Just a quick question, i work from say 8 am to 430pm with 1 hour lunch, we are required to come in a half early so that means am in the work place for 8 and half hours which includes 1 hour lunch??? That seem correct

You do not get paid for your lunch hour, so seven and a half hours. Some companies require employees to be at their stations when work commences so they request that you arrive before that a prepare to begin your working day at 8am, not walk through the door at 8am.

yep i know i dont get paid for my lunch hour which is grand but with any other company it was always 9-5 or 12-8 including breaks etc just wondering why i have to start a half hour before work

Cos those are the hours the company have put down for you to work?

What breaks are you talking about. 9 - 5:30 with an hour off at lunch is normal. You seem to be implying a 35 hr work week is the norm?

I think OP thinks everyone works 9-5 and is now wondering why they are working their new hours.

9-5 to me is a very generic term, to indicate someone who works office hours which can be anything from 8-6 in a lot of organistions, with some people starting at 8 and finishing at 4/4:30 and then starting later and finishing later.

He seems to think that starting before 9 is unusual

Or it could be that he is working 8:30 - 4 with a one hour lunch, which is a 37.5 hour week, but is being asked to be in by eight, but that's unclear.

What am saying is a normal working shift is 8-4 or 9-5 or 12-8 in any job I've worked before , usually two 15 min breaks and a half hour for lunch . Where am working now it's 8-430 or 9-530 or 1130-8pm with 1 hour lunch . So what am asking isn't if I have to come in early to be at the desk before work starts etc etc , it's how do they add a half an hour onto the shift ?

A normal working week legally is up to a total of 48 hours, so over a five day week that's 9.6 hours so including unpaid breaks that could be 10.6 hours, so rounding that down to 10.5 hours, that could be 9am - 7:30. 8am - 6:30

Most places do an eight or nine hour day including lunch.

All your employer is doing is having an 8.5 hour day including lunch which is a 7.5 hours working day, this is perfectly normal

Just because it's different from other jobs doesn't mean it's wrong/illegal.
Working from 8-4:30 with an hour for lunch is perfectly normal and legal, nothing wrong here.

It's just different from your expection.

One job I had, my hours were 8am - 5:30 pm with an hour for lunch, so 42.5 hours a week, which is also fine.

The only way it can be wrong is if

1) Your total paid hours per week, on average, is more than 48, or
2) Your before-tax pay divided by total paid hours is less than the minimum wage for your age-X-work-experince-since-18.

There is no minimum or maximum work hours per day: in some industries, a 12-hour shift is routine. In others, 4 hours is the basic shift length.

Is the company allowed ask that their staff be at work 30 minutes early and not pay them for those 30 minutes?

I work 8:30 - 5:30 with an hour for lunch! so thats an 8 hour day with an hour for lunch. So in total 9 hours of my day are gone! + the 2 hours it takes to get in + out of town so thats 11 hours really. so 55 hours a week with a 45 hour working week.

My boss is changing our work hours on a Saturday. Which will be an extra half hour. Does anybody know if that is legal or do they have to give us a new contract to sign because they are changing our working terms!
