Monday, 6th April 2015, Brian Boru 10 mile Raheny

    1:05:39
Disappointed with my time as the aim was to break 1:04 which is also the aim for the year. Things have been going well in training lately so I thought I'd do it. After a few miles things weren't looking good to go under 1:04 so the head dropped a bit and pace with it. My PB is 1:05:14 and i thought before the race (and still do now) that it'd be able to break that. A more positive attitude during races is definitely needed. I think next time I'll be a bit more conservative with my goals and push hard towards the end. Splits were (sorry I haven't figured out tables yet):

    Mile Pace Elev
    1 6:20/mi 13 ft
    2 6:17/mi 7 ft
    3 6:20/mi -36 ft
    4 6:45/mi 39 ft
    5 6:34/mi 5 ft
    6 6:39/mi -13 ft
    7 6:37/mi -28 ft
    8 7:03/mi 27 ft
    9 6:55/mi 13 ft
    10 6:21/mi -27 ft

Anyway, we live and learn. It's only April, I'll go under 1:04 before the year is out. Brilliant goody bag by the way! Loads of protein bars, gels, chocolate etc.

Provisional next race is the Samsung 10km in two weeks time, I'm going to talk to the coach in the club about that and see what he says.

I think I was running with you for the first 5-6 miles (Tallaght Singlet and Sun Glasses). I only put 2 and 2 together after the race.

FWIW I was gunning for the same time as yourself but got nowhere near it. Talking to people afterwards, no-one seemed to get what they were after. I have consoled myself by telling myself that the course was just not condusive to fast times.
Also a btw, I am pretty sure the garmin paces on miles 4 and 8 are way out, we were totally covered by trees in there and the paces went haywire, leaving the course farily short on my watch.

    Tuesday, 7th April
This was the day after the 10 mile race in Raheny, i ran 5 miles at 9:09 pace. I drove up to Bohernabreena reservoir and ran to the end of the top reservoir and back. I was crawling along for the first 2 miles, legs were in bits. First mile was in 9:50 and the second was 9:52 after that they freed up a lot and by the final mile I was relatively good. Normally would have taken at least a day off after a race but i think this run did me the world of good, really helped loosen out the legs. When i got back to the car a woman who also left her car at the gate had her car broke into and handbag stolen. Cars are always been broken into at places like these, i don't know why in the world someone would leave there handbag on display in a car.

    Wednesday, 8th April
Did 5 miles at 7:09 pace, far too fast. I parked at Cherryfield and ran for 2 miles along the Dodder up to Old Bawn. A new path went in there about 6 months ago which is great. My daughter came with me on her bike so I spent the 5 miles chasing/being chased by her hence the pace. I felt good but i should have taken it much slower. Bloody children. A lovely warm evening but I've never seen or swallowed so many midges in my life. I had to squint at times too to keep them out of my eyes, but still a few got through to blind me. I met the club's C25k gang who were out training before their 5km parkrun in Tymon tomorrow, best of luck to them.

    Thursday, 9th April
I felt good the previous day but i was knackered for this session. This was a 10 mile run with the club at 8:12. I ran down to the meeting point which was 4 miles return and then 6 with the club. I should of drove. Legs were still tired on Friday morning.

My toes are giving me problems. I was getting blisters there on a few long runs and now two of the toenails are going an unhealthy colour. Yuck. Not painful, I'll watch and wait. My shoes fit fine so I don't know what's causing it.

I was the same this week.
Recovery run on Tuesday then felt good on Wednesday but wrecked on Thursday!!

I must check out that new path. I have ran a good bit in Cherryfield but always had to cross over towards Tymon at the waterfall. Haven't been there in a while.

    Saturday, 11th April
Tymon parkrun in 19:06, third position.
I normally can't do parkruns as my wife is away on Saturdays and I'm taxi-ing the kids, but this morning the activities were off for Easter break and my sister in law was looking after the kids. After the race on Monday and a tiring run mid week this was not an ideal time to be doing another race. I didn't know what way to approach it, run it as a race or use it as a good tempo run. Thirty minutes before the start I decided to use it as a tempo run and do it in 20 mins. The first 100m or so is a relatively steep decline so i really got the momentum up at the start and kept going at the faster than planned pace. Happy with the time after the disappointment on Monday. I'll knock a lump off that time later in the year and with a bit of luck if I turn up on the right day I might win one.

Total mileage for the week: 40 miles

    Sunday, 12th April
Horrendous weather when we set out at 9:00, wet and windy. Instead of our usual reservoir run we headed for Marlay park to run along the paths protected from the wind. It was the worst wind and rain I've experienced in a long time. We did 13 miles at 8:30 pace. The paths were like streams. I had a great chat with my unnofficial coach about the training plan he has done for me, we talked about distances and pace and balancing the two to minimise the risk of injury. It's great to have someone who knows their stuff. My mileage for the week won't be increasing, it's currently around the 45 mile mark. Pace for the easy runs is to be increased a bit.

    Monday, 13th April
5 mile easy along the Dodder, 7:45 pace. At the far end the route is fairly exposed, tough enough going in the wind. Nothing exciting to report on this.

400m * 8 with the club. Splits below. Black very slightly uphill and into a wind, red is the return (obviously)
    1:28
    1:19
    1:24
    1:21
    1:24
    1:17
    1:25
    1:14

I haven't done 400's in a long time and I've no record to compare them to.

    Wednesday, 15th April
    9 miles at 7:58 pace

    Thursday, 16th April
Tempo run with the club. We're training in Tymon park a the minute so I've a bit of a longer run to get there. 13 miles done, 8 of which were at 7:30 pace

Rest day today (Friday) which is badly needed after a busy week. Sorry, a bit short and sweet today.

    Saturday, 18th April
Up bright and early this morning for a 20 min tempo run, i had to be back by 8:45 before the wife went off for the day. After a mile of a warmup i got stuck in and did just over 5km in the 20 minutes. Average pace of 6:23 min/miles which I was happy with considering it took in a bit of a hill. I followed up with another 3 very easy miles.

It's been a tough week with a fair step up in mileage. This has been due mainly to the return to the club's summer meeting point which adds in a good few extra miles. I did about 54 miles this week, first time to ever go over the 50 mile mark and I've been feeling it. I'm going to ease off a bit next week especially with the Samsung 10k coming up next Sunday.
