Ive been very critical of his fighting on here so for his own sake, I'm glad he made this choice. On the flip side, its a hell of an achievement for any fighter to get to compete in the UFC and much respect to any fighter who makes that walk to the cage in any promotion. He seems like a very nice decent fella too so I wish him all the best in whatever he chooses to do!

Just about sums up my feelings on him too.

Both as an amateur and pro he was never an exciting fighter to watch, but hats off and respect for his courage.

Salute to a courageous competitor and a terribly decent young man.

sums it up for me, a really sound chap who got the best out of himself and has achieved. A lot of people (myself hands up) were not mad on his stand up, a shame he did not box when he was in his early teens, "could have been someone" cause he had that heart and determination

Nothing but respect for the man and his achievements as a fighter. No doubt he will go on to great things in his life outside of MMA.

I was never his biggest fan but always respected him a lot. The 3 failed drug tests for his opponents (one at Middleweight too btw) is a fair point from McGregor, no shame in going 4-2 dodgy decisions aside. I thought he had time, that if he trained nothing but boxing or went to a kickboxing camp or something like that, but he must have felt it himself that there was too big of a gap standing.

He got a long way on heart and athleticism, you just can't have big holes in your game now.

To be fair to Cathal he has only been training MMA for about 6 years in total. He came from a Rugby background and had no martial arts training what so ever.

I dont think he had a single amateur fight and went straight into pro. He racked up a lot of wins against much more experienced fighters, he was the top Welterweight in Europe winning the Cage Warriors title after training for only 4 years, made it to the Ultimate Fighter and had 6 fights in the UFC and left on his own terms.

This is far more than most MMA fighters will do in their entire careers.

I am happy for him, he stuck at it while many like myself walked away thinking it was not realistic to get into the UFC. People like Cathal proved its was more than possible if you keep trying.

Met the guy in Boston, sound fella. Pity his talent didn't match his heart. No shame in a 4-2 Ufc record and at least he'll have some good stories for his grandkids.

I have to be honest and Im going to get lashed for saying this but I wont shy away and so stick to my convictions.

I have a fitness magazine at home and the last page is 20 questions with cathal and in one part he says " I cannot wait for a shot at exposing weidman" at the time I laughed out loud.

so I'm wondering why the loss of heart?? seems to me the oul pride took a beating and he got a wake up call last match. that coupled with an impending cut, after which, what's his options?????

Don't get me wrong, it takes fooking guts to get into a white collar match in the local pub even, more than your average joe can muster. But I just think it's a case that his heart was broke as well as his pride.

Maybe he was told "jump or get pushed"... who knows. Who *cares* in fact. He's retired and kinda like a death, general good manners would say not to poke to far into the causes or failings of the person.

Few sportsmen in Ireland achieve worldwide recognition in their sport, lets celebrate one who did.

Lot of speculation (even here) that he was getting cut and thats one of the reasons he jacked it in. Is there a genuine source for this or are people just talking out of their arses and guessing?

I certainly hadnt heard anything about him getting cut. Losing 2 on the trot is not usually enough to get a fighter cut after winning 4 in a row.

He's done more in 6 years in MMA than 99% of those fighting all their life will do in their whole career.

Up until 3 months ago he was 4-0 in the UFC and only Neil Magny had been on a longer winning streak in the entire division. He retires 22-4-1 overall in MMA and a former Cage Contender and Cage Warriors champion.

I know people take the piss out of him etc, but what he has done in such a short period of time in the sport is actually remarkable and when you take everything into consideration his career is always going to be vastly underrated among fans.

The very best of luck to him in the future and with his new venture.

That's way the way the piss was taken out of him bugged the shit out of me. He's wasn't UFC top 10 material, so what!! Neither are the 99% of MMA fighters. It easy to criticize a fighter sitting on your ass streaming a UFC event, stuffing cheetos in face. It's a lot harder to give it a go. Go to he gym, spar with somebody, be humbled, then rethink your comments.
And I'm not saying that only fighters can critize fighters either, I'm just pointing out that people don't look as bad-ass throwing punches as they like to imagine.

On his fighting style,I dont think he actually performed as good as I think he could've,He tried to be a striker I remember him throwing a spinning hook kick or capoeira thing in sweden,Hes a big strong guy with good grappling I think he could've done a pat cummins and wrestle fcuk people for dominant wins.

Could be wrong but pretty sure he joined SBG as a blue belt in BJJ that he had got training in the states, or so i was told anyway.

Either way, Best of luck to Cathal in future endeavours, A very humble and good guy.
