Hi guys,

I am a serious on-line gamer. I use ISDN. A while back I posted a thread about this and got great feedback and help. So, I use a single line (64kb) and get ping rates at around 50-80 with a max of 20 players (can’t handle more through put without massive fluctuation).

I spoke to a mate of mine and he said that ISDN was better suited to on-line gaming as the through put of DSL did not prioritise ping and was developed for large volume package transfer. He has DSL.

Any thoughts on the matter?

It's called broadband for a start:D

It depends on which isp u get broadband off and more importantly whether or not tht isp has interleaving turned on or off.(Off low ping, on higher ping bout same as isdn). Eircoms standard 512k residential product has interleaving turned down but not off so u get a lowish ping. Unfortunatly esat use the sme lines as eircom so they have the exact same set up in that respect. Now I'm no expert on the matter but if u have broadband with interleaving turned off you'll ping about 20-30 always better than isdn

As far as I know a stable wireless connection will give you the best ping.

When my connect is at it's most stable and best - dos pings to Irish servers tend to be in the 9-19ms range. Latency with wireless is better afaik.

However interference can ruin all this.

esat bt business uses fastpath. This is another algorithm llike interleaving. However it has no or little undesired effects when all you want is a low ping, PL can be more of a problem however.

Only company to use this is Esat and only for their LLU business products afaik. Its fairly rare....hope to have it within a month tho

Get eircom radsl starter pack. I asked around and command pings are a stable 35-40 + it handles more bandwith than ISDN.

The only problem is the cap with supposedly 30mb an hour on CS then take into account map packs and updates etc. 4gb cap laughable even for gaming.

If its for gaming mostly id stick with isdn as you have no stupid cap.For large game patches updates you can download them overnight.
I ping all UK and EURO servers between 40-90 on 32 player Battlefield servers and between 50-120 on 64 player servers.
A few friends of mine i play Day of Defeat and Battlefield with online are on 512k ADSL and my pings match theirs with ease,of course they are with Eircom .
They cannot play as much as me as they are worried about this uter rubbish download cap.
Remember while ur playing ur using up part of your 4 GB cap
I would opt for ADSl but for this crazy cap which i already posted about.

It doesn't matter if your ping matches ASDL pings, bandwith always matters.

how much would you download in say an hour long game of cs? roughly. I thought the only thing the cap would stop people doing is downloading al day, now i'm worried:(

thanks for all the great feeback... kinda' confirms what I thought.

Re the point of band with, when playing on-line is not the most important - this in my experience becomes important above 20 players - in any game for that matter - if I play MOHAA or BF1942 above that it is just painful when all players timble within the same line of sight (i.e. it does not seem to transmit the movement information if the other player is not within "visual" contact - could be wrong but it seems that way).

The most important thing for me is that if I go in at a ping of 60 it does not fluctuates as the biggerst killer in in on-line gaming is sudden lag.

Sorry, I call it DSL as that's what it's called in Germany (which is available at €20 p/m for the last 4 years, may I add). I am out in the sticks and I am only just recovering from the party following the arrival of ISDN to our part of the bog .

So in essence I am not missing that much and everyone else has similar problems - and for all the wait it is not going to make too much of a difference from a purely gaming perspective.

Up until now I dial into Oceanfree with a single line and use the All Seeing Eye. This is the best I have had t odate - is this still the case or is there alternatives?

Your right, games only send you the information of the other players that are around your current position. To save on bandwidth, both for u and the server. You'd see this in player side demo's where u can float around. People appearing and disappearing all the time

More bandwidth means more data for your pc to use and usually means higher fps. (differs from game to game tho)

For gaming ISDN is your best bet unless u are on a LLU Esat exchange and are willing to pay the €110 a month fees

I use ASE too but i dial into netsource as my ISDN isp. Its a sub one tho. I never liked oceanfree tho havent used it in about a year.

I got the Eircom broadband a few weeks ago. It connect at the full 512kps. I play UT2003 with it, and there is ABSOLUTELY NO LAG whatsoever. It runs perfect. Chuffed.

Im sick and tired of seeing this type of uninformed rubbish on this board.

GAMING WILL NOT PUT YOU OVER YOUR CAP.

The amount of data downloaded while gaming is neglible when compared to downloading mp3s, video and software which is what REALLY bites into a cap.

I game online almost every night and i have had dsl for about a year and i have NOT ONCE exceeded the cap due to gaming.

Secondly, while the pings from Eircom dsl are indeed higher than isdn, if you want to play games like BF1942 then DSL is far more suitable. With 30-40 players on a server which pipe can handle more simultaneous data - the 64k one or the 256/512k one?

dcullys mates may be getting the same ping, but they are getting no choke and no packetloss, whereas on isdn these ARE problems.

Downloading mappacks arent a problem, as these weigh in about what, 300megs? and you only have to download them once. Unless of course these 'mappacks' are called The Matrix Reloaded and Doom III Alpha......

Hi guys,

I know this is not totally related to the thread but this point is kind of coming out of it.

I will stick with ISDN for now. However, what is the best ISP to use and what service offering if I want to reduce the flux/lag. I spoke to a telecom guy some time back (And although I didn’t quite understand the details) he said that using a public access line means that I may be sharing the back bone with allot more users then if I went for a subscription service – he also said that if I spend allot of time on the internet it could even be cheaper.

Some time ago he may have been right. Once you pay your sub you get a low call number. However with the introduction of FRIACO soon and UTVip/Netsource this is no longer the case.

UTV gives ****e pings but Netscource apparently gives decent ones.
Oceanfree and Indigo etc are apparently decent enough but i for one dont like em.

For online gaming Netsources RADSL is pretty hopeless ping wise actually. Anytime between 8am - 6pm is decent 40-70ms from Jolt and other UK servers. After 6pm consistant 250-300ms pings so dial up with your 56K modem from then on.

i was wondering is there any problem upgrading form isdn to broadband does the isdn have to be disconnected for ADSL to work and is netsource really that bad for online gamming

yes, I myself have also heard this. Truckle wanted to up to Netsource from ISDN, and he was told that an eircom engineer would first have to remove his ISDN

i know if you ask eircom for dsl they have to remove it for you when they come to install the dsl. not sure how this works with the other companies but im sure Eircom would charge u if u aint getting dsl from them. Dont think they are allowed too.

It is possible to get ADSL over ISDN tho... At least in a real country

Yeah, eircom do have a superb network. The best and most reliable games I've had in the past were with indigo 1891 number on Isdn. Just no lag to speak of, no spikes and low pings. netsource is such a disapointment
