lads just back to the grants again, could someone put in a sraper now and claim the grant in 6 months time or whenever the nxt timeframe is if the reciepts were backdated or is there any way around it?
    No.

If you get approved for a grant, you can only start to install then. They spotcheck some applicants to make sure they aren't applying for work already done. Also, your supplier might have trouble supplying invoices next year for work done this year, assuming that you would be approved in the next tranch of applicants. Your application might go to 2 years from now before approval.

It's a very dangerous road to travel.

2nd abortion this morning. Alongside a very sick cow from the other day, enough to set alarm bells ringing, Brought the fetuses to ucd, and vaccinating all the cows for salmonella tonight.

I have a bit of problem lads.
It's a good one to have though.
I gave 12 autumn born heifers born last sept/Oct.
I wasn't going to breed these until May because I don't want any more autumn calvers but need more spring calvers.
But there massive. Easily 350 kgs. One girl not far off 400. And I wouldn't class out herd as big. Av cow 550 kgs.
Secondly I've no where to put my spring born heifers - 25 of them.
Brought them to out farm today thinking there would be loads of room in shed there but it will be way too cramped with 37 heifers in one side so I let them into a paddock for tonight till we think of something.

    Any ideas?
We have a big 35ft by 60ft hay shed here but it's full up with straw

I only wanted to put 10 heifers to bull last week, neighbour was helping us sort them and he picked 20 that he said were fit, I got him down to 16:rolleyes: my thinking is hopefully they wont all go in calf in the 6 weeks I am allowing

Can you move some of the straw home to replace what's been used already and fire them in there?

Well that straw shed in my post is at home here.
But there is a straw shed there.
It's about 25ff x 45ft. Roughly 150 bales in that and we'll over 400 in one at home.
I possibly should have sown kale in out farm and reseeded some of it if I was thinking right

    Ah, got you now.

I thought there might be enough room if bales were shifted.

Need the stock first. Housing will look after itself once the stock is there and earning.

we sit down each year and work out were everything goes, no use realising on day of housing you dont have enough room. ye all must have fantastic county council inspectors that let ye wait until last minute to worry about housing

Don't know how many cows you have, but would they be much of a load in the dry cow house. They don't need to be gaining weight over the winter and a couple of months with dry cows and out to grass 3 or 4 weeks before bulling. Reckon you'll hardly notice them in a house of 70 cows plus....unless you're overstocked there too..

Fully agree ,no point having loads of stock and no where to put them, more stock = more housing = more slurry storage .plans need to be in place to cater for expansion .a co co or cross compliance inspection which will pick up these things can and will have a big effect .as Sr. Increases and u enter derogation to comply with nitrates ur only a phone call away from an inspection most years

On dry farms youngstock barely need any housing, my aim moving forward would be only to house them during exceptional bad weather, hopefully no more than say 10days over the winter. I'm looking at alternative uses for the weanling shed moving forward, will probably use it for dry cows instead. With block spring calving you got the calving pen free for other stock until Feb also.

why are there different rules for different counties? Have loads of sheds idle here at the minute that are used for calves etc

Well it's better than the problem we had 3 yrs ago of not being able to keep up with bills.
    It's a one yr problem.
We know what we can and can't afford and we need more cows before we can spend any more

Not having a go gg ,but over the last 2/3 years you've outlined how u plan to expand nos ,you've managed to get the stock but u seem goosed for shed/cubicle space ,slurry storage and a parlour .u now seem to be at a stage where u will need them all in the one go and sooner rather than later .dont know your situation re nitrates and how near dero u are but at high stock nos it's just a matter of time before your inspected .bps penalties and co co inspectors sniffing around every year ain't what u want .your young ambitious and have a good handle on your costs don't be afraid of debt and back yourself
