    How intimidating is this Heartbreak Hill? Live up to its frightening name?
    Here's the race profile, so I'm guessing that 'Heartbreak Hill' is that one just past the 20 mile marker.

    Heartbreak Hill - on its own - is not that bad at all. It all depends what state you arrive at it in. The support and general carnival at this point will get you up it anyway :)
    This year's course is different, anyone know what stage it's at this year?

    As you said gels are really down to personal choice and what suits each individual. From my limited knowledge of them they probably fall into 2 main categories which are the lighter higher volume ones like High 5, Isogel, Kinetica, etc. and the smaller volume heavier gluppy one like Power Gel, Gu, etc. The lighter one are generally easier on the stomach and can be taken with little or no water. The heavier ones need to be taken with water and can be harder to digest. I am sure there are plenty of discussion on this on the main forum but on the phone so can't link any.

    "Heartbreak Hill" is around mile 22 on this year's route map. Wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. When you get there just focus on baby steps one at a time and it will behind you before you know it.

    Sometimes I get Friday's off so did my 16 mile lsr today. Averaged 9:33 per mile, happy enough with that, find it a bit hard to pace myself at times.
    Took a gel at 11 miles but found it upset my stomach, am going to have to either go without gels or try at least one more brand, are there any that are v easy on stomach?
    Found the run grand, had plenty left in the tank afterwards. Great to have it done with two days off work still ahead.
    Am living in Clare and won't get to check out DCM course until the day before. How intimidating is this Heartbreak Hill? Live up to its frightening name?


    Just to repeat myself, it's pretty normal not to be able to stomach a gel later in your run because your heart is working full time sending blood to your muscles and doesn't want to send any to the stomach.
    Keep looking for a solution for a gel you like, but also consider taking a gel earlier in your run when you can stomach it better.

    If you find you don't like taking gels at all; it doesn't have to be a huge issue. Lot's of people take on other fuel sources and many will happily race a marathon with no food at all.

    Re consuming gels, how much and when, I found the two-part post above explained things really well for a novice, and also gives a good formula for "how much?". As meno et al have said, topping up the tank while the stomach is still open for business seems to be a key factor in avoiding gi distress.

    Heartbreak Hill is a short, steep-ish hill (not very steep but visibly a hill)... it's not that bad, as Dubgal says there's loads of support out at that point because it's famous. Anyone running regularly in the West or even in South County Dublin will be well able for it.

    What you have to be more careful of, in my (very limited) experience, is the longer 'drags' that don't look like hills but that will tire you... you can see them on the course profile.

    If you've made it to 22 miles intact, you'll skip up Roebuck hill :) and it's (mostly) all downhill from there. ;)

    Just finished my 20mile LSR! Happy to report that no stomach issues like last week. This was also my first inter county run as I crossed the Tipperary border! I ran from Limerick to Birdhill along the old Limerick-Dublin Main Road, as there's cycle lane the whole way there and I was getting tired of trying to add on extra miles to the existing routes I have!

    Splits were good. The last two miles were tough as I was getting tried, but I still managed to keep an overall average of 11:27, which I'm happy with.

    Got a small spasm in my right calf about mile 18.5, which is like what I had before in the Ballybunnion half marathon (about 200m from the finish!) - but I was nowhere near as wrecked today as I was for that. I gave it a quick stretch and it was fine after. No pain or anything, just my body saying 'what the **** are you doing to me!?" Mile 11, nature called so had a quick stop - but I felt quite steady through the first 18. The last 2 dragged a bit but I managed to push through!

    18m LSR done this morning with average pace of 11:32 (pmp +74) although the last two miles crept to over 12min/mile but they were all uphill.

    Found some more blackberries!
    This time in Killiney and Booterstown so continuing on the theme from my Mizen trip!

    Completed the 20M LSR this morning. :) 32.1km @ 6:08 min/km [20.0M @ 9:52 min/mi]

    Up at daft o'clock this morning because real-life needs attention for the remainder of the weekend. :rolleyes:

    A little weary of my usual routes, I decided to head to Phoenix Park to get the job done. I was on the road just before 7am and on my feet just after.

    Overall, a really nice morning, sunrise was fabulous, there were plenty of other runners, plenty of wildlife to be distracted by, including a large herd(?) of deer.

    I did the FD10 route first (with the S-bends instead of outside the Park), then Khyber Road towards Park Gate, back up towards Castleknock, down-and-up towards the Knockmaroon Gate, plus another small lap, to make up the distance.

    Pace a little faster then it should have been, but most running was really very easy and relaxed so I wasn't too bothered at this stage.

    Towards the end, there was some stomach discomfort and my right knee was seizing up a little. But other than that, it went fine.

    Just a quick note to say I finished the Dingle Half a Marathon in 1:50:33 today taking 2 minutes off my PB back in July. Absolutely delighted, absolute proof that the boards plan is working very well for me. Back at the Great Limerick Run in May before starting proper training I set a PB for the half at 1:56:56 and I've broke it my almost two mins in each of the three half marathons I have ran since. Roll on DCM!!

    Fair dues and on a tough course. You should look at the Charleville half next year (it's on Sept 20th this year so timing doesn't really suit marathon training) as it's supposed to be really flat.

    Thanks Chris I did consider that one this year, was choosing between it, Dingle and Athlone but decided on the one closest to home and a good few club mates doing. One I will try fit in sometime! Well done on the 20 mile LSR!

    Nice job! This one is on the bucketlist, I'd love to do it and nearly signed up this year.

    Tried a 3 km recovery run due to the ongoing Achilles problem I've had the last week. Felt ok during it and still feels alright. Might push it to 5km on Monday!

    Dingle Half done in about 1:58. Thanks so much 2hr pacer (Nick ..I think!) Mile 11-12 was killer. Flahhhed! Just back to Tralee now. .taking a badly needed power nap. Fill all ye good folk on more later!!

    Just back in from my 20m lsr. All went well but I could feel a bit of stillness creeping into my calfs in the final couple of miles. I have to say, it feels great to get a 20 miler under my belt.

    It was a lovely morning for a run along the Clontarf seafront and on up to Howth - lots of people out running in race series t-shirts, presumably lots of marathon lsr runners.

    Well done to everyone else whose already done their lsr, and good luck to any of ye who have yet to go out.

    30km long slow run done. Target was 6.00 - 6.10/km. In the end it was bang on 6mins/km so happy enough. Bit of a knee niggle that I have been struggling with recently appeared after just a couple of km but it seemed to level off after a while and actually eased up from around half way. Don't know whether it was run off what but happy enough either way. I'm back in with the physio on Monday anyway.

    Actually lovely day for it - bit breezy but cool enough.

    I must say these distances are long slogs and definitely take their toll on the body. Anyway some stretching & foam rolling now followed by a cold bath.
