Haven't been in this forum for a while ... been busy - moved to Cork, new job, co running a business on the side, cycling, some running ... yada yada yada ...

2012 saw me do a LOT of cycling and NO run racing that I can think off. I did my masters and was self employed on the side

2013 saw me move to Cork, pick back up the running and the cycling in some aspects transferred over to my running as well as haven worked on my strength a little. I did the relay in Cork in June and today was my first long race on the road since DCM 2011

Did the human race 30k in Limerick. 2:05xx. Iv kept some fire burning somehow since 2011. 3 10k laps.

1st lap stayed between the 3 and 3:15 marathon pacer balloons but after the first few K, it was too conservative for me. In the second lap at the start I stayed with the 3hour pacer. and halfway in picked it up and stayed consistently ahead til the end.

At that pace, I had maybe 2-3 more miles in the legs before I would have slowed down. Very encouraging!

    I missed you Mabs

I havent been here in a long time.

    Tempted to get logging again.

The last few months have been solidly back running and now have decided I need to join a club here in Cork. I miss the track sessions from West Limerick / Doneen when I was in Limerick on the UL track.

I have totted upwards of 60 and 70 mile weeks with everything in between the last while. Structured but not anal with structure on the training. Marathon was in the marks but i hadn't decided on one. Was thinking Cork in June as a good target to PB (3:13:xx). I, on a whim, signed up for Limerick so am doing that Sunday but it won't be my A race this year.

I know that I can PB Sunday. I raced only twice last year and the year before 30k in 2:05:xx tells me that I already know I am close to 3 hours. Last summers string of training and the last 2-3 months tell me that my fitness is on par with the 30k race, if not a little better. It's a lack of confidence to some degree on my part .... and for me, it's much easier to say a safe option of 3:05 because that way I don't set myself up for failure. I know that I have to take a risk though. A club will help me tremendously here and I should have done so at the start of the year.

I am in two minds on Sunday. It's not my A race as I am not 'A' ready but I reckon that I will slot in between the 3:00 and 3:15 pacers. I have some longer runs done fairly comfortable at 7:00 and 6:50 miles and faster. I don't wan't a bad experience Sunday and to make recovery longer than it should. I want to finish and not be destroyed.

The last 2 weeks have not been ideal from a taper POV. Last week, not enough sleep and rest. This week I felt my throat get sore so decided to step back from any training Tue - Thurs and feel just fine now. Will get in 4 miles later this morning and 10-15 minutes tomorrow easy wearing all my kit for Sunday. This week I have been travelling to Edinburgh for Work so although sleep has been just fine, food has been ****e- eating out the last 2 nights in Pizza Express FFS but am back to the plain foods for the next 2 days and let my digestive system chillout.

Anyway, the ramblings of a madman who hasn't ran a marathon since DCM 2011 .... so even though this isn't an A race, and in theory, I should be able to relax, I am still in a little mini taper frenzy. I know i was in a mini taper frenzy when work colleagues went to the pub for 2 drinks after a work event yesterday and i was there with my water and pepsi thinking 'there are far too many people in this pub', 'did she sneeze behind me'.

Let the fun and games begin.

Just a repost of what I threw up on the GLR thread

Well done to all that ran.

I clocked in officially at 3:06:10. Mixed emotions about it but happy as it's a decent clip off my last marathon and I knew waking up yesterday morning that the legs were a little 'lifeless' for the want of a better word. Ran the second half slightly faster and picked it up for the last 10k coming towards the city from Raheen with a few sub 7 miles for the first time in the race. Coming into Raheen and the industrial estate onto the long drag after the pass-over / bridge adjacent to the Crescent Shopping Centre, it was great as there was mise, a runner from Doneen AC and another guy and it was great having us all bang on pace, working together. Once I picked up the pace in the last 10k, it was lonely in Thomandgate. Running out to towards Thomand Park, I was alone and it's hard at that stage. Ran by a handful of runners at the Gaelic grounds and again in North Circular Road and it helped pick me up. When I passed by the final timer at the mile to go mark, I knew it was all good and got the final kick coming into Clancy's strand and the city again.

I won't really comment on the organization as my aim was the run but yes, I think there were little bits and pieces that could be flagged for next year. I thought the marathon was just fine, most marshalls helpful, good support on the route (helps when you know the locals!).

I bet that doneen lad was Bulmers74, he seemed to be around your pace for most of the run yesterday.

Well done will you go for a sub 3 in the autumn do you reckon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,991 ✭✭✭metamorphosis

Cheers Niall, yeah I was chatting to the Doneen chap after in baggage collection and sent bulmers a PM there to suss out if it's him as it ties into the time he said he finished.

I will have a think about the autumn, I don;t want to half commit to it. I might just chase some new PBs with a half and 10k and be content there ................

You make a good point! Well, next time, say hi, and more likely than not, I wont give a you a funny look.

Anyway, after 0 running since last Sunday and sitting back enjoying my food and working all week, I am heading out in a few minutes to clock a few miles and see how I feel.

Few more days to decide what I will do re. Cork - I think the half is pretty much nearly sold out and i have been asked to do a relay. Not sure which to do, but not much time to decide.

What a horrible run back into things.

    7.07 miles. 55:37, 7:52 m/m

Did an out and back loop from the apartment. It was a stitch that ruined it for me from mile 3 on. It was a nasty little thing. Last 2 miles, the legs got heavyish. Sure and simple sign that the legs are not fully right yet, as would be expected.

Overall, a very lethargic, stitchy run.

Sunday, I just jumped on the bike indoors. I teach a class that has indoor bikes and strain gauge technology to measure power.

I did 6 rounds of of 6 minute intervals at 7-10 beats below lactate threshold heart rate / a few % below functional threshold power. Felt good. That reminds me, I must organize myself to get my threshold tested soon, it has been a while.

Monday, I did 4 easy miles @8:08. Felt better than Saturdays 7 mile disaster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,991 ✭✭✭metamorphosis

    13.12 miles
    7:46 / mile.

Cork half marathon is penciled in now. Went out this evening with no set plan, just wanted to get about an hour in but felt good running at this pace and body felt more aligned (anything was going to be an improvement on Saturdays disaster) that I extended my loop and took longer route.

For those familiar with Cork, I started near Centre Park rd, along the marina, Blackrock Castle, along the waterfront to just beyond Jacobs Island then onto Rochestown making my way to Douglas, back to Skehard rd, Mahon back to blackrock and railway line back down to Parc Ui Caoimh and back to the city centre.

I am running too many runs in a rut. My faster runs are too slow in most cases. If I can bang out 9 miles at 6:30 pace and feel relatively comfortable, I need to start fine tuning training more and altering things. I also run some slower runs too fast. Most of my runs fall into 6:30-7:30. No mans land. This needs to be addressed.

I am teaching tomorrow evening and wont run but will pencil in Thursday and the weekend.

this evening felt nice though. Lovely evening and got the sunset in.

Same loop this evening as Tuesday and I managed to squeeze in some slightly faster miles from miles 6-10. The watch died just before mile 11 so will post splits later.

Few little bumps and trumps in the body. Booked in for sports massage Saturday morning at 10am .... and will serve as a quick health check and look around to ensure everything that I need functioning is functioning.

I do not like a massage that works to a pain scale!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,991 ✭✭✭metamorphosis

I have decided to rename sports massage sports massacre ... rather fitting.

Friday, to be honest, my body felt like it was feeling the effects of months of long mileage and the two 13 mile runs this week was giving me feedback that although I enjoyed them, I need to take a little more investment in my body. It has been 2 years since I got a sports massage so I went along to Saturday mornings appointment knowing EXACTLY what was in store, unfortunately.

My pelvis needed addressing, which I knew. My right shoulder and knee have been picking up the slack from this for far too long so I got a complete do over from foot to shoulder. Knee feels immediate relief but I will be more proactive in managing my intrinsic bio mechanics that need work. Made a few adjustments and I will get 2 more rubdowns between now and Cork half to keep me ticking over. I think I may have shed a tear or two (possibly more).

Friday, I just wanted to do something I enjoyed and haven't done in a while. Squat, cleans, pressing, bench and a little assistance work. A little time on the bike.

Was teaching this morning and got out for 4 miles @ 7:42 later.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,991 ✭✭✭metamorphosis

Was teaching last night and got out for a few fast miles after. Felt really good after the weekends rub down and felt strong pushing out some faster miles.

    6.64 miles

6:50/6:13/5:56/6:10/6:30/6:30 and 4:49 for the last .64. Stopped the Garmin and had a little jog back to the apartment.

    13.22 miles in 1:41:41

    7:41 avg pace.

    7:55
    7:53
    7:49
    7:54
    7:38
    7:31
    7:42
    7:21
    7:32
    7:39
    7:27
    7:49
    7:39
    1:53 for the last .22

Little jog back to the apartment.

Nothing much to report. Fairly meh day at work. Just got out and got it done.

6 easy miles last night after teaching. Untimed and ran to feel.

Gonna head out for a few miles tonight, then a longer run the weekend and begin to drop some mileage next week a little before the half next weekend.

Another rob down booked in for next week (a.k.a sports massacre) ... which will help my tired body, I hope.

12 miles this evening. Comfortable clip between 7:30-8:00.

Nothing like some cramps to ruin a run. Had small cramps throughout but nothing of concern. Little gas. The final mile, that all changed and I knew I was potentially in trouble. Just made it back to the apartment in time ... but still ... that last mile had the power to make the whole run a bad training run.

To make matters even better, over the last week, I have developed what appears to be some form of rash over my upper arms, trunk, chest and thighs. No other symptoms at all. Pharmacist seems to think it could be viral after taking a look but nothing of concern. A doctors visit will be on the cards Monday. Funny, 1 week, 0 symptoms, 0 change in food and environment. Odd.

Anyway, few slow miles tomorrow, lots of life stuff on Saturday and will be back to it Sunday.

I feel like I am in no mans land wanting to race the Cork half after Limerick full. In a way, looking forward to getting it over with.

I did what I probably shouldn't had on Friday

    4 easy miles early
Met a friend for a few miles later the day and kept on going and did 10.5. The last mile, my tummy acted up again like Thursday run. It had been over 3 hours since I ate and I had gone to the loo so I thought all should be fine. I increased my milk intake last week which I think is to blame as is muesli. Those 2 things generally ensure I go to the toilet in a run so ditch the muesli and drop the milk more.

Saturday was teaching in UL, Limerick that morning and caught some of the referendum count action down in the courts after which was awesome, When I got back to Cork later, did 4 easy miles.

    Was teaching Sunday, no run.

A little over 56 miles for the week.

Easier week this week. Need to prioritize sleep more leading up to next Monday.

Not feeling fresh or on the ball leading up to the half so not sure what to expect but a week is still a long time to recoup mentally and physically.

Monday was a bank holiday in Scotland. Working for Scotland, I got to enjoy it off. Hit the gym in the AM for some strength and mobility.
I was teaching that night on the bike.

Tuesday, I was teaching, then went for 4 miles after @ 7:30 pace

Wednesday, Was teaching at 8, but got on the bike myself before hand. Easy recovery ride @20-30 beats below LTHR

Tonight, Work was just ... well, one of those days. Then had a call at 8pm for a client that I am doing a side job with and now am going to head out for 6 miles and see how I feel.

Tomorrow, will get 4 miles in in the AM. Have a rubdown booked in. Saturday will rest and Sunday a short 2-3 miles.

I am not really overly enthusiastic about Monday tbh as I really don;t know where I stand. If I got in or around 1:25, i'd be happy.

Best of luck tomorrow R. I know you've said you're not overly enthusiac about the race but don't put too much pressure on yourself. I know it's a bit of a balancing act between recovery from Limerick & keeping things ticking over but I think you struck a good balance. You have all the strength of marathon training in the legs so you'll do great. Enjoy :)

Cheers J.I am hoping some of it clicks into place tomorrow. I can honestly say since the marathon. I have had one great, fast run and the others just felt flat but I guess, some of that is to be expected and I have to realign expectations of the weeks following Limerick too.

Sleep hasn't been the best over the last 2 nights but I know I have a buffer of margin of error with the half compared to the full.

Plan from above changed. Ended up doing 5 miles Thursday at 7:20 pace and they were enjoyable enough. Rested Friday, did a little under 4 miles without the watch Saturday morning before the mam and sister visited. Showed them Cork and spent the day with them before sending them on their way that evening.

Went and collected my number at the expo this afternoon. Nothing much to report on the expo tbh. Got food with a friend a while ago and feet up with a cuppa tea now and will relax for the evening :-)

Here's hoping the wind holds off tomorrow for the half somewhat. The rain doesn't bother me, it's the wind! Plus, the start line for the half is about 100 metres from the apartment!

Haha, thanks. Will do a race report later. Pleased with today. The whole experience is funny. When I woke up this morning, I didn't really feel much sense of urgency. Had breakfast, coffee, obligatory toilet trip. Met up with a friend by city hall and we strolled over together. I did a half mile up and back down centre park road a few minutes before the start and then shuffled up to the front. The 1.30 pacers slotted a few feet in front of me. When we started, the first mile was a bit mad with the congestion and people who should be further back, right up front. After the first 2 miles were in the bag, I just knew that it was going to be okay. Mile 3 I saw a 6:14 mile, and I knew it was my day for a PB. Mentally, this race was easy for me. I knew much of the route and in a funny way, for the last 10k, I brought myself back to Limerick marathon, where I did my fastest miles in the last 10k, most under 7:00 min/ miles so mentally, it was a case of 'Richard, you're not even hurting, push it out, you know the area'.

I think I did well here, but I need to embrace the pain barrier more, I really do. If I am going to get an output of what my abilities are, I need to spend more time here.

The weather wasn't the worst, but wasn't the best. A small group took turns drafting running out the link road and I spend about 1 - 1.5 miles side by side with a runner with a Tulla (something, maybe tullamoore) AC singlet on. I felt the wind was more a factor in the first half then the second half for sure. Despite the weather, the support was okay along the route. Around mile 6, there were a bunch of kids telling people that they were going awfully slow, it was funny and a bit of a pick me up. It certainly made me smile anyway but then again, I hadn't just run 19 miles :)

I have no doubt that I could have chipped another little bit of time off today had I embraced the pain barrier more. Up til mile 11.5, I kept it a tad too comfortable and then stormed off for the last 1.5 miles.

    Splits were:
    6:39
    6:52
    6:14
    6:21
    6:28
    6:26
    6:11
    6:10
    6:19
    6:10
    6:11
    6:02
    5:49
    :58

1:22:49 watch, I think 1:23:02 chip but was racing to try and get under for the 1:22:59 mark that I didn't pay too much attention

Now to the Sextant for a pint!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 785 ✭✭✭Notwork Error

Haha! When Bulmers calls you a sandbagger, you know you've reached a level of elite bluffing:pac:. I knew it after you talking down your chances in Limerick and then finishing as strong as you did. Cracking result and enjoy the pints! More to come no doubt.

Thanks ... it's funny as I often get referred to as a sandbagger in work ... under promising and over delivering (sometimes).

Dublin sub 3 is in my head now. I think, if things go right, that it is a real possibility.

In the interim, I now know I have a new 10 mile PB to get (60:5X) and I have a 10k PB to get too.
I am going to look at races coming up and prioritize a 10 mile and 10k course over the coming weeks. This will also ensure that i embrace that pain barrier a little more as I race all too infrequently.

If I got a sub 60 10 mile, I would be really happy. That would be 3 PBs for me over a close proximity and would add to 2015 been a good year so far.
