IKEA Dimming lights lower your electric bill because dimming the lights saves energy!

    So dimming my lights saves energy.... how much? Is this true? ikea says so :confused:

    Yes. Depends on how much you dim them; roughly linear after power factor and the electronics' self-consumption.

    While it's true that dimming a light will save energy, it does so at a loss of efficiency.

    E.g a 60W lamp dimmed to 50% so it only consumes 30W will give out less light than a 30W lamp on full power.

    Most energy efficient lamps such as LED and CFLs either are totally unable to be dimmed or only work with certain dimmers, though there are some dimmable LEDs available now.


    You should only really use dimmers when you need to vary the light levels otherwise it's more efficient to use a lamp that gives the required illumination.
