The general thought is that it was simply to get rid of the release clause. Strikes me most think he'll still move sooner rather than later, but now they can get more than the 24m or so being discussed.

Not unusual. Dortmund had a big hand in developing him into the player he is now.

I'd imagine there has been an agreement for him to sign a new contract to remove the clause...and the club will allow him leave in the summer but recoup proper value.

Don't forget he probably got a fat signing on bonus for for this.

Paddy McNair has signed a new contract at #mufc until June 2017 with the option of a further year.

If we did sign him LVG would probably put him in left back.

Two years. Interesting, is this the club learning? Cleverley was handed four years back in 2011 iirc.

Speaking of the devil, I saw the Villa fans reaction to him been taken off at weekend.

Van gaal just passed this out to journalists at his presser

    B9fB1epIAAACuXI.jpg

Indicating the stats are skewered due to the amount of cross field balls united play, that count as "long". Seemingly appreciated Allardyce was being tongue in cheek, but a bit grumped at the amount of articles this week saying United are a long ball team.

It is embarrassing. Our dutch 'fhacts'.

Someone tweeted the other day that Opta have two long ball stats. We are top or near top in one of them (overall long balls) but when it is restricted to long passes actually to someone (and not a hoof) we are amongst the best in the league.

So we do play direct/long - but it is seemingly aimed at a specific player rather than a lump more than most.

I do FEEL like they are aimless hoofs most of the time though.

Bit precious of him to be honest.

And stats are stats. There are multiple long ball tables and stats. To be honest I dont personally care all that much.

But a long ball in most tables constitutes a player striking the ball over 25 meteres. This includes defensive clearances, goalkeeper kickouts and clearances etc.

He has a point in that we frequently play crossfield passes that are over 25 meters, but not directed at the striker.

I'd prefer a pamphlet passed out explaining why Rooney is in midfield.

Looks like Louis is really starting to feel the pressure. Why do something like this and just prolong the debate and jibes? Surely with a midweek game he can just let that take the focus off things.

Seen a tweet saying everyone is talking about Van Gaal and not a ****e performance. Job Done.

All the tweets are about how LVG is a stickler for this kind of stuff and is not afraid to call anyone out, no matter how petty it is.

    And this is petty.

Take Rooney out of midfield and your % of long balls will drop. Stick him up top and your goals ratio will improve too. How can he not see this is baffling.

He's just teshting us fans. Deliberately hamstringing the team to see who will keep the faith. As we approach the end of the season he'll put out a proper lineup, go on a 12 straight victory run, finish in second on 82 points, and invite all those who be21ve to the after party at his placshe where he will unveil his plans for dominance next year.

Most important thing from that press conference:

"Van Gaal on MUTV says United can beat Burnley with "high ball speed". MUTV quickly clarify to say he's talking about moving ball quicker."

That's been a killer all season for us. Constant slowing down in possession and letting the other team get their shape and defend. It's so frustrating when we go forward with 4 vs. 5 in attack and then we turn around and play it back to the center backs to pass over and back between each other for 5 mins. It's fine doing it when their set and we're going down a blind alley on one side of the field but doing it when it looks as if a break is on is frustrating.

"High speed ball" Thought he was bringing in some dodge ball tactics there for a second :D

Only Burnley and FC Mets have played more long balls than United in Europes top 5 leagues apparently

Excuses from Van Gaal aren't good enough, it's his team selections that are making us bypass the midfield and his tactics that make us look so blunt, crossing the ball constantly

Will he show us a team of Bangkok and dossers involved in team training?

I think you've hit the nail on the head. Numerous times this has stood out to me. United have been reasonably solid in defense, all things considered, not conceding many goals, dominating possession.

Yet every time there's a decent attack on, it breaks down as you described. Heart in mouth as it looks like a typically lethal United counterattack until about 25 yards from the opposition goal, then someone will fail to start a one-two or launch a through-ball, and instead run into a defender, turn and knock it backwards. Advantage lost.

It's tremendously frustrating because if even half of these resulted in a shot, United would probably have a handful more points on the board.

forgot about him, but if you had gerrard or ward prowse taking corners for Chelsea id would say they would have an even higher goal return....

Terry, Ivanovic, Cahill, Zouma, Matic, Drogba, Costa all 6 foot plus and attack the ball with serious power

Imagine if you had all of them in your sunday league team, you'd have taken 10/10 good corners instead of 9/10

Starting to sound like the beginning of the end for LVG, reminds me of Rafa's rant. Seems the pressure is really starting to tell. We are arguably playing worse football than last season.

I don't think he's in any trouble as long as United are in the top four. Drop out of there and things could turn nasty. (Which could happen by tomorrow night)

The last time we let in more than one goal in a game was against West Brom in October.

I know we could be playing a lot better but that isn't bad going at all.
