpool they've two tough league games coming up, us and United, and thirteen first team injuries. They've probably decided to concentrate resources on the capital one cup and the league this season as a sensible strategic decision. It doesn't devalue the FA Cup in the slightest.
After the league and the champions league it's the best competition to win.

Very strong line up. Pretty happy that Wenger's completely ditched this cup keeper nonsense.

Bit unlike Wenger to give a 4 year contract but he obviously knows how valuable he is.
