    Hello folks.

OK, so the Photo Book didn't get sorted last year, so I said I'd help out.

So lets get the ball rolling.

We need submissions, yea? We also need to get the thing printed - that's quite easy, just a matter of getting it at a decent price that's the stickler. We'll probably want a panel of people to go through the submissions and pick the cream of the crop I suppose, yea? I know almost nothing about photography, but I know what I like, the Boards Photo Book has never disappointed me with the quality and "wow" factor of images, but I'd rather have at least 2 pairs of expert eyes help out if possible :)

    Am I missing anything obvious?

Hi Dav, great to see this kicked off!

In previous years we have never filtered the images, everyone who wished to take part was included in the book - I think that was a huge part of its success, that it was a community project and everyone is welcome to be a part of it.

Oh right! I always thought they were picked from submissions, show's you what I know :) Well then that makes the process a bit easier, then it'll be down to getting a good layout.

    Yep :)

One photo per page was always good - nice to give each photo some space.

I think someone did float the idea of a calendar but I love the book.. that's just me! Open to suggestions though.

The only condition was that each person that submits a photo must buy a copy.

There is no screening*, the output shows the diversity of this community from all levels.

*In one of the early editions there was a submitted image which was considered to be not appropriate for a publication supporting a children's charity. The author agreed to change the image.

I would love to get involved in this at any level, so if you need any help, please do let me know.

As Shakespeare Printers are no longer operating, does anyone have any experience with a printer for photobooks that they can recommend? (Besides Blurb/Photobox etc).

    Mod:
A calendar is a separate project idea. If people think that it might be a runner and want to trash out ideas then I'm going to start a new thread but for now lets get back to the book.
Some posts have been moved into the new thread.

I'm definitely in! Also, a book is far better than a calendar, though I'd support both together :)

I believe their should be some screening of submissions to ensure that images are appropriate for the intended audience, though generally most people are grown up about this.

I'll certainly be exercising veto powers on anything I don't think appropriate, but as was done before, I'd rather go back to the person who submitted and ask for another and not cast them out like some sort of pariah :D

Yep, that's what we did in cases before - even if in some cases 2 people submitted very similar photos. We gave the option to the second person to change their image.

Dav - Ceacg did some work on this last year rounding up quotes and prices for printers, so I'm just looking at those at the moment. If you have any other ideas for printers can you send them on to me? Or do you want to look into that - happy for you to do it if you wish :)

Not to keen on the Veto thing tbh. It's an Arts forum, isn't it?

Would a charity want to be associated with a publication which contained gross or indecent images?

I think by Veto they just mean things like that, rather than 'Hey, that image is crap, it's not going into this book...'

I don't think I've ever seen gross or indecent images on Boards.

Declaring an image to be **CRAP** would be a questionably subjective (well, unless it's HDR - just kidding - not really!) but overtly sexual content for a charity book focused on the betterment of children would certainly be misaligned with the intent.

Yep, quality is not a deciding factor in the images. A photographer can put forward any picture they want irrespective of quality. I've not yet put forward a photograph because it's had some minor acclaim, I've put forward photographs that I personally love.

(Edit: Sorry mystic86, I misread your post and have just changed my post here to support rather than contradict you. I blame rum for my inadequacies. I may not have been drinking at the time but I still blame rum. )

Surprisingly Boardsphotobook@gmail.com was available to create!

If whoever is collecting the photos needs an email account for it I can hand it over :)

I really should do some work :p

The image I referred to before was a good image but was quite dark and sexually provocative. It wasn't my call at the time but the team who did that book felt it was a grey area and handled it very well. The person who submitted the image admitted they did not think of the link to Santa Strike Force at the time. Another very good image was then substituted and all was well.

For so many books being published now and the variety of the authors it shows that those who get involved do not need rules to limit their submissions as long as we reserve the right of a final review.

Ok so we have a potential printer and all looks good.. so next step is we need someone with the experience and software necessary to help us design the book.

Adobe InDesign or something similar would be best.. any offers of help?

Would a help request in the appropriate area of the Tech Forum help ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,047 ✭✭✭CabanSail

If there is nobody local I could probably do the layout with InDesign CC

    :D

That could work! The print company have come back to say that they may be able to assist us.. so that might be an option but I'm just concerned it will impact price, need to go back and confirm that.

So.. all systems are ready to ramp up. I'll open a new thread for sign-up once I've finalised costs/details and we can get the ball rolling - here's to the 2015 book!

I think we should keep it as the 2014 (belated) book and hopefully get it back on track again later in the year for the 2015 edition.
