I'm reading contradictory information about link building and was hoping to get a bit of clarity on it.
Is it still a good idea to try and have a link to your website on someone else's website? Surely if this helps the user and it comes from a relevant authoritative site, search engines should see it as a benefit?
Or does it effect the authoritative site negatively?

Small numbers of natural links will still provide some SEO juice however, linking is not as high up the list as it once was.

If you are looking to gain some authority by having your link placed on another site then the best you can do is to have your link anchor text be targeted to keywords you are trying to rank for, used naturally in the main content of the page that contains the link and not surrounded by other links.

Content is king and so creating engaging and useful content combined with off site optimization (social shares, likes, etc) will provide a better ROI.

Hi cue. Decent content that adds value to the user experience along with some quality links is all you need. You might not need that many links either but it depends on the market you are playing in and how competitive it is.

Links within content on another relevant websites are still very valuable. Don't bother too much with comment links as have lost most of their power... An important thing to note when building links is you link anchor text. Use something like ahrefs to check percentages.

It is always better to earn links with good content but at times you have to go looking for them. Do some background investigation on the sites (their link profiles etc..) you want links from before you make a move.

    cheers
