Liverpool need to put Henderson, Can & Milner in midfield and play Firmino & Coutinho off of Benteke

Especially with the difficult away games coming up

Penny has dropped for Rodgers, maybe it's the influence of the new backroom staff. Today we done what was needed in a really tough away game. I could not careless about how many touches Benteke had as it was all part of the ''planned'' tactics to play as we did.

The pitfalls of taking one game and trying to take something from it...

Did we really look like scoring? No.
Did we really look solid? Not partiularly.
Did we control the midfield? Sometimes.

On the other hand, it was a fixture with basically everything leading towards a horrendous dog-fight where the onus was on us to produce and we scraped out with a win.

I'd be willing to bet that this game will bear very little resemblance to most games this season.
Sometimes we'll be lazy and ****e and still win.
Some times we'll be pretty good and lose.

With a surprisingly big upheaval (although maybe not surprising after the atrocious end to last season), we've a lot more to figure out before we have any idea what's going on with this team.

We have a fairly strong idea of the first 15 or so players but that's it really.

This is such ****. We could have easily lost that game today. The way you are talking you would think we sat deep, controlled the game and had some masterful game plan. They dominated for large chunks of the game, waltzed through our midfield at times and created some excellent opportunities. I have no problem with people saying the result is what is important as it is but you need to recongise it was an awful performance bailed out by a piece of magic. The penny has not dropped, ffs. If we play like that against better sides we will be battered. It was only when we got Can on in a three we got some semblance of control.

Really impressed with Gomez. 18 years old and playing out of position and up against a tough wily veteran in Walters. Looked very composed and assured. Probably won't offer too much going forward from left-back but could be a real gem at centre-half when he eventually gets a chance there.

Yea but can he do it on a balmy Sunday afternoon in Stoke?

Wins a win, not going to get carried away with how anyone played, or how other teams played, its only the first game of the season.

Today was never going to be pretty though.

There's not a whole lot you can read into it, same as any first game of the season.

Well, let's see if Rodgers learns from this.

When in doubt, kick it over 63.6% of the Stoke team.

Or - when in doubt, throw on a kraut.

I think when you look at our summer dealings Rodgers wants us to play a diamond but the right players just weren't 100% fit yet and in fairness ibe and Lallana had both impressed in pre season and deserved a chance.

Stoke are píssy to play against, and Rodgers had the system wrong for 60 minutes. The minute Can came on, Milner and Hendo could support the attack and actually try to hurt Stoke. It's a novel idea, having your midfielders do what they're actually best at. You'd wonder why he didn't think of it to start with.

I get what you're saying but are we maybe not giving Rodgers enough credit? It was a near Chelsea like display in that they kept the home side quiet for an hour, sucked much of the life out of them before making the change to get the winning goal. I'd like to think that there was at least something of that thinking behind the selection and performance today but it's probably too early to know.

Just thinking too, I think the league is going to be extremely competitive this season. Lots of clubs have invested very well IMO.

Nothing should be taken for granted.

Swansea and West Ham for two have already shown how difficult a lot of games are going to be.

A win at Stoke could look very good later in the season.

The absolute state of this thread but it's to be expected. The regular whingers must have been gutted when Coutinho smashed that ball in. They probably had to delete their novel of discontent to replace it with 'good win'. :pac:

That was a brilliant win. To go to Stoke first day of the season and get three points is a super performance from the lads. Absolutely chuffed with that.

 Gutted that the team they/we support won!

Oh absolutely. If we take the posts literally.

I think you're straying into 'saddo' territory unfortunately. Those of us critical of the manager / owners at times are most definitely unwavering in our desire to see the club succeed.

I have never once seen any poster on here no matter what their stance is on players or the manger say they want to see the team lose.

Ah you're right Lloyd. We should have 'smashed' them. Let's see how Chelsea, Arsenal, City and Man U 'smash' them.

Everyone is in good form as far as I can see. Odd statement.

I do think Rodgers decided to be pragmatic to some degree all right. You could see a lot of passing to just keep possession and when Stoke had the ball two banks for them to play through. No harm either, until the likes of Firmino are ready to play a full game and the various partnerships are all figured out a conservative strategy might be default for the away games in particular.

Of course you haven't. But they want the team to lose so the manager gets sacked.. And they do.

I have been as vocal as anyone on my stance that Rodgers isn't good enough for the job.

I have never once wished or hoped the club I have supported for over 30 years lost a game.

We want the team to win lots of games. We are worried that the team won't win lots of games because of failings on the part of the manager. But we most definitely want the team to win. I was watching the game with a Liverpool fan and we jumped up and high fived, etc when Coutinho dinged that in.

The inability of those to deal with negative / critical posting is hilarious tbh. Sheep.

Many wanted Hodgson out. Him winning games wouldn't have helped much with that agenda.

I don't think it's that big of a stretch to believe there are some people who believe that BR is that bad that the best thing for the club would be to take defeats so he will get the bullet, all for the greater good of course.

Delighted with the win today. Always tough away to Stoke. Have some players now to come off the bench to change a game. Skrtel and Joe Gomez played well.
