The thread title is self explanatory, but for those who weren't paying attention

Cover versions that, in your opinion, are better than the original recordings...

Could be blasphemy but I do like Jimmy Hendrix version of "All along the watchtower"

Also Nirvana "The man Who sold the World"

Placebo do a great version of "Running up That Hill"

Johnny Cash - Hurt.

Fully agreed on Nirvana's version of The Man Who Sold The World being better (even though I like the original too).
All Along The Watchtower - each is as good as the other in my opinion.

I personally prefers GnRs Knocking on Heavens Door, I appreciate Dylan quite a lot but GnRs is just electric.

I've always loved Bob Marley's music & reckon it's pretty rare that cover versions of his stuff can hold a candle to the original. However, Stiff Little Finger's version of "Johnny Was" turns a mournful ballad into a hard rocking cry of anger & make the song their own to such an extent that one could almost believe it was written about Belfast or Derry. It's hard to improve upon Marley's music but SLF managed it with this.
