Isn't it unfair to Priests and Christians who don't agree with gay marriage, to allow gay marriage?

    1) Is it unfair to non-Christians to force them to follow Christian rules?

    2) For the umpteenth time; no-one will be forcing priests to perform SSM. This referendum is a civil matter, not a religious one.

oh yeah. Hear it all the time about people who are just voting yes to be cool and part of the group think are labeling people.

If someone is asked for a poll what way they're voting, and they lie, they're a liar. And most likely a bigot as there has not been one non-bigoted reason for voting No put forward so far.

Why would someone lie? For a quiet life? Then they're a coward and a hypocrite. If you want to vote No, by all means do so, but at least have the courage of your convictions!
Theres been reasons provided but you lovely equality crusaders just label the reasons bigoted and person a bigot. Once the word no is seen they just get the label irregardless of what is said.

It's a secret ballot. Not everyone wants to share their voting intentions in public.

Its as funny as those preaching equality before going and discriminating!

I was alone in the polling station but as I leaving a cranky/angry/impatient looking man came in. Immediately I jumped to the conclusion that he was a No voter! :)

One of my mates, who happens to be gay, was wearing his Yes Equality badge earlier when he noticed an aul wan cop it at the bus stop. He was mentally preparing to defend himself when she told him she would be voting Yes and had persuaded all her mates to as well!

Lesson being, you can't tell based on appearance! :D

We are all still awaiting that one killer valid argument from the No side. Do you have it?

Then surely they should decline to answer entirely, rather than lie?

Funny that people voting for discrimination pretend they care.

Yeah not hypocritical to be saying that. Sure it wouldnt be in the spirit of equality if the yes side were to label those different to them as bigots. Sure dont they say everyone is the same and equal?

If any side can be called hypocrites its the yes. What with there constant labelling of people.

    Defensive much?

What has been labelled as bigoted is some of the reasons people have given for voting No. Unfortunately discovering that you are harbouring what appear to be some unpleasant prejudices can be jarring for people, and not everyone is willing to look at the facts and change their opinion.

To be fair, it really is bigotted to maintain a prejudice against the known facts.

So if you still think being gay is abnormal, or that gay people are automatically inferior parents, or that gay men are automatically paedophiles, then expect to be called out on your prejudice.

Do you believe there's "equality" between evolution and young Earth creationism?

I've just heard that the turnout has passed 25% now. What was the percentage at this point during the last referendum?

What discrimination are you facing now?

Theres been reasons provided but you lovely equality crusaders just label the reasons bigoted and person a bigot. Once the word no is seen they just get the label irregardless of what is said.

There hasn't been a reason provided which isn't either entirely unrelated to what is actually being voted on e.g. surrogacy, think of the children, a child deserves a mother and a father etc. - all entirely unrelated or completely dishonest or specious.

Alternatively you have an argument from tradition 'it's always been this way so it should always stay that way', or people who have to take their morals from the Catholic Church of all places, the facilitators of child abuse.

Iona et al don't give two ****s about children's rights, except where they try to use them to argue against the next social reform which is going to reduce the corrosive influence of the Catholic Church in this country.

I don't know, but that's high considering the after work/after dinner voter surge. I'll be delighted if it goes north of 65%.

Peak time is between 5 and 8 pm. Usually between a 3rd and half of all votes are cast between there so it should be at least 65%

Your example would make sense if anyone was advocating making you have less rights because of your bigoted views. Funnily, I haven't seen anyone suggesting that.

I can run with that one.

True, but if you were asked a personal question and faced with a choice of either lying, or not answering, why would you not just decline to answer? It would involve less lying.

    when will we know results?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 510 ✭✭✭murphm45

Just out of curiosity have people actually read the constitution (or the specific boy that relates to this issue)? If you have you'll see there's no definition of marriage there. This equality people are talking about could be very easily arrived legislatively. The only reason I say this is because based on some of the comments I've read and seen I suspect many people don't fully understand (that may not be the best word) the change and are jumping to one side or the other for the wrong reason (e.g. Coming home to voter yes just so they show how liberal Ireland is, or no because God says so)

Still not sure how I'll vote yet but just wanted to throw my 2c worth onto the thread.

Please to provide said non-bigoted reason.

Referendum Commission and the Law Society disagree with you, but what do they know.

Exit polls after 10pm. Final result by about lunchtime tomorrow, depending on how close it is.

There you go. I stand corrected so. My humble apologies. Hmmm I wonder why though, clearly not reading is required. Damn, this is complicated!!

I disagree about how complicated it is. All it is doing is allowing same sex couples marry, and then, them and their children would then be protected under the definition of Family in the constitution. It gives them what I have and takes nothing away from me.

It could be done but the professionals think that it could be contested, and it would definitely be attempted. They take into account what was meant at the time of writing which would have been assumed marriage is between a man and a woman. This way we are adding a part to make it clear that same sex couples can marry by adding a small line at the end.
