I did a search in the end :P

I thought maybe they had deleted it cos it was over - waaahhhhhh.

Oh yeh, the reason I was actually looking for it was to see if anyone can recommend a good 10k plan for me? I want to really work on my 5k/10k times over the next while so one that will make me fast. Thanks :D

OK total freak out there - I thought the thread was gone!

It's been moved to training logs, if anyone else is looking for it in panic!!!!!

Heh! I thought the same! Went digging into my post history :)

Does anybody else feel that after having now done a marathon, they would have no interest in going abroad to do one? Imagine going all the way to New York, Paris, etc and then having to restfor first day(to conserve energy, etc), running the marathon and then being so sore and having to fly home???

It isn't as bad as you think unless you're flying home the evening of the race. A bit of walking around the day after is good for recovery. The main thing you need to be careful with is pre-race food - that said, before Barcelona I had a Catalan seedy pastry and a black coffee for breakfast and it was fine. UK races are probably easier in that respect.

How is everyone doing? Real life is a little bit hectic for me at the moment so i haven't been posting.

DG thanks so much for doing this. Am desperately trying to get the yearly accounts finished (running a marathon would be easier!) and a self-imposed ban (almost) from boards.ie+social media is necessary at the moment. Can't wait to read the reports, have so much to catch up on but will be late in with my homework again!

Yes, agreed. Thanks DG for piling all those into one post. Was able to double check I read them all.

Too many to comment individually but well done to each and every one of you. Was very emotional reading them all to be honest. Was wishing and hoping for the best for you all. I forgot to mention in my report, once I found my people at the end, I walked back along to see if I could spot any of you. I say ye were all well gone though by the time I was headed home for my shower. Still have the damned cold - can't shake it off!

TFGR - huge congratulations to you. What an unbelievable story and journey. I'm dying to know your plans now?
I know you said at the Half that you want to concentrate on your 5 and 10k times. I'm going to do the same.

My PB for 10k is 49 minutes. I'd love to one day run a 45min 10k! One can dream.... hard haha!

whoops - oh my god - I was winching reading your report. I have no idea how you or ANYONE can run for that long in such pain. I'm guessing the painkiller made you ill. I was very nauseous myself so can't imagine how I'd have felt with a harsh painkiller on my dodgy tummy! Well done whoops.

duffer - great report. Our running journey really seems to mirror each other! What are your plans now?

I had already signed up to the run in the dark 10k on November 11th before I even knew i'd be doing the marathon *hides*

Went back running properly yesterday. It's a chore :pac: Motivation is bad right now:eek:

OK finally getting to this now that I've had time to think about it.

What went well with your training plan?

Anything with intervals/tempo runs/speedwork. Loved them and always nailed them. I would have happily done them every day.

What would you do differently with your training? (frash's example of a longer midweek run is an excellent one)

    So many things.

Training in the mornings was what I always planned to do but I ended up working the 7am shift and it didn't happen. By the time I got out in the evening I was knackered, then by the time I got home from my evening runs I was wired and was awake late and so was wrecked getting up again! I would manage the times of my runs much better. Get them done as early as possible - including my long runs.

I didn't look at a week's plans until that week. This I think was a big mistake.

I would take on a different plan to be completely honest, I'm not happy with the plan I had, it didn't really match up with the advice I was getting with regards to long run:midweek runs ratios. I also feel that I didn't hit enough mileage overall.

I would have a hell of a lot more respect for the distance, and while I missed out on some runs due to injury I know there were a couple I missed that I could have done. I will never make that mistake again.

    I will do more crosstraining.

I will do more core and strength work - once I was told I should stop crossfit until the marathon was over - I stopped finding the time for strength work. This was a big mistake. I could have easily done pilates at home, or gone to my local gym for weight sessions. And I LOVE lifting weights so I don't really know why I didn't do this as much as I should have - I've no excuse really - tiredness I guess, but that comes back to time management which is entirely my responsibility.

I will lose weight. I don't quite know how I will achieve this yet, as I don't know what I can improve in my diet, but now that I am not putting in as many hours of training for the marathon I will make this a priority.

I will not blindly accept what I'm told. I was pretty embarrassed at the expo, when speaking to one of the pacers as I was trying to decided who to go out with. We were discussing my training and my easy pace, I explained I run by HR. When asked was my easy 70% of my max - I realised I didn't know. I should have known, I should have known exactly why I was running the way I was running. I will make it my business now to know why I am training the way I am training and what impact it has on my progress.

I will make a better plan for race day. I had no plan for injury. I spent two miles wondering WTF I was meant to do now. I hadn't considered it. I will next time.

Lots more things - but I won't bore you :)

What went well about the race?

The first 12 miles went pretty well.
I was very comfortable, I kept myself in check, I ensured my breathing was good and that I wasn't feeling pressure.

Coming up to mile 13 when I was starting to feel dizzy and not entirely sure if I'd hit the ground, I made the decision to take a break and fuel up. Despite the way it ended, I think this was the right decision at the time.

When it all went to sh*t, I panicked for the first couple of miles and became quite distressed. Once I got to mile 17 though, I was able to break it down into pieces. I didn't think about the 9 miles left. I thought about the small 5ks I had to do. That made things so much easier. I reminded myself of all the things I had said, about soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying the day. In the end, it was PMA that got me over the line smiling. So ultimately - breaking it down and staying positive were the things that were good.

What would you do differently if you could start the race again?

On the day? Very little that I could have done differently on the day in all honesty - once I crossed the start line that is.
Leading up to it? All of the above in my training plan question.

Hold tight, Graduate thread mentor coming up ;) Have a look st Alf's recommendations to give you an idea of what's involved in 5k and 10k training. Given your grá for interval work, this'll be right up your street. (See what I did there :D )
Your graduate mentor will be able to give you guys a more personalised plan, I am sure there are quite a few of you with 5 and 10ks in your sights.

This thread won't be deleted but I have a few wind down posts to do yet. Must admit, I had a mild panic myself when I couldn't see it on the main page this morning. Now I'm just feeling mild indignation that we've been downgraded as it were :pac:

I know we get a graduates thread and all, but this Novice thread has been such a big part of my year...to think of it winding down...well...

Best of think of it as an actual upgrade prior to this - this thread in previous years was always in the Training logs, 'stickied' for the duration of the training & cut loose at that stage. Just as well it wasn't moved last week - would have caused melt down in the midst of taper madness

I can feel the antsiness to get going again coming back into many of you. By all means start running but only easy running in November with perhaps a touch of slightly faster (but not hard) running towards the very end of the month.

It's not just us recreational runners that need to rest after a marathon. Ryan Hall is one of the best American marathon runners ever. He ran London in 2:06:17 in 2008 and Boston in 2:04:58 in 2011. Highly motivated by Boston and with the London olympics in his sights he got stuck into training with just a weeks break after the marathon. He qualified via the olympic trials where he finished second in 2:09:30 but failed to finish the Olympic marathon due to injury. Since then he has managed to finish just one marathon in a time of 2:17:50.

It's a little simplistic to put all of his injury woes down to that decision to only take a weeks break after Boston but it has been a big factor which he has acknowledged himself.

If an elite professional runner with access to great physios, massage and all kinds of physiological testing needs more than one week to recover properly then chances are that we do too.

Lizzie Lee took two weeks completely off running after Berlin, and another week before she started doing any hard running

on the other hand, Freddie Sittuk ran 2:15 in the marathon and came second in the Dublin Senior XC on Sunday, so...

Hey Pink, always good to hear from you! If it's a chore, don't force it. Sounds like you need to recharge mentally too. You can spend the month of November in a number of ways: complete rest, very easy jogging and an in between of rest and easy jogging. All of these ways will benefit you as you recover.

If I was you, I'd wait until I got 'the itch' to run again. However, if the itch hasn't returned by December, I might need to start applying a bit of sergeant major shouting gentle pressure otherwise you start to lose more than you have gained.

Fwiw, I'd dump the Run In The Dark and suck up the loss of the registration fee....

Thanks Clearlier... that answers the question I was going to ask about how soon I could try for a PB at a local 5k Parkrun. Right so, I'll put it off till early December...

I dunno what I'll do without this thread! It's like having my very own running "comfort blanket". Those of you with young kids will know what I mean.

I'm out for a very easy, short jog tonight, in fact it'll be more like a power walk around the block than a jog. But I am so glad because I am going stir crazy! I NEED to move!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,199 ✭✭✭denis b

I ran a second easy 5km run yesterday and felt really tired later in the day. I am going to take a couple of days off as I have come to realise that I have not recovered sufficiently. Oh these old bones of mine......they need a rest, for now.

First run out this evening. Only did 4 miles at around my MP. Slight pains in the calf and knee and was a bit sluggish overall but really enjoyed being back out there. I missed it :o
