those are quite the splits anna! no problem holding on for another few miles :) have you a half in mind? sorry if I missed that somewhere else.

Hi FD, yes I'm signed up to do the Cork Half on June 1st. Murph is doing the full marathon on the same day. At the beginning of the year, I was targeting trying to get under 2 hours in the Dublin half in september... so Cork might be a bit soon, but sure we'll see.

As for the splits... 2 mins is grand, 2 hours is a bit different!

Ah yes I remember reading that a few pages back, well cork can be a 'see where ur at' race & if you happen to go sub 2 all the better! if not you still have your goal race ahead :) you're flying though so it will all be good no doubt :)

Weren't you pretty close to the 2 hours in the Dublin half in September, like 2.02 or something? You've said yourself your feeling so much more comfortable with the miles at the moment compared to during the summer plus the added sessions from the graduate plan.

Cork is still a good few weeks away with more training under your belt and your recent 10k time was a good indicator too. Those are all positive signs to give you encouragement coming up to Cork that it's achievable.

I like your 'finishing faster' approach. I can't remember who it was, but a female athlete who is performing phenomenally in her 40s and 50s said that she trains 'cleverly and with less intensity' than her glory days. What she did do, was always finish a run fast. I presume it wasn't every run and *of course* she included a warm down after I'm sure...

Yes, I did 2:01:3x in Dublin last year which I was delighted with (compared to 2:19ish the year before). So I'm cautiously optimistic about Cork, but I don't know the course at all and if it's a hot day... but yeah, I will try to go for it for sure.

glory days, what are they? :) I have been practicing that, I think ecoli's continuity thread talked about trying to always finish strong... and one learning from the intervals is that even with recovery the average pace is still ok... I'm thinking I can use that in a longer race... so if I flag for a bit, I should be able to pick it up again later (hopefully)... vs. giving up!

I'm going to give it a lash in Terenure too, so no doubt that will help with the prep too... one way or another!

See you there! The pacers are a brilliant idea, we can just switch our brains off and not have to do sums :D

Sub 2 hrs is no bother to you annapr!! I'd say closer to 1.50 for sure :D

    See you in Terenure Anna!
And you should have my OH to accompany you around with the 40min pacers.
Sub 40 would be a big ask for her but sub 41 should be quite doable.

Saturday, 25th April: 40 mins easy
    6.76km @ 5:56/k
    4.2 mi @ 9:33/mi

Where did April go??? Legs felt great after a rest day yesterday, seafront was very wet and cool, lovely easy run. I didn't even get too mad at the a-hole in the bmw who splashed me crossing Fairview strand... I was so wet it made no difference.

One word for this run: invigorating.

Anna you're putting me to shame I'm still looking out the window trying to muster up some enthusiasm to get out and do my long run. Think I will leave it till the morning it's just not inviting enough out there today :(

A, it was very wet and cold for sure. But once you get going you'll be grand! Sunday's a good day for long runs ;) although somebody said they're predicting snow for tomorrow !!!

    Sunday 26 April: 90:36, 9.42 miles/15.16 km
    Avg pace: 9:37/mi; 5:58/km

Despite the rumours of snow, it was a glorious morning for running. Headed up the Royal Canal thinking I would cut over to the Park at Ashtown and loop back. But I was enjoying the canal so much that I ended up doing an out and back, going a bit beyond Ashtown and finishing back at Croke Park.

I'm a bit wary of the canal, because when it's quiet it's a bit lonesome, but today it was busy with walkers, cyclists, fishermen, families and it was really lovely. From inner city through post-industrial to bucolic countryside beyond Ashtown (I didn't go as far as the m50 crossing but I will one of these days), a lovely place to run -- and net downhill on the way home.

The pace was a bit fast for my LSR pace (was scolded for that when I got home) mainly because I did 3km at HMP in the second half.

Felt great all the way through this run, other than negotiating the Roscommon crowds on Clonliffe Rd, who seemed to very excited to be heading to the Division 2 final. :roll eyes:

Off to Croker now, bringing the boys to their first League Final... the 4 year old is beside himself with 'a-citement'. I'll probably spend most of the game bribing them to sit still! Wearing their Dubs gear of course... sigh.

O commemorate me where there is water,
    Canal water, preferably, so stilly
Greeny at the heart of summer.

Sounds like a great run! I'd say the giving out to you is more about worry that you're going to catch him one of these days ;)
    Enjoy the afternoon!

...yes, Cork scored a couple of good goals :p

boys were too busy eating junk and/or climbing all over the place/being restrained to notice much... they will not be going to any Champo games, that's for sure! :roll eyes:

and it was bloody freezing in Croker too!

I hope the boys enjoyed the Croker experience and the novelty of watching two teams making an effort to play football as opposed to some of the stuff Mammy or her kinfolk may have made them watch before :P

Session day again :). Murph decided he needed an easy run today so offered to pace me for this. We headed to the Polo grounds in the Park, great place for a session like this, all on grass, no excuses or interruptions. There were two other small groups doing intervals too and for the record both groups said hello!

Warmed up with a couple of km around the zoo. At this point, I was nattering on about following the 40 min pacers for the Terenure 5 mile with Murph urging caution.

Had the Garmin all set up for this workout (is it bad that I trust my Garmin more than my husband?), but this was the first time I had put paces in so it was beeping at me constantly... I tend to start each lap too fast (warning beep), then get into the right range (happy beep), then we would turn back into the wind and slow down (HTFU beep)... the only beeps I was happy to hear were the ones saying 5 minutes are up! I will be turning the beeps OFF from now on.

It was windy enough and wet, but nothing major. Each 5min interval felt long... my breathing was heavy but I didn't have to welcome any pain :), other than a bit of tension in my shoulders. And pretty much hit the pace throughout, except on the 3rd rep, where Murph was going too slow :p

Cooled down with another lap. By this time, I was re-thinking the wisdom of my Terenure strategy, the usual negative self-talk... I could never keep that pace up for a whole race. However, Murph reassured me that this session means that I should be doing sub-25 5k (Laura...are you listening? that goes for you too!).

As always, after these interval sessions, I feel GREAT now! So thankful to be able to do this.

    Laps: 4:56/7:57, 5:01/8:05, 5:07/8:15, 4:58/8:00

    5.6mi/9km in 51:26 (9:11/5:42 avg)

Super session Anna ! Your times are just coming crashing down. Are you planning a 5K/parkrun between now and Sportsworld ? Might give you a good indication of where you're at for the 5 miler ?

Collecting my Garmin tomorrow evening, so excited. Hope it has a HTFU beep too :D
