Fellaini no good against the better teams except when he's United's best player against them

the better teams Chelsea and city.

    Drew 1-1 with Chelsea

    well done fellaini

Young wouldn't be my preferred option as a left winger but bar Di Maria he's the only one who can play the role to a decent standard atm. Threre's a good chance LVG will just drop both Herrera and Fellaini at the weekend again so no point talking about balance if that's what's going to happen

It's ridiculous. Fellaini has been in our top three players this years, second in my honest opinion, and yet he still gets no credit from some.
When he was at Everton, he terrified me. You never knew what he was going to do around the opposition box.

If olaying Fellaini up to gets up CL football, and it comes at the expense of of more established striker, then so be it. Fellaini gave us more up front last night than any of our strikers have in the majority of their games.

call a spade a spade, he is at a certain level. against the likes of city or Chelsea the level we should be at he will be at nothing. Even last year in the champions league, any decent side we played fellaini was so out of place, teams just passed the ball around him and he didn't have the ability or mobility to cope

he destroyed us playing for Everton the last time we won the league tbf

100% agree, we couldn't handle him, he must have taken at least 6 or 7 balls down on his chest in that game alone. However, that doesn't mean he is of the required standard to play for utd does it? Peter Crouch has destroyed our defenders some games as well, that mean he should be able to play for united?

yes he is a decent plan B, but our plan B is turning more and more into our plan A and its not good to look at lets be honest about it.

My opinion on both Young and Fellaini has changed hugely this year. Both look very good in comparison to last season and both are great players to have in the squad.

If we really want to be at the latter stages of the champions league/premier league then both of them probably are, at best, squad players. However this season for what we need, both are more than adequate.

Falcao getting hammered again today by the press. He was by no means great last night but playing the lone striker and getting poor service will do that.

If UTD want to keep Falcao hopefully they will use the loss of form due to an old injury line and point to this season to get his price tag and wages down.

Its funny the free ride ADM is getting though. Arguably much worse and getting a free ride from the press. Ozil got hammered for a poor first season too.

have a feeling this will happen with Herrera and rvp will take his place with rooney dropping back to midfield

On a serious note I got a bit hammered last night and think ive lost my car keys

Champions league knockouts starting this evening and even though we arent in it I still love this stage of the competition and hopefully we are back in it next season.

Our run in though looks like one of the toughest from the competing pack though but everyone has european football bar Southampton.

Hi lads, long time lurker, first time poster, so be gentle with me.

United last night looked far more comfortable once falcao was taken off. Also di Maria I felt was better when he played on the right and cut back inwards with runs, Valencia then overlapping, the same with young and shaw on the left. First half was a dire performance. Falcao didn't seven look interested in the game in the first half

Had a big post written, think I deleted it by accident, can't see it here.

    The TLDR cause I'm lazy

Herrera shaky first half, possibly pressure with his ommisions and Van Gaal calls for new CM. Did well second half. Had am immense little fake turn that threw two players past him, gif please.

Fellaini can take **** from other fans, should be adored by us. The site of him taking a ball down on his chest, in the box, while being harassed, is a beautiful thing. I still want him in CM, but this auxiliary role is fine by me. Nothing wrong with forcing the issue every now and then.

Di Maria back in proper position along with Rooney. Obviously wasn't amazing since both have been moved around, if Van Gaal can settle them both where they played, will be better. Signs last night of Rooney moving opposing back four, running behind, Angel running from deep. Better.

I'm drawing a line under Falcao. His ball control is terrible, appears to have no acceleration and no pace. Torres syndrome here for me, serious injury recoup holding back his trademark burst of the mark. Unless he is being offered for pennies, I'd be saying no thanks and looking at Cavani, Dybala or Vietto. His omission for the first half of season with injury isn't an excuse, but a point to argue why to not sign permanently. Unfortunately the bafoons at Moncao and Columbia have arguably ruined one of the best strikers in world football. Or even don't buy a new striker, Rooney, RVP and Wilson should be good enough for what we want to achieve. A new big name might be excessive, ( unless Van Persie is unable to regain some shape or his past form)

Becoming a bit "meh" over Luke Shaw. Not going to make any sweeping, or pre-judging comments on a 20 yeard old. But considering the absolute buckets of jip people were having about him, I'm less then impressed for €30m, but willing to provide the benefit of the doubt longterm.

This Rooney playing midfield business is killing us. Let's hope LVG makes the right call and drops at least one of RVP, Falcao or Rooney. We know its not going to be Rooney, and he has a lot of faith in RVP so it really points to Falcao losing out.

Im sure Falcao would be effective if LVG built the attack around him but we know that's not going to happen.

I wouldn't mind seeing this formation

    170215134344.png

I would prefer Herrera to Mata because of the added physicality and work rate.
Rafael or McNair might be a better option in place of Valencia
Young might also be a better option than Shaw at the moment too, but Shaw really needs a run in the team to build up some understanding with Di Maria.
Jones possibly for Smalling too but I picked Smalling for the added height considering our defenders are quite short.

In terms of midfield, that is the midfield that wasn't working in the first half, in that formation from what I can tell.

EDIT: For what it is worth, it is the formation (and positioning of Di Maria and Herrera) that I have been arguing for all season, but maybe it isn't a style that will work. Looked good going forward earlier in the season the few times it was tried - I think with Rooney in the 10 role and Falcao partnering RVP.

I didn't think we were as bad in the first half as people made out. We had good possession but lacked penetration and running off the ball up front. When Falcao went off Rooney stayed forward a lot more and was making the runs which Herrera, Di MAria and to a lesser extent, Blind were looking for.

Maybe moving Di Maria to the right and letting him cut in more also helped add penetration through the middle.

I'd like to see that team given another shot. FA cup matches are a very difficult barometer to judge a formation that has really only been tried once.

yea probably will even though he hasn't even won a player of the month award yet..

    I'd like the following tried

    De Gea

    Rafael---Jones---Rojo---Shaw

    Blind
    Fellaini

    Herrea
    Mata
    Di Maria

    Rooney

I think this gets all our best passing players on the pitch and gives us good balance have Fellaini strenght and height in.

Obviously Herrea is untried here and might lack a bit of pace but at least Rafael would give he good option on the overlap unlike Toni Passback. And as LVG is meant to like we have players on the pitch can can cover a number of positions.
RVP and Falcao can battle it out for a place on the bench.

Unlikely. It would make too much sense.

This is the obvious choice in my opinion. Stop messing with 3-5-2 and narrow diamonds because it doesn't suit the players, and play the players in their best positions. If you were chasing a game, Fellaini on up top would be on option too.
