Hard luck, we all have bad days, forget about it and move on from it. You learned something from it at least & thats an important thing, longer stuff is not for you at the minute. Concentrate on the shorter stuff for the rest of the year like you planned, all the cool people are doing it!! Up Fermanagh!!

Ah no!!! definitely it hasn't come to knitting I don't think ... sorry to hear about the bad race, guess just need a longer build-up in future.

Hope the foot is ok & make sure you have a day or two off!

Ok, step away from the knitting needles . Sorry to hear this wasn't the best experience FD. Did I really say it was a stupid idea - apologies, I'm morto :o, that's a rich statement coming from me who has probably made more racing mistakes than the entire population of boards combined!

I hope you're feeling a bit better about it now that it's written down and you have some perspective on it. Good on you for digging in and crossing the finish line when it would have been so much easier to bail. +1 to tang1 and hilly's comments. Now, rest up, then go plan for those 5K and 10K PBs :D

Thanks Tang, I needed that laugh :)

there will certainly be several days off that's for sure! yep, you're right, a longer and better buildup would have helped.

don't be morto, you were right, you know my training plan, you knew I'd said I was sticking to the shorter stuff, I just didn't want to hear it. Am a bit like a magpie when I see something shiny that catches my attention :) Anyway, yes I'm starting to move on & put it behind me. Thanks guys.

Love the way you take so many positives out of this. And yes, perspective ;) My sis had a rubbish day in competition yesterday. I told her to wallow in it for five more minutes then to jump out of it and go get a drink (think she already had a drink in the hand!). Sounds like you've already done that, fair play (and the drink!?)

Oh no - sorry to hear about the bad day at the office, FD! Hopefully it'll mean we'll see you tear up the tarmac at the local parkruns.

    mileage for July
    142.51

    Jan 2015 | 0
    Feb 2015 | 50
    March 2015 | 85.07
    April 2015 | 97.65
    May 2015 | 125.7
    June 2015 | 73.7
    July 2015 |142.51

Monday 3rd August 1.5 hour walk in St Catherine's park with the dog, took a different route and discovered a fairy garden, someone has gone to a lot of trouble on this, really lovely. Followed by 30 min swim and sauna to ease the aching joints. Have decided on 'no plan' for the week, just run when I feel like it for any distance at any pace, sans watch(!) and see how it goes.

They were feisty and the last ten minutes were great fun. Did Ulster proud :)

As for you, missis, just catching up, I'm way behind. You did a great HM in Chicago... sounds like you didn't have a good day from start to finish at R&R.. the stress of being late, looking for your friend, etc., all counts. Plus you did 40 miles the week before (has the poor dog recovered yet?) and probably too much the day before...

And you didn't throw in the towel, so you won that mental battle. I'll be interested to hear your reflections after letting it sit for a while and getting over the initial disappointment. There's always the race series HM... :)

welcome back! look forward to hearing about the hols maybe over a LSR on the canal sometime :)
yep you're right, all of those were factors for sure. I"m still bitterly disappointed in myself for doing it when I wasn't properly prepared and not doing anywhere near what I had hoped for. But, looking back it wasn't all bad, apart from the missing water station (or at least where I thought it should have been) it was a very well organised race and in fairness the bands gave me a lift when I really needed it so it wasn't the worst race I've ever taken part in. Pity I didn't just run & enjoy it but what's done is done!!! Looking at the race pics you'd think I was having a ball :D
I haven't been able to run on the foot yet though which is a bit worrying but am icing & doing some kettlebell work & foam rolling and the dog is thrilled to be getting extra long walks, I even had time to hoover - MIDWEEK!!! & read career move's race report which really puts the rest of us in the ha'penny place!

Tuesday 4th August 30 min kettle bell session/body weight exercises followed by foam rolling & stretching. 50 min walk

Wednesday 5th August as above again, 30 min workout & 45 min walk followed by foam rolling/stick work/spikey ball work (sure might as well throw the whole arsenal at it..)

Thursday 6th August 2 hours pulling out weeds in the garden - probably sorer after this than the previous 2 days kettle bell workouts!! 30 min walk

Friday 7th August did some slow jogging this mornings dog walk to see how the foot is, my previous injury was heel pain = plantar fasciitis, this time the pain is across the top of my foot, right where my laces are and its quite sore. I do think its the same injury, just the the pain has moved to a different location although I've sought some advice on that so will see what the expert opinion is. I think that it seemed to lesson as the jog went on (lots of stopping and starting) so I might try a non dog accompanied jog tomorrow at some stage. Obviously that's a week of my training down the swanny and now, it seems that my nieces christening is on the same weekend as The Lakes 10K (although not the same day) so I'm not sure whether it's feasible to shag off down to Blessington while the house fills up with visitors arriving from various parts of the world/country  we'll see...

no lbs lost this week but none gained either..

Friday 7th August PM beautiful eve so brought the dog to St Catherines with the idea of doing a jog/walk, clearly Bungy Girl and possibly Anna have been communicating with him somehow as he refused point blank to run on the tarmac paths but took off like a bat out of hell on the football pitches :) I took my lead from that and jogged the perimeter of the pitches a couple of times, foot felt so so but stuck it out. No watch so no idea of distance or pace but I'd guess a tiny tiny 1 mile maybe 1.5 @ 11/11.30 pace.
Followed by 30 mins kettle bell work out.

Saturday 8th August 2015 AM Cabinteely parkrun volunteering, this always puts me in a good mood, beautiful park, beautiful sunshine and the best company :) followed by a scone I didn't earn(!). Stopped off for a quick swim & sauna on the way home.
PM: Buoyed on by some impressive running this morning I headed back to St Catherines with the dog, a bit more success today, again no watch but I'd say 3 miles maybe 3.5 at around 11 pace or so but lots of stopping and starting which was no harm at all. Will try some solo running tomorrow! Foot still 'sore' but wasn't unbearable as it had been earlier in the week.

Sat down to watch back to back quarter finals to discover that yet again they weren't on RTE  Meno no doubt you're a happy man this eve, sounds like it was an exciting end to the match! Anna, sorry Donegal didn't get through.

Glad to see you're easing back into it, FD... the dog is right, stay on the grass!

As for Croker today, oh well... I'll have to resort to my second team now, at least today's result avoids a family crisis... Up de dubs! :)

Pssstt FD...you did the Bray to Greystones social gathering run. Is it 6 miles from Bray to Greystones? Does it suck the living out of your legs? Would it be possible to do Bray to Greystones and back to Bray or is it a tough enough run that you could only do one way? And finally :D Is it a bit stressful footing wise?

Ive a 12 m run next weekend and this might be a nice change.

I'll take the light out of your eyes now :D

Hi hanny, first answer, no it wasn't 6 miles, only 4, I'm sure you could add an extra couple of miles by starting & finishing somewhere on both sides. It is a nice route and not very tough especially if taking it handy - if I was doing it id finish in greystones as lots of lovely cafes for post run coffee :-)

Sunday 9th August Started the day off by watching some of the iron man coming through Dunboyne while out walking the dog, it was quite early (8ish) so they were coming through in dribs and drabs so I didn't hang around. Some of the bikes were very impressive looking indeed...

followed by my own mini triathlon*

AM: Swim, 30 mins with much less resting than of late, actually put some effort into this, combined with some squats & stretches in the pool. lovely sauna afterwards.
14 mile cycle with a club mate who was doing her LSR, payback for last year, she came out with me for every one of mine but I can't return the favour this year as she's doing the Hansen plan so her Sunday run is at MP +30 sec, way faster than I could manage even without a sore foot!! this is going to be the plan every week when I'm free, it costs me nothing energy wise and I really enjoyed it.
PM3 miles @ 10.15 it seems when I tie my laces a particular way the foot is less sore (possibly better supported) it was niggling away but didn't stop me running. Found this incredibly tough and draining, very very hot but delighted to have completed a run even a measly 3 miles.

*clearly not enough involved to be banished to the dark side forum just yet :)

Watch the foot ... could be lots of things apart from plantar issues. Top of foot sounds like something else ....

Started my own triathlon training today, but I only got part of the way as my *bike* picked up an injury en route and I had to take the train home ;)

I think my left foot just objects in general to running, I'm on my 3rd 'injury' to it starting in May last year! Oh crikey what a pain re the bike, its like something is conspiring against us M

Monday 10th August 5 miles @ 10.25, what a difference a couple of stretches make... , did this with a clubmate, took it nice and handy, bounced along and felt great. Had asked for advice on the change of pain in the foot and got suggestions for two exercises, one is using your toes to pull a towel towards you, who'd have thought something so simple could make such a difference in a matter of days. Will see how the foot is tomorrow but fingers crossed its on the mend again.
Followed by 20 mins strength session

Tuesday 11th August Club session 3 x 800's and 1 x 1200. The group session was 4 x 1200 but I wasn't taking a chance on the foot, also the body is still quite tired from the Half M so decided to do 800's. Made a mess of the lap button for the last one but times were consistent enough when called out so:

    7th July 3.52, 3.55, 4.00, 3:57, 4:00
    14th July 3:51, 3:53, 3:56, 3:56, 4:00
    21st July 3:50, 3:52, 3:59, 3:54, 4:03, 4:59 (last rep for 1000)
    11th Aug 3.45, 3.55, 3.55, & 5.50 for the 1200

am surprised to still see some progress on a couple of these, possibly explains the mini asthma attack it felt like I was having on the track!! Although this could equally have been from the god awful slurry fumes coming from nearby fields - jaysus, rank! I also skipped a rep but did a lap at easy pace instead. Found this very very tough going but good to be back doing speed after the unplanned break.
Only managed .5 mile warm up and .76 cooldown
Foot was 'ok' throughout with just a niggle or two, iced, stretched & foam rolled afterwards.

Mind that foot, the ligaments on the top of my foot tightened up so badly they contributed to me getting stress fractures. Are you noticing a "clawing" effect (hammer toe) on your toes?

    TbL

had to google hammer toes, no thankfully, that pain that was there after rock n roll at the top of my foot is gone after a few days stretches. Am back to the normal niggle under foot at the heal  did you ever find out why that happened TBL? We put our feet under quite an amount of stress don't we!!!

Wednesday 12th Aug wow, what an absolutely glorious evening, not many of these left so headed to St Catherines with the dog again for a recovery jog, (plan said rest day) no watch probably 2 miles or so. Sat looking at the views of the Dublin mountains while doing some stretches :). Followed by 45 mins strength session & foam rolling. Niggles ok.

    Listen to that body...

    Lecture over :D
