I was recently on holidays in Spain and unfortunately had to bring my son to a private hospital, i produced the E1 11 form to be told that under the circumstances that the travel insurance i had would pre-vale. I then had to pay €300 to the hospital and was told to claim it back when I got home. In the end the child had gastroenteritis.

so my point is what can the E1 11 form/card do for u when away?

The E111 form has been replaced by the EHIC.
The EHIC can only be used in public health centres/hospitals. If you want to use private hospitals when on holiday then it is necessary to have travel insurance.

The card does not cover you in Private Hospitals only public hospitals. This is why you the travel insurance would have to be used (normally you pay, get a receipt and submit it to your travel insurance company for a refund).

If you ring your local HSE health centre (not Doctors Surgery) they should be able to tell you where to get the temporary certificate.
