Yeah, I've missed out on the hot weather hardship this week. I'm back on track with rehab, the plan was to start week 2 on Wednesday with a 30 minute jog every second day and rehab exercises on the interim days. Achilles is fine, the week rest and rehab seem to have done the trick but swollen glands and sore throat pushed back the return to jogging
Anyway, got out for 30 mins Friday and 30 mins this morning so all good so far yay.
I'll be catching up with them novices come August :D
Looks like your base building has lots of lovely nice long easy running!

Great, glad to hear it! Not about the swollen glands etc. but the fact that you're getting back now. Another week of nice long easy running ahead, then I get to add some strides in Week 3 (so excited about this :D)

    Monday – Short & Easy

Another soft day. Less enthused about this one it must be said – it was freezing! Got a dose of Raynauds* (in July, ffs) and couldn’t use my hands properly for about an hour. Apart from that, all good, did 4 laps of the park which was empty except for one man who was taking shelter under the bandstand. He was still there on the last lap and I was tempted to tell him he was going to be there for while if he was waiting for it to stop. Poor man will be there until dark the rate it’s pouring down.

    Good work tho :)

I have that too, but always after the long runs. It's a bit of a freak-show isn't it?

:D I'd need a few jelly babies for that one. Next week maybe ;)

It is! I even took a photo of mine this morning. BG Jr is always giving out that my hands are 'freezin'

Seems to be really common among runners, I know loads who have it. Now if I could do an Elsa and build myself an ice palace that would be awesome.

    Tuesday – Easy Run

Enjoyable run from Griffith Park uphill to Albert College Park (‘Albo’ to those in the know ;)), a couple of laps in there while I got all nostalgic for my college days, remembering the last time I was in the park – drinking Ritz out of a can. Running laps would’ve been the last thing on my mind. Back home via Griffith Ave. All good.

Wednesday – Easy (longer) Run #1 of 2

This turned out to be a bit of a slog. I realised just as I was leaving the house for Pilates that I was hungry but it was too late at that stage to eat anything. Pilates was good, and I started my run feeling ok but just felt drained after a couple of miles. Definitely down to not eating enough earlier in the day. Dragged myself up the coast, half way around St.Anne’s and home via Howth Road and Griffith Ave. Really glad when it was over which is not like me. Lesson learned: fuel up! I think, too, I run better in the mornings when I have a set breakfast and can just eat and run. Running in the evening before dinner just doesn’t sit as well with me.
    • 7.5 miles @ 9:28 min/mile (path, grass/trail)

    Thursday – REST

Aaaaaahhhhhhhh. Needed this. Included body fat test at DCU (they were looking for guinea pigs). Dubious result (much as I would like to believe I have the body composition of an athlete, I am sceptical. It is more likely they misplaced a decimal point :o) but interesting experience all the same.

Friday – Easy (longer) Run #2 of 2

Pilates, followed by a trip out to Howth for the 2nd medium-long run of the week. Did a mile on the flat then the full Fat Turkey 10K route including THAT hill up to the summit car park. Finished up with a final flat mile. Kept the effort very easy, the splits of course are all over the place because of the gradient. Never get tired of the views on this route. Fab morning.
    • 8.2 miles incl. Fat Turkey 10K route (path) 162m elevation
    (10K splits: 5:54, 6:48, 5:56, 6:07, 6:30, 5:32, 5:31, 5:54, 5:32, 5:33)

Tomorrow will see 20+ kids descend on the house for BG Jr’s birthday party. What can possibly go wrong, be grand…right ?:eek:

    Saturday – Short & Easy

Home invasion by 20 kids for BG Jr’s birthday party. This is why people outsource. Despite my best efforts chopping fruit and making Mrs. Doyle-esque quantities of sambos, they were all covered in chocolate and full of sugar by the time their parents collected them. Sorry! Escaped afterwards for a few laps of the park.
    • 4.3 miles (grass) @ 8:49 min/miles

    Sunday – LSR

Minions movie (so good!) followed by a long run up the coast, did the Raheny 5 loop then back the same way. Felt good all the way, bit tired for the last couple of miles but happy that the pace was consistent.

Got a warning from the running gods in the form of a niggle in the hip flexor this morning, BUT after some foam rolling and stretching and promises to do better, it felt good enough to run. One of those rare injuries that actually get better when you run. Love them.

Was tempted by this too, sandwiched between an 11 mile tempo and a 20 mile long run, probably couldn't give it my best.

    The mile is the Saturday!

It caught my eye as well (before 'the toe') and I spent a while wondering would it be wrong to do a time trial the day before Fingal ...

Yep, my only one of the Race Series. I land Saturday lunchtime so just a tiny bit too late for the mile in the PP! Can't be sure of the 10k yet but would expect things will be fine by then ....

Finally! I get to add in some strides to all my short runs this week. I am disproportionately excited. Got this in early in the cooling, sprinkly rain, before heading to Pirates Village in Liffey Valley. I would rather hold a plank for an hour than go there again. Back to work tomorrow after more than a week off. At last I'll have time to catch up on Boards ;)
    • 5 miles @ 8:54 min/mile incl. 6 x 20 sec strides (grass, soggy)

Still have a weird niggle in my hip flexor that goes away when I run. Probably kids’ party or spring* cleaning related. Will get it seen to before it morphs into something more sinister.

Tuesday – Easy (longer) Run #1 (of 2)

Got a rare and welcome offer to drop BG Jr off at crèche this morning so took the opportunity to get a longer run done this morning before work. Going to physio later (maintenance plus a few minor niggles) so will no doubt be given the mandatory 24-48 hour rest order which would scupper my plans for the week. So harmony has now been restored to the plan and I don’t have to do two ‘hard’ days in a row.

Out the door before 8 a.m. (before anyone could change their mind!) and ran up as far as the end of the pier and back. Nice running weather, cool enough and little or no breeze along the coast for a change.
    • 7.8 miles @ 8:48 min/miles

Rest day tomorrow except for Pilates (and maybe the gym) then back on plan from Thursday and hopefully hit this week’s target mileage.

    Wednesday – S&C

Rest day from running following a tortuous (but beneficial) physical therapy session the previous evening. It was for maintenance really but also got a few niggles taken care of. Can’t miss Pilates though or I’ll fall apart at the seams. It was a tough class with the instructor throwing in some advanced moves (FAIL!:o). Also did a couple of sets in the gym. Walked home, such discipline :D.

    Thursday – Double Day

With the miles increasing, today’s double was the only way to make sure of reaching the week’s mileage target without messing up the hard/easy structure of the plan. Was grand, if a bit wet and soggy. Enjoyed the strides.
    • 3.5 miles incl. 6 x 20 sec strides @ 8:54 (grass, path) a.m.
    • 3.5 miles incl. 6 x 20 sec strides @ 8:51 (grass, path) p.m.

Friday – Easy (longer) Run #2 of 2

Headed to Howth after Pilates for the same Bog of Frogs loop as 2 weeks ago. Kept it easy and glad to see the time about 90 seconds quicker for the same effort. Wasn’t too busy up there, (probably a bit too windy for the faint-hearted), but very overgrown on the Sutton side with the trail disappearing under the overgrowth in places. Felt a bit like running in the jungle. Lots of beastie bites and scratches to show for it. No frogs to be seen, although I did see a rabbit. Really wanted to stop for an ice cream in Howth but resisted.

Can’t believe I’m on track for a 45 mile week! I checked back on my (ill-fated it must be said) marathon training log from the olden days (2007) and my mileage peaked at 29 . I should post it on to the Novices thread under a pseudonym and give poor Dubgal a heart attack :D.
