ouch, i felt that fall... Ironically, I never fall when running (touch wood), but regularly when walking... and usually manage to rip tights/jeans/whatever to shreds, along with my dignity... right knee has permanent scab/scar tissue! :o

    Glad you are ok!

    Thursday 19 February
    10 x 1 min @ 5k off 2 min rec

AIS and Lunge Matrix pre run

A bit of a session tonight but nothing too taxing. Like barryoneill50 earlier today, I was left wanting more...
    Warmup 3 miles: 10:02, 9:26, 9:23
I think I might have passed a Boardsie on the warmup in Northwood. The one with the great calf muscles ;) wasn't too sure it was him until it was too late. Belated hello if so! Next time let's chat! I'm still probably too slow to run with you:(
Reps were grand. My pacing according to the watch (checked afterwards) was a bit all over the place but in reality it all felt very evenly paced and controlled.
    7:37, 7:42, 7:26, 7:30, 7:28, 7:26, 7:43, 7:52, 7:49, 7:32
My shoulder had been hurting me all day from the fall on Tuesday but didn't bother me at all on the run so was delighted about that and legs & co felt super so no residual issues there. Yay!!!!
2 miles cool down and home to do the myrtl. Still can't kneel down with the sore knees:( so could only do the standing myrtle and side-lying exercises.
    8 miles total
Might have to take the day off tomorrow:eek::(

What an incredible log and journey. Your persistence and schedule alone are really fantastic.

Well done on all you have achieved so far and I wish you every success with your 2015 goals, am looking forward to actually being able to track in real-time :D

Am a s*it sleeper too. Tried all the Valerian tea (stains teeth badly so rinse with water afterwards) and tablets. Melissa recommended too. B12 recommended too so maybe worth a try. A bath is generally great but again not always works and then the disappointment when it doesn't is frustrating to say the least.
Try a relaxation app before bed and I think it was mentioned already, but pen and paper beside bed and write down concerns/worries.
If all else fails then nurofen plus. Not recommended by pharmacies for this purpose as you can imagine. Banana snack in the middle of the night too can help.

Can't believe you actually read the whole thing in the end! I thought you were joking! You deserve a medal for that! There's some crazy sh1t in there. Sometimes I say too much:o Thanks for your kind words though:)

Regarding the sleeping stuff, yeah I've tried most of those remedies. The problem with the pen and paper beside bed is that I have no real worries or concerns to write about:) I could write about how happy I am I guess:):)
    I just can't sleep!
I do take B12 sometimes as I'm vegetarian and it can sometimes get a bit low. I've gone down the neurofen plus road a few times too to be honest and it is genuinely the only thing that helps a bit (not always though!)
Thanks again! Must look up that app thing!

    Friday 20 February
Rest or R&R of one kind or another!

    Saturday 21 February
    am: 4 miles recovery

    AIS pre run
Not naming any names but someone might have been mixing her grapes last night:o. Wasn't feeling so hot this morning. Oh dear, stomach very very dodgy on this run. I never normally suffer from sick stomachs like this.
Had to get the car and this was a mainly downhill jog so didn't think it'd do me any harm but I did have to tread very carefully as things were a bit touch and go for while but I got there in one piece!
    10:25 avg pace

    pm: 5 miles easy
    AIS pre run
Went to bed for the afternoon and when I woke up I felt a lot better. Tore off way too fast for the first mile at under 9 min pace as I was so cold but gradually warmed up so slowed it down. Enjoyable little run under the guidance of a stunningly beautiful half moon and accompanying stars. A poignant moment when I happened to glance at the watch 3.11 miles into the run and it was under 30 mins. Brought me back exactly 3 years ago when I did my first proper race, proper as in going for an actual time. Operation Transformation 5k 3 years ago when I was trying to get under 30 mins. Didn't happen that day:(. Took another month to get there. Great to think that the pace I did during that race is now my easy/recovery pace.
No more drink now for a while...how long is a while....?
    Shoulder back to normal btw!

    Sunday 21 February
    90 mins w/2 x 14 mins @ AT (1 hr race pace) off 5 mins rec (last 3 mins 10k down to 3k effort)

AIS & Lunge Matrix pre run

    Reps
    14 mins: 8:05, 8:04 (pace)
    5 mins rec @ 10:20
    11 mins: 8:12, 7:53 (pace)
    1 min @ 7:51, 1 min @ 7:41, 1 min @ 7:26

Pumped after this. Really happy with how it went. A great sleep last night undoubtedly helped how this went. First rep went great. Second rep I got a stitch in the usual place. I had played around with my psoas earlier this morning but not sure what I found was really it and if it was, not sure I released it as such. I might try find a physio who can help me locate it so I can do this release myself properly in the future. Anyways, the stitch did slow me down a bit but I managed to keep it under control and it eventually went away but did affect the pace. I tried to remain calm and not let it bother me too much unlike in the race where I panicked and lost the plot!

Passed the same car 3 times during this run with a couple canoodling and not really doing much to hide the fact! Now the Phoenix Park is made for this kind of "stuff" if one is so inclined. There are literally hundreds of good options of hidden away spots to park up and do your thing but yet they chose a very exposed area with people passing by regularly. I certainly saw more than I bargained for! Unless they wanted to be seen! A bit early in the day for a dogging session! Each to their own I guess...

Once I got to 11 mins on the 2nd rep I stepped up the effort a bit more for each of the last 3 mins finishing up at 7:26 pace for the last minute. Once I had the session finished I started feeling a bit sick so whatever was up with me yesterday still hasn't left me 100% I guess. I took it fairly handy back to the car.

    10 miles total
53 miles weekly total (missed a day)
Not a bad week with a little bit of speed work and no gluteal issues from the hill reps and only scrapes and bruises left from the fall. It has made me much more aware of being lighter on my feet in general when running, no matter the effort.
Can't wait to get stuck in to next week! Is it Monday yet?

    6 miles recovery

    AIS, Lunge Matrix pre run

Next to no sleep Sunday night and had a horrific headache Monday afternoon after a 'triumphant' morning so went to bed for a few hours. A bit better when I work up. Probably shouldn't have run today, but I wouldn't be me if I didn't run, so I did, 'cause I am, so there you go.

Loved this! It really is my favourite session of all. It's hard work and you get to run really fast for short periods but the recoveries are quick to come. I won't bother relaying all the 40 sec reps but they were all in the 6:40s and 50s with just one above 7min pace. After the last recovery I had the 2 mins to do but I forgot what effort/pace it was supposed to be at so I just ran it hard and it came in at 6:57 pace. I realise now it was supposed to be a lot slower than that. Oh well... but it felt good! After the 18 reps and the 2 mins fast I thought I'd feel shagged but I didn't, I felt wonderful and my legs felt really springy, so after a few mins recovery jog I ran a few more easy cool down miles.

Running just gets better and better. It an activity that just keeps on giving, day after day, month after month, year.... Very few things in life like that!

Hey R. I know I probably run most of the reps too fast. It's a hard one to judge on such short reps. I just imagine I'm racing a mile and run to that effort. Reps each week can vary anything from 6:30s to 7:10s (doing them by feel). My real mile pace would be something in the 6:50s I'd imagine.

    5 miles recovery

Easy one to get the car. Breathing a bit laboured to start but was fine after a bit but I was glad I didn't have a session tonight as was definitely quite tired and quads a little tender from previous day's efforts.

    Thursday 26 February
    5 x 5 mins @ 5mile effort off 3 min jog

    AIS, LM pre run

I was a bit anxious about this one beforehand but it worked out fine. 2 mile warm up and then into the session. I had a bit of a ditsy blonde moment and couldn't for the life of me remember whether I was to do 4 x 5 mins or 5x 5 mins or 5 x 4mins. I decided to do 4 x 5 mins and if I was feeling ok after 4 I'd do a fifth rep which was what I did.
    Reps were:
    7:57
    7:46
    7:57
    7:53
    7:44
Got a horrific stitch on the 3rd one and had to stop as the pain was so bad. I was 4min 36secs into the rep so not too much disruption to the session. I had to walk for about a minute of the recovery to help the stitch ease and it took the rest of the recovery at a very slow jog to ease it whilst practicing very forceful exaggerated breathing. Stitch was at the right hand side under ribcage which is strange as I always get them on the left side. Anyways that's one for the Stitch Diary!
Stitch left me completely early the 4th rep and enjoyed the rest of the session but the last rep had some downhill - hence the faster pace.
I must say I felt very happy running at this effort tonight and except for the stitch disruption, I felt very strong and relaxed and the recoveries were ample and I could have done another couple of reps if required.

I would go to see a really good physiotherapist/physical therapist about your stitch. The former Ar/ist known as claralara got them regularly for a while and ciaran fitz in Ballinteer sorted it out.
I think it was a trapped muscle under the ribcage (possibly caused by corework?), there might be something about it in her old log i think...

Looked up his website and looks good. Thanks! Could be a tight or trapped muscle alright. Tried some release techniques myself but wasn't sure what I was at so definitely would be good to see someone like that.
Thanks again. Must search CL's log to read about her issues.

Wow! Really wasn't feeling it tonight! I was crawling along and just felt wrecked! I guess the session the previous day took a little more out of me that I thought it did. It was pointless going any further so stopped at 5. Legs felt great after it though so definitely some benefit as I was very lazy in work and sat on my bum spending too much time on Boards for most of it so was a little stiff in the arse and legs but everything loosened up nicely as the run went on. Happy to keep it super slow and recovery effort worked it's magic on the body as per usual.

Stomach was sick this morning. Actually come to think of it it's been sick the last few mornings:eek:. Not what you're thinking. At least I hope it's not. I don't the world is quite ready for that yet, let alone me!:)
Headed out to do my long run with tempo but after the progressive warm up and strides of varying efforts (new warm-up strategy to hopefully combat stitches) and the first mile of the tempo I just wasn't feeling it. Stomach feeling bad and was way too hot. Took a while to figure out whether it was just a case of htfu or some kind of bug. I think it's a touch of the latter so called it a day after a short cool down.

    Monday 2nd March
    8.5 miles various

Took Sunday off as I wasn't feeling great with nausea.

Monday I woke up feeling fine but the sickness from the previous few days and a slight headache returned on the drive from Kilkenny to Dublin. I was a bit lethargic and feeling a bit pukey on the drive and missed my turn on the M50 for the Phoenix Park which should have been signal from the gods that I shouldn't have run today but no, me being me came off the next exit and backtracked towards PP and soldiered on. Felt ok on the warm up (or so I kept telling myself) but just not quite right if I'm being honest. Great weather for this. Lashed on the head with driving hail followed by sleety snow. Beautiful winter wonderland sites to behold. Did 4 miles warm up and then into the 60 min tempo. I just didn't feel right from the off. It was taking more effort than it should. I was feeling a bit odd and very hot and cold and stomach was in bits. Called it a day after 4 tempo miles (avg pace 8:35) and a short cool down. Recouped on couch for the night and didn't eat anything for the rest of the day :(

Loved this. Really did. Legs were on fire this evening and I felt really well for the first time in a good few days. 3 mile progressive warmup with the 3rd mile including some very short strides. Chose a hill in the Phonenix Park which was perfect and just focused on form and staying relaxed with quick light feet. The recoveries felt ridiculously long and I was raring to go for the next one each time.
Felt great on the cool down and had to hold the legs back from taking off. I think the really slow jog this morning was a great idea and I might try and do this the morning of my sessions from now on days when I'm off work.

    Saturday 7 March

    AIS pre run
.5 mile warm up and then Poppintree Parkrun pacing my sister to around 32 mins. This was just to see where she's currently at really. She's just recently getting back into her running and we've decided to do a Parkrun each month with me pacing her to do a little bit better each month. We started running around the same time a few years ago and we were similar level until about a year ago when she fell in love and suddenly her running didn't matter to her anymore :(
I've never paced anyone before and it's very hard to know how much/little verbal encouragement to give during the race.
We planned about 10:18 pace for the first mile and take it from there. She shot off like a hare starting out and I had to reel her back in and tell her to slow down as we really didn't know how things would pan out. She hasn't done a race in a year or more so best play it safe for this one. The pain started for her and those around her around the end of mile 1. It was palpable... Mile 1: 10:15. All these people really suffering so early on in the race who had gone out too fast. Not nice to be in the middle of really:( She got a stitch and started feeling sick during mile 2. Lots of people starting to walk. Her breathing was very laboured at this point so I told her to slow down a tiny bit and gain control over it. She had to slow down a lot. Mile 2: 10:43. She was dying... More people starting to walk. The sounds of the gasping coming out of some people was quite concerning! Towards the end of Mile 3 she picked it up a bit but went out too hard too soon and had to slow down again. She put in a good spurt with 100m to go but went the wrong way and missed the finish section to the right and had to backtrack so lost a precious few seconds. Finish time 32:25
Anyways, she learned her lesson today. You get out what you put in. Well in most cases ;) She also didn't walk at all so that's very encouraging. She's a very stubborn person and that's a fine trait to have in the racing game!
I suspect she might be getting the fire in her belly to start taking it seriously again which I will be strongly encouraging obviously!
Btw, just to note, I was very nervous on the startline even though I was only jogging
    .... :o

    Saturday pm
    5 x 2 mins @ 5k w/3min rec

Had a bit of a snooze around lunchtime and then headed to Phoneix Park in afternoon. 15 degrees! Shoulda worn my shorts and woulda except for the fact that I only apply tan from knee to ankle in the winter so woulda looked a tad strange! I think it's time to extend application!
This moderate session didn't pose too much of a problem at all but I did run some of the reps too fast (done by feel). There's no way my 5k pace is in the 7:30s but it felt like an honest effort today. It was probably due to the very easy day yesterday as the legs felt very fresh and the run this morning put an extra spring in my step I think. Plus I had a little wind assistance for some of this.
    Paces for the reps were: 7:43, 7:33, 7:34, 7:41, 7:41

    Interesting.
I did 30 minute pacer yesterday in a Dublin parkrun and I was very surprised at the lack of heavy breathing of people. Most were talking away until 3/4km but started dropping off at the first sign of discomfort/heavy breathing.
Normally at faster paces, people are breathing much heavier right from the start but often hold to the pace or even speed up. Even at the HM today people who seemed to be breathing really heavily ended up finishing ahead of me :o

They mentioned there were a lot of newcomers so I'd say a lot were racing for the first time and just went off way too fast for the first mile.

Crazy crazy wind so wasn't sure how this was gonna go and had a B plan in place if it wasn't possible to do this today.
As I'm a day or two behind where I need to be on the plan (I hate not being on the right day!!! OCD much?) I decided to do a shorter run than the designated 90 mins today so I'll be fresh enough to do sessions on Wed and Fri and get back to doing my long run on Sundays without wearing myself out.
So did a short 2 miles warm up and straight into the session instead of the 4 mile warm up I'd normally do. It was impossible to do any kind of controlled progressive warm up due to the wind.

Delighted with how this went in the end.

    First 15 mins:
8:00, 7:55 (pace) Felt good. Very strong and felt form was good and generally a very controlled run. All done by feel.
Then 5 mins recovery at 10:50
    12 mins:
8:04, 8:19 (was able to maintain a good effort until about 10 mins into this but I had to turn a corner then into a stiff wind and lost momentum and form faltered and it shows in the pace over the last 2 mins)
    3 mins:
    7:52 (1 min), 8 (1 min), 7:14 (1 min) pace
Was happy to really push it for the last minute even though I was wrecked and I did feel a little pukey when I stopped but I think that's a good sign as it shows I genuinely pushed hard on tired legs and lungs.
A good day at the office on the road.
    7.5 miles total @ 9 pace
    Myrtl post run

Have decided to bin the idea of a spring half marathon. I need and want to keep plugging away at the shorter distances and make some more decent inroads with the speed side of things first. Obviously my biggest weakness likes there. Endurance has always been my forte.
It's funny but my outlook towards what I want has changed a lot over the last year or so. All I cared about before was the prospect of jogging marathons and half marathons whereas now I'd be much prouder of myself doing a decent 5k and 10k this year more than anything else.
I will however still do an autumn half when I've gained some more "speed".
I'll still plan on doing DCM 2016 but if I don't feel I'm ready by then then so be it...
