This looks like a useful tool for anyone de-lidding their CPU, no razor blades or vice needed. Then again where the fun in that :pac:

HWVS, assuming no issues, really are on point when they deliver (no pun intended). I ordered a PSU, SSD, case, motherboard and a stick of RAM last Monday. Some items had to be delivered to them first. no problem. I already received the SSD, and will be receiving 3 more packages (2 of which are already en route!). They are still waiting on the PSU delivered to them so they can deliver it to me.

Seems inefficient, but I'm not complaining. I wouldn't have minded if they had held them back for 2 (or even 1) delivery(ies). Not bad for 13 euro delivery charge!

I have some cash this christmas and all other presents are accounted for, so I wanted to spend some money (about 400 eur) on upgrading the pc my brothers use. Currently it has an AMD Phenom II X2 550, which is seriously bottlenecking the PC (They have my HD6950s in crossfire). Should I be looking at maybe a second hand 2500k and motherboard or something else?

LGA1155 boards are pretty expensive, an i5 4460 and board wouldn't be much over €200

Where's a good place to look for second hand computer parts? Adverts is pretty shite.

Ebay maybe? Adverts is the best round here I would think

I think Adverts is good if you know what you're doing. Haven't been burned yet. The worst I've had to deal with is a silly buyer who wasted my time and bailed on me.

Adverts is a buyers market. If your a seller you have to put up with ridiculous offers or the good auld swaps

I haven't had a problem with mine. How long did you have the board before the key became unresponsive and did the key totally die?

I've had this one 3 months and the previous 2 i sent back where approx 3 months also.
The faulty keys either work right or double press/non responsive.

So now you can finally enjoy desktop graphics on a laptop.... ;)

    A more "elegant" solution here:

So we are talking about unplugging a wireless adaptor to plug in a graphics card to a laptop with an extra power cable and which is hooked up to a monitor.

    Em......

Wow. such graphics. very framerate. so fast. :pac:

Asus had a version of this out a while back, died a death though. The fact that you can get a 970m on lower end gaming laptops (still stupid money) and you can now get a GTX 980 on higher end gaming laptops, external GPU solutions most likely won't gain much traction.

Nice. Once you go wall/arm mounted going back just feels wrong :(

That looks really nice, but so does the price :( (Well, for a student anyways..)

Looking for something like that myself, have 2 odd monitors now and wanted to pick up a matching monitor to go alongside my LG IPS 22EA53 but theyve been discontinued which throws a spanner into the works, love this monitor.

A laptop with a GTX980 is not a portable laptop. The point of external GPU's means you can have desktop-like performance/limitations with netbook portability/limitations.

I am very tempted by this. I could do with more desktop space. What's the clearance like when you rotate the monitor (also, what are your monitor dimensions)?

World of difference between those laptops and something more ultrabook styled.

While exaggerated here is a clear example.

I purchased a HDD last week from Computeruniverse.net. I then got my confirmation email/receipt which mentioned it would be shipped via DHL.

It also mentioned in stock and ready to ship followed by immediate dispatched.

So seven days later I'm still waiting. I also never received a tracking number for DHL, which I found a bit odd.

So if anybody has dealt with them before and can provide some insight into how they normally operate, I'd really appreciate it.

IMO a decent onboard GPU (plenty of gaming laptops <2/3Kg with GTX 960M/970's about) is still a lot more convenient than an external dock setup. Cost of the adapter, GPU & PSU (unless you have same already) could easily hit the 300-400 mark; if it was me I would put same twoards a better laptop. If you had the parts floating about, it would be definatley worth a try.

From what I can see, only two ways to connect a decent GPU to a laptop would be an ExpressCard slot/ spare mini PCI-E which all seems very reliant on the laptop's hardware/firmware for same.

I can vouch for Ergotron. They're expensive, but they're also pretty much the industry standard. I'm using the LX version of the arm. Slightly different in that it mounts to a pole which gives you a lot more height options.

I've used three different models. Their first LX, their side by side LX, and their newer LX. All of them are absolutely solid. They're expensive, but each piece has the feel of something you could easily use to bash in the heads of a swarm of zombies and it wouldn't have the slightest blemish.
