It's probably just a combination of all the running over the past few weeks. I did 14 miles last Saturday that was way easier than the 8 I did this morning. Just didn't enjoy it. Just chalk it down to a bad run, and we'll both do better tomorrow!

    Here's hoping ! :)

no doubt you will and he will be right :) the great thing about this forum is that you can come on here and get it all off your chest, you still ran 6+ miles today so that's a positive and, hopefully after a rest tomorrow you calf & Achilles will be feeling better on Friday :)

We really should arrange to run together (in the 4:30 group) - if nothing else, we can motivate and push each other over the line.

Great idea my goal is the same as Mrs mc and toulouse.

Keep smiling and keep running :)

Well that went s*it :( 8 miles easy on the cards Mrs Kennyg kept me company for 5 miles and had to head off the collect Kenny juniors. Was conscious of the tight calves during the run and the niggle in my Achilles. Went on to do the remaining 3 myself and missed the chitter chatter and started to notice the tightness more. Packed it in after 1.2 miles. Got 6.2 miles done but not 8. Am putting it down to massage last night may still have some pain from working out the muscles. Might take a break tomorrow instead of Friday and run Friday assess the situation again. Feeling fed up :( hopefully will get a pep talk from the hubby ... You aren't alone, we all have those runs and in a way they play their own part because you learn to deal with them, learn from them and move on to the next one which WILL be better. Don't dwell on it whatever you do.

It's been a pretty big week too, a PB in a 10 mile race and a sports massage so no wonder your legs aren't feeling the love.

    Sort her out Mr. Mc!!

Very similar here! Ran 8M, first 5.5 with two colleagues. The first part was effortless, chatting away, and the remaining 2.5 was such a struggle!

The difference the company makes is quite remarkable - and it seems you and I both were not expecting how much harder the last bit was going to be. I managed to toughen it out but I was checking the watch every minute to see when I could turn around and head back.

Take a break tomorrow and chalk this one up as "6.2 in the bag!" rather than "missed 1-and-a-bit". You've had a good past couple of days so just treat yourself and no doubt you'll nail the LSR this weekend!

    Evening Ladies and Gents,

Just thought in the absence of your mentor this week it might be useful to do a quick round up on the two major themes that appear to be the focus of discussion on here for the last couple of days.

    TARGETS and GOALS

It is not unusual for this to take centre stage after a race weekend as everybody if looking at their performance and the performance of others and trying to extrapolate out to the main event. While this makes great food for thought and discussion, you may be best served to keep this to occupy your mind during taper when you will be looking for something to worry about anyway :o For now the targets and goals you should be focused on are those in the plan for tomorrow....achieve them and move on to the next day. One day at a time sweet Jesus and all that

However, the key point I would suggest that you take from the discussion on this topic is that when is comes to nailing down those goal closer to the big day that you give yourself an range of goals to allow for unforeseen things that might effect your ability to hit your A Goal or even your B Goal.

    GOOD DAYS AND BAD DAYS

We all have these. If it was easy sure everybody would be doing it but everybody is not. I am personally having a bad running week and it is not the first time and won't be the last. What I have learnt over time is that you just have to take them as they come and don't get carry away by the good ones or overly down about the bad ones.......I read an article during my first marathon cycle that said "relish the bad runs as it will help you appreciate the good ones even more" this has stuck with me ever since and I have many runs that I end up relishing. But when they are done they are done I look forward to the next one and hopefully, I get to appreciate it :)

So as you head into the weekend and your next LSR which will be another step forward, can I suggest that you focus on what you have achieved so far over the last 9/10 weeks not on one or two bad runs and certainly not on what might or might not happen over the next 8/9 weeks. HEAD UP, RUN TALL, STAY IN THE NOW and ENJOY because that is what makes it worth it in the end :pac::pac:

Did my LSR last night of 17 miles and while the run went well, I was really sick after I finished! I parked at entrance to Phoenix Park and looped back by my car at least 3 times for water and I took two gels. It was definitely the electrolytes and gels that made turned my stomach and actually never want to take/see another one again. I have a really clean diet (as in I never ever eat any processed food/drinks) so I think my body just didn't deal well with me introducing all this stuff with sweetener, etc. must look into the electrolyte tabs and other natural things I can take for carbs throughout runs, maybe Nakd bars?

In light of my stomach upset last night I have also done out my goals for the marathon:

Goal A is to not s**t myself
    Goal B is 3.39
    Goal C is 3.40
Goal D is to finish at all

Let's hope I can achieve 2 of these goals :-)

Yes think we need some more PMA positive mental attitude .... Feel the mood is turning into fear and apprehension ...... Let's be positive but be mentally prepared for plan BCDE and F .... :) lots of great insight from the mentors and definately makes you think .... But not too much .... Keep it positive. :)

Plenty for everyone to stay positive about. Important to be prepared and just keep ticking off each run, take the bad ones and and the good ones and you'll be surprised how how you go. Last year after each lsr which was the furthest I had run I'd think how am I supposed to add on more next week? But you do!! So much positivity on the day as well. If you have people you know on the course that's always a great boost, plenty of funny signs from supporters, kids enthusiasm looking for high 5's, randomers offering and shouting encouragement along with drinks, orange slices, jellies etc.

Lots of time to go, one run at a time! :)

I'm down in Cork - long trips up to the big smoke take even more away from the family (who have been ultra understanding so far!!!), but I might see if we can spend a 'family day' incorporating the zoo etc :D

Helps re Athlone - must be a lot of sub 3.30 marathon runners in that field!!!
EDIT: Just checked the boards page for this race last year - they have pacers who set the pace for this race as your LSR for your target DCM time (am I making sense). Might be good for someone like me!!!
    Cheers

Cork to Cobh 15 miler on Oct 4th might suit you better

    Morning folks,

Should we get together and have another group LSR on Saturday week? Or leave it until after the half? (or both?)

I was looking at alternate routes that aren't running around the Phoenix Park, i.e. figuring out a 20 mile route that takes in at least some of the marathon route itself, though I'm more than happy to just do the park again :)

Am up for both but if anyone is doing 16 miles Saturday week then that would be cool. Some of the route would be great because I don't trust myself not to get lost doing it on my own.

Tks Bulmers - was reminded about that last night!!

    Week so far:
    Mon: 7M 63 mins
    Tues: 7M - 1M jog, 4* 1M & 8.00 with 400M recoveries, 1M jog c/d (7M total)
Wed: Was supposed to be 7M steady.... got though 5.5M and the head / body just wasn't in it... first time I've failed to hit a daily run target since starting the program (hope it's not a sign of things to come..)

SO - Tonight I will NAIL the 7M progression run ..... "You must expect great things of yourself before you can do them"

I tried it on my own twice last year. Map with me first time and lot of stopping and asking for directions. Ireland isn't great for having road names so added 40 minutes to a 20 mile wondering which road I was on. On my second run a group of lads were doing a run through the park and up through Castleknock. I was on their tails for a few miles until they finally invited me to join them, so take two steps really to be in the gang :D. It made a huge difference to me as I then knew I was running at the right pace and able to hold a conversation. Was devastated they stopped for water but I kept going. You are all very lucky to organise the group runs and having the company makes a huge difference.

    Morning all,
I've been reading with interest all the posts over the few days, especially around the topic of having good/bad running weeks and figured I would add my thoughts to the discussion.
If it wasn't for having a bad couple of runs I wouldn't of found this thread a few weeks ago, which has helped me so so much with both direct advice to me and reading others posts.
Something that I do to help keep me focused is to keep a record of all my runs. I have an excel file [always opened on my computer] with my plan for the DCM and as I complete each run I add the time to the schedule with a little comment on how it went. When I reach a milestone [new distance and/or time record] I mark it in bold and highlight with a different colour. I find myself constantly coming back to the PC and just scrolling through all my achievements in the last year, and then have a little smile to myself.
I wouldn't be the most positive person sometimes and I end up been my own worst enemy, but I find that if I focus on a week at a time, that seems to work for me.
Personally for me this week has been a bit crazy. I had to pull in all my runs by a day, so I can complete my LSR tomorrow instead of Saturday as I'm heading away for the weekend tomorrow evening. I ended skipping my 4 mile run last night because I just wasn't able for it. 10 miler on sat, 4mile on Monday and Tuesday, working 12hr shift on sun, mon, tues & wed - kinda took its toll. With all that said I'm really looking forward to my 14 mile LSR tomorrow morning ........... add to that, that the kids started back to school today, so I get my mornings back. happy days

I reckon you need to get this sorted fairly soon as it'll play on your mind come race day.

Oh yeah - I'd have a bigger difference between the B&C goal
Its a good psychological benefit in having a decent 'other' goal should the wheels come off at mile 20. It'll help keep the mental state a bit more positive.

I think it is important to remind ourselves that we've come a long way since week 1 back in June. If you're ever in doubt about you abilities as a runner or you're having a bad day in the running department just ask yourself "What was I doing this time last year?" and I think the answer will show you how stronger you are.

Thanks, I hadn't planned on going up Knockmaroon hill but it got dark earlier than I had thought it would and there was no way I was turning into the park at Chapelizod on my own!

I've ordered Saltstick capsules so hopefully that will cover the electrolyte end of things and I'll just have to try out gel alternatives. I dont ever want to feel that way again - it was really horrible, I was properly not well with a headache and shivering. But yet I felt fine for pretty much all 17 miles and not a single ache today so I'm learning more about how it's not just learning to run for 26miles but everything else too. Anyway, will have a read of those links now :-)

Genuinely, I'll be happy if I finish the marathon at all (and that's not me doubting that I will) so if I hit my goal of 3.40 then happy days and if I don't sure I'll get it in the next marathon.
