Back to the Future Day on Wednesday - Today

So this Wednesday, 21st October, is the day Marty McFly came to the future.

It's very hard to believe we don't yet have hoverboards or flying cars.

I was only a toddler back in 1985, but who remembers the movie being released, and how does 2015 live up to your expectations compared to that predicted in Back to the Future II?

Will you do anything on Wednesday to mark Marty's arrival?

My local cinema are doing a Back to the Future Double Bill (1 & 2), and I'm hoping to go to it.
I hear some places are showing the trilogy, but I doubt I'd be able to sit watching three movies in a row.

Here's some things that are actually better in 2015 than they were in Back to the Future Part II

A few examples:

Video calls

In Back to the Future Part II (BTTF), Marty gets fired by his boss over a video call that looks a lot like Skype or FaceTime. Obviously, we've mastered this form of video communication by now - but we've also managed to take it one step further by developing real-time translation software that lets people hold live video conversations in different languages.

Fingerprint scanners

In the movie, Biff pays for a cab simply by scanning his fingerprint. And while we're not quite up to that stage as yet, people with Apple Pay can pay for something simply by tapping their fingerprint-activated iPhones. Sweden is even moving towards getting rid of cash altogether. We also now use fingerprint scanning at airports and for security purposes, and scientists have even worked out how to detect what we've recently eaten from monitoring our fingerprints.

TV Screens

The screens in BTTF were pretty ambitious at the time, but they got it right in terms of the flat and large screens we have everywhere these days. But what they didn't predict was the fact that we'd have totally foldable and flat screens on the horizon. We feel like Marty McFly would have really appreciated being able to roll his TV up and take it with him.

And, sure, there is that awesome 3D hologram Jaws 19 ad in BTTF, but we don't think the film really captured just how pervasive 3D technology would be on TVs in the home, not to mention in the cinema. We can watch Mr Robot on 3D from the comfort of our own homes these days, guys, life is good.

I recently found my old DVD boxset of all of them, so I might watch it on the 21st and see how nostalgic I become.
The second one is the best in my opinion lots of time traveling shenanigans.

Yeh I definitely think the second is most memorable, it's the one that sticks out for me.

I can barely remember the third, so honestly not sure if I've ever seen it.

It's the one that takes place in the wild west.

Just all the different time zones in the second one and having to hide from other versions of themselves was well done for the time and fun to watch.

Yeah my friends told me the same the other night about wild west.

Might check it out after wednesday when I've seen the other two. I'd be surprised if I'd not seen it at least once though, even as something on background on tv.

It is enjoyable, you should give it a look at least once before giving up on it.

On the brightside hover boards are a thing now. They developed them a few months back kind of basic but still cool.

I remember being brought to the Irish premier of Back to the Future 2 back in the day, and it was awesome.

We got a little digital clock (which I thought was the bees knees), and a theorist I think,

Despite the clothes, and the hover boards & flying cars, we're not a million miles off the movies vision of the now.

Now for some Pizza, hydrate level 4 please!!

Bought a box set of the 3 DVDs a few months ago cos I'd never seen them before. I watched the first one and thought it was great. Must catch up with the next two now for the anniversary.

Oops, actually, Back to the Future was 1985. Back to the Future II was in 1989.

I was still slightly too young for the cinema though.

These are my all time favourite movies. Absolutely love them. Although 2 is probably my least favourite. Unfortunately I don't have time to watch them this week, but I saw the original on the big screen again about a year ago. I'm hoping to introduce the eldest to them shortly.

Pepsi are releasing a limited edition - (10,000 count) of Pepsi Perfect at $20.15 on the day with proceeds to Fox's Parkinson Charity. It's expected to sell out within hours & is only available in the US. I'm gonna try to get one shipped to a mate of mine.

Was lucky enough to see both in the cinema when they first were released. There was a queue outside the cinema and I can remember people sitting on the steps to watch the film as there were no seats left to sit on. Saturdays used to be mental for films back then. Abbey St and O'Connell always had queues for films on the street and they would have special poles with different screen numbers which they would place on the street so people would know where to queue.

The Trilogy in Cineworld and a few IMCs and BTTF II & III double feature is on in a few places also.

It clearly is too long since I've seen these movies. I had to google Pepsi Perfect to see what it was.

So, from Wednesday we will have travelled further forward in time than Marty went back in time in the first one and went forward in the second one. That's a bit of a balls isn't it?
