this is the type of news that everybody has been fearing since our squad was finalised.

we have what, 13 or 14 fit senior outfield players at the moment plus the young lads?

Manager Louis van Gaal tells the media the 19-year-old will not play 90 minutes because of a "lack of match rhythm".

This is exactly thetype of game that will show what depay is he will have chance to step up and make his mark, martial is the biggest loss out of that bunch we have no one else that can play as a striker like he plays.

Wonder if Depay starts as striker or if it will be Wilson.
    Lingard and Mata.
    Herrera.

almost 3 years ago to the day

Ah we can all pull out those posts ;) A couple of examples

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=70589948&postcount=19945

    2011
Smalling still has mistakes to make but I like the look of him, think he could be part of the team for years to come

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=84408692&postcount=6882

    2013
Smalling already is a brilliant centre back, and will be one of the best, a ready made replacement for Rio and is going to be so important to the team for the next 10 years.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=84408974&postcount=6885
I think it will eventually be Evans to move out of the way for Jones, for me Smalling is nailed on for that first team for a long time to come.

If Fergie keeps moving jones about he may never become the cb he might do though

I'm just saying if the situation arose, not every day you get offered 20m for a player and come summer I feel he will be surplus to requirements anyway as we splurge another 100-150m on players.

So what if we are offered £20m? I am as fiscally conservative as anybody on here but that isn't a figure that is going to change our financial situation in any meaningful fashion, and certainly not after we have to spend a similar amount to replace him with another squad player anyway.

It would make no sense to accept £20m for Felliani just because its £20m. If Van Gaal doesn't want him thats one thing (and considering he has never held a first team spot under Van Gaal that wouldn't surprise me), but he is a useful squad option so unless we desperately need the cash it seems better to just keep him. We have gotten rid of enough players at this stage.

This is the type of news that every club fears, be thankful it's Watford this weekend and we should still have enough to get a result.

I think this will be the team with wilson up front then depay to come on later as LVG used that famous match rhythm line on wilson.

That team is lacking in Perreira..... ;)

Subs bench could make funny reading
    Borthwick Jonhnson!!!
    Fosu Mensah
    Tanzenube
    Perrieria
    Depay
    Fletcher...

Wasn't one of you guys saying Callum Gribben is a prospect

Would Guillermo Varela get a shout or has he been loaned out/ sold too....

number 1. because he is not worth £20m

number 2. because he is only a squad player

number 3. because you should always be looking to improve the first 11/bench

number 4. the board will always be looking at figures even if the fans don't

also I wouldn't sell him unless there was a player coming in, but if it was a straight swap Fellaini for Mane I would take it as would most

But Mane would be someone for the right wing position.. he's not even comparable to Fellaini. Mane wouldn't be bought to have a different approach to the game from the bench. It's about having something different when plan A isn't working.

but we need pace on the wing, Mata could move infield then, Rooney could then be dropped/rested. Its about improving your first 11, Mane would do that

1: So what if he isn't worth £20m, we don't particularly need the £20m. James Wilson isn't worth £10m, would you take it if offered right now?

    2. We need squad players. They are there for a reason.

    3. Once again, who says we can't do both? Keep the squad players AND improve the team.

You haven't answered my point at all, why bother with a straight swap, why not try to have both? The figures aren't earth shattering so can we not afford it? Will they combust if stored in the same room?

He is worth 20 million. Who says he isn't. He is worth what someone will buy him for.
Saying he isn't worth x is arbritary.

A good squad player. Nothing wrong with him there at all. We have a very young squad and a 27/28 year is good. Life experiences are tougher when you are young.
But that's a silly point I made, just like saying well he is a squad player.
Ya let's throw in some 19 year old who can barely grow a beard.

Ya but who are we upgrading Fellaini with? Mane? He dosent play the same position as Fellaini so it's another exercise in futility.
Not to mention it's a cliche, it's a team sport.

You make it sound like the board are some cut throat evil corporation when we all know they aren't.
Utd have never been a club that sells when people offer 20 million for a player. They would spend more replacing that player
Players will be let go or sold when the manager dosent need them or the player wants to go and we have seen time after time utd don't Particulary care about how much they get for players.

It's fans who care more about fees because it gives them something to judge a player on just like you did with Fellaini by saying he isn't worth 20 million rather than actually looking at the team as a whole.

You let your hatred of him cloud your views. The only reason I can't think of that is that becuase he is tall and has an Afro and that is different to what you are used to seeing so you mock it.

Quite funny everyone talking about getting rid of Fellaini when all it takes is an injury to Schweinsteiger tomorrow for that position to be up shít creek.

    Exactly.

If he was a foot smaller and didn't have that glorious fro, would there be that much?

Not really everyone talking about getting rid of Fellaini, more one person with an agenda against him driving the debate. It's getting old and annoying at this point

Gowl I understand your point and I admit I might be biased here but he's rarely used in midfield so saying we'd need to buy a midfielder to replace him is a bit odd..
and that's why I'm frustrated with Fellaini.. where should he be playing.. is he a 6 a 9 or ????
LVg is to blame for the usage of him in certain positions but I wish he'd just say i'm a 6 please play me there...

I think most people are foolishly disregarding the amount of sweeties you could get for £20M.

You were heralding Phil Neville and John O Shea(who has actually played every position on the pitch except left wing :pac: ) a little while ago. They are the ultimate utility players.. maybe look at Fellaini like that, a player that can fill in numerous positions. He is incredibly useful squad player.

But the one position he isn't filling in is the position we all thought we were spending £27m on, central midfield. I think he still has the attributes to play there but he is here a few years now and has never come close to making an impact in that role.

Battering ram Felliani is useful from time to time, but like brinty I find it frustrating that we don't see the all action Felliani around the middle of the park.
