Betty S and Orishfruitie, are you still on? Let us know so we'll wait for you.

    Pace: 9:45-10:00 min/mi [6:03-6-12 min/km].

Route: effectively the DCM route, without the bit in the Phoenix Park / Castleknock: Towards the islandbridge, southbound to the SCR ... ah drat, I don't really know. Denis_b will be the navigator.

Attached is a map. We'll end back in town, and then run back to the PP over the first few miles of the course. 20M in total.

There'll be in-flight entertainment about an hour in, courtesy of duffer247, many thanks in advance!

Bushy park would be perfect, will you be heading in Terenure direction?

Yes, how about the corner of Templeogue and Fortfield Roads? We'll be heading towards Terenure. This'll be about 11km [7M] in, so we should be there about 10:40am (+/- 5min). Firedance might want to practice her support table for the day itself? Just sayin' (and I like strawberries).

FeenaM has volunteered for flapjack-duty (this is an incentive for us to keep up with her!).

Anything/anyone else - novices? Sure even the mentors might want a stretch of the auld legs?

Its strange but the HM has definitely left me feeling stronger and much more positive. I had the experience of running a much longer race and the run went to plan. I pushed it but have found that I have to be careful this week as I have been inclined to run my easy runs much faster than normal. Its like I found my racing legs after weeks of slow running and that my instinct is to keep running at a faster pace. The LSR will put a stop to my gallop, no doubt.

Appreciate that there are a million other reasons why people may feel differently.

Really looking forward to the remaining LSR runs to bank some very useful percentage gains for the big day.

10/10 for persistence nop :D of course I'd be out with a table but it seems you're covered between the pit stop at Terenure and Feenas flap jacks :p

have a great run folks :)

I might be in a bit of bother. Niggle in calf has turned to pain. Physio again tomorrow. Slightly panicked but hopefully will be all good. Fingers crossed. It's too close now to be giving up without a fight.

Hopefully its nothing whoops. I know the feeling, it would be really disappointing to give up now after all the hard work.

Hi FeenaM, apologies for the delay. I agree with Clearlier and I like his theory re slow twitch and fast twitchers. Fwiw, this is the longest I have ever taken to recover from a race (bar the marathon and I definitely emptied the tank on Sunday ) and I strongly suspect I have more fast twitch fibres, probably a mixed bunch at the moment so feel free to slot that into your theory :)

    My digression over....

My take on it is that a marathon training plan requires a singular focus unlike other plans and too many races remove that singular focus.
A half marathon race is not a necessary part of the plan but many athletes race one for different reasons.

For a novice runner, racing (or running) a half
    - gives you a dress rehearsal in a race setting (clothes, fuelling, hydration etc), unlike your other long runs
    - allows you to assess your pace judgement and ability to keep to an even pace
    - as a PMP, like you mention, allows you to test out your PMP but we have been doing that in the boards plan
    - gives you an idea how training has gone and allows you to reassess your marathon target, providing you resist the temptation to hang your hat on 'best possible outcome'
    - gives you respect for the distance you are about to tackle. You are going to run two of these babies. In a row.
    - tapering and recovering at this stage is not such an interrupt. The physiological benefits you gain from racing a half will 95% of the time outweigh the drawbacks. If, however, you have included a lot of tune up and build up races, and have been tapering for these, then yes, tapering and recovering again is not ideal. I suppose now y'all see what we been banging on about?! Also bear in mind that your recovery will be affected as your body has been ill. Don't forget to factor in the draining aspect of antibiotics. I know they leave my legs dead
    - the timing of this - five weeks out - is ok, optimal window is 5-8 weeks but Hal Higdon (ambivalent about their necessity) slots one in at nine weeks out.

Hope this helps and if anything else comes to me I'll get back to you :) I would imagine that next year, as an intermediate, you'll be definitely including a half at PMP but I am dying to see how you get on at the shorter stuff too :)

Do you know, I think we are all suffering a bit with 'maranoia' as was posted earlier... :D

I'd probably be feeling pretty drained this week even if i hadn't raced the HM, as would we all, with coughs/colds and niggles, etc.

In a way it is reassuring to hear that you don't just bounce back the next day either after racing a HM (I mean that in the nicest way) and so it doesn't mean that my body wasn't able for the HM at this stage of training. I guess, I'm just used to doing 5k/10k races and then hopping out of the bed the next morning feeling perfect!!!

Really looking forward to seeing how I am when I return to the shorter stuff too :pac: I'm on a mission to fill that table

My daughter and I will at the wall along Bushy park opposite the entrance to Terenure College, I'll be wearing a grey hoody (just in case) although my daughter thinks I should dress up as Jemima Puddleduck! Apart from water - any requests?

Some very good news on my part
After a scary spasm in the back of my left leg at the end on Saturday's HM, I was still limping and wearing trainers to work on Monday, that I figured I was best throwing in the towel as a hamstring injury this close would rule me out. I was finding difficult to just log in to the forum.
I was surprised to find myself walking fine Tuesday and the Physio that evening confirmed it was a sciatic nerve issue, and felt I could ease back in to running. Thanks to Dg too for the guidance on how to effect this easing in period.
Last night I comfortably ran 3 miles, no niggles, no tweaks. Feel really positive now. I've a lot of work to do now outside of running to prevent a re-occurrence, something I've neglected to date. Lesson learned.
To anyone here in our group that is in this limbo land of picking up niggles, getting assessed, missing training and feeling like they're falling behind - I know what its like and you're not alone. It may be one of the most challenging aspects, psychologically at least, of this journey.

+1 on this Duffer. Thats really good news. Great to have sought timely advice and acted on it. Have also had super physio input as well and won't ever suffer on in silence again.

    Will catch you on Saturday.

Even phantom niggles are freaking me out right now. Every little bit of stiffness, every tiny pain and I'm worried that at this stage of the game that it'll develop into something bigger that I mightn't have time left to recover and that it might scupper the whole thing.

Just need to make it through the choppy waters of the next two weeks and into the relatively safe harbour of the taper.

Stress on the bone, blah blah blah. No running for three days. Long run Monday. Have to stop immediately if there's any soreness. Big red flag yadda yadda yadda.

    Ohmigod is so stoopid

Thank you duffer247! Water will do fine - I think we'll be 5 or 6. Maybe something like a packet of winegums - but only if that's not too much trouble.

FWIW I also vote for Jemima Puddleduck.
