That is in no way all cut and dried, there are plenty of gay Muslims who have no problem whatsoever squaring their sexuality with their faith. I don't know enough about Islam to state the case but Imaan, the gay Muslim charity do an excellent job of putting it forward.

this is a fair point. it is indeed not all simple. however i didnt say i was speaking for islam, im just saying how i will vote based on my own personal relationship with my faith and how i understand it. good post.

    To believe yes.
But a person does not have the right to place those beliefs above the Civil Law - at least not without risking serious penalties.

We may have been using different definitions of the word 'right' there.

yes, but its a vote. no ? so im not imposing anything. im voteing. if it passes, it passes.

As an atheist and a gay man I would like to personally thank all those liberals and lefties who allowed people like the above poster into my country so I could be discriminated against now from as far as the third world. It will surely be a smack in the face for all you liberals when all the 'new' Irish come out to vote No. Once again thank you.
The liberal left deem it of vital importance to go after secular libertarians like Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Niall Ferguson, instead of Muslims who make David Quinn look like a third wave feminist queer theorist, and voting accordingly.

Meh, I happen to know a gay Muslim (yes they exist) voting yes. As a gay atheist i try avoid tarring an entire group of people with the same brush.

    But you are imposing.

It's like if all of those who are Roman Catholics voted to have it placed in the Constitution that Roman Catholicism was the only acceptable religion for Irish people and claimed this was their 'right' in keeping with their religious beliefs. That would be imposing on all citizens.

To say that some Irish citizens cannot be treated equally by the State because it not in keeping with the religious beliefs of other Irish citizens in to impose the rules of religions upon all - including those who are not members of that religion.

Absolutely it is your right to vote as your conscience demands but please be aware of the wider repercussions.

Still trying to stir it I see.

Guess what - There are Irish Muslims - imagine that!

Probably more Irish Muslims than neo-Con Gay Irishmen which, imho, is a good thing.

I'll leave the stirring to you.

But your statement speaks for itself.

Reminds me of the time Rosie O'Donnel said that the Christian Right was a bigger threat and Al Qaeda.

Honestly I don't, as in we shouldn't have to vote to end discrimination - it shouldn't exist in the first place and certainly not be enshrined in a Constitution.

I think in a Republic all citizens should have equal rights.

Unfortunately, the framers of the 1937 Constitution allowed Religious beliefs to impact on civil liberties and decided to privilege a majority which led inevitably to discrimination against a minority.

Yours is a minority faith in this country and an integeral part of your identity, as is my sexuality. I don't think that it would be too much of a stretch for you to put yourself in my position and imagine what it would be like if the whole country had a referendum to decide if you were allowed normal civic privileges based on this aspect of your identity. Imagine what it would be like to have another perdon's faith inflicted upon you; imagine what it would be like to have that inflicted on your children.
