IOS DOWNLOAD CANT FIND MY PIC

Hi, I downloaded an Ios on my iphone earlier, I went into Itunes & used the back up button. then when i uploaded this ios I cannot access most of my photos, I didnt import them as I think I should have but there was no instruction on itunes for this. Can anyone help or have i just lost a lot of super photos of my kids! HELP
