If snow is forecast, why the hell can't airports salt/prepare the runway and clear the snow and ice in advance?

How do you clear snow and ice before it falls/forms?

They spray runways in advance but if the rate of snow fall is huge it "sticks" you can't clear a snow properly till its deep enough. Runways are grooved and have cambers to aid water removal but if the rain fall is heavy enough it can overwhelm even that.

In advance of it snowing? Snow accumulates as it falls.

I've seen it accumulate on an aircraft on a short turn around even though the aircraft was fully de-iced earlier in the day. Necessitating another application of fluid.

Can you not grit the runway as the snow starts to fall? Much in the same way you can grit a road?

What about underfloor heating for the runways........that'll sort the ice and snow fairly quickly.

Grit or rock salt is only useful to prevent frost and ice from forming. It is ineffective to prevent falling snow from accumulating.

A runway can be sprayed with anti icing fluid but it can effect breaking action.

Some Strategic Air Command bases had those, along with heated taxiways ( just as important ). I think Pease AFB was one.

It would have been fairly fatal to a career if the BUFFs couldn't respond to an incoming Russkie attack because the runway was iced-up...!

Edit: other candidates are Loring and Offut AFB.

Allegedly also Sculthorpe and Brize Norton in UK, decommissioned upon return to HMG.

Do you know how much that costs to install, operate and maintain ?

The last significant snowfall in Dublin that fell was 4 years ago. How often does snow fall that needs clearing ? How often does Glasgow get snow. It is far far cheaper to spray the runway.

I have only heard of heated runways at commercial airports in the Nordic countries even there I'm sure they prefer ploughing

Last night was fine for Glasgow, max 1 hour delay for passengers, not like those passengers diverted to other Airports a couple of weeks ago when Glasgow was again affected by snow

Manchester & East Midlands looked like they were closed today for a bit as well

Out of interest and nosiness, anyone know why this mornings Cityjet from Dublin to LCY diverted to Stansted? Sat in a hold for a while and off it diverted.

It came back from Stansted to Dublin late afternoon.

Almost an exact 'snap'; same airline, type, track, altitude... and 1 knot difference in speed!

BAW179 and 239 over NI now

Look every night between 6-9pm and it will be flying. It may either be an ABX air or a Star Air.

Why don't you ring up the airport and tell them they are doing it wrong ?

How do you think a jet engine or otherwise would react to sucking up mass amounts of grit ? how would the undercarriage and brakes get on getting gunked up with that stuff ?

The airport uses a combination of snow equipment and potassium acetate to keep taxiways and runways clear of snow and ice. That is one of the few approved methods, airports have to meet international IATA and ICAO standards in their winter ops plan for snow and ice removal, its not a case of lashing down some grit like you do in the car park in your job... Also depending on how severe and persistent the fall is there is no failsafe way to keep an airport 100% open its all down to Mother Nature and how prepared you are also. Some airports will be more equipped then others of course.

In fairness to the poster you quoted, I believe he was asking, rather than saying it should be done that way.

Anyway, very nice explanation. I learned something new myself!

I can't find the post from a couple of days ago, but A332 EI-DAA headed back north this morning out of Dublin around 06:15.

Any news on the russkies? Apparently they had ADB turned off so "only military ATC could follow them" whatever that means. Various uninformed items on the BBC etc., puffed up by the military apologists showing how well the RAF respnded. Wasn't listening/watching at the time (yesterday afternoonish?)

Still coming-up daily on the HF utility frequencies.

I think the main difference with their activities on the 28th was their persistence around the whole UK + Ireland coast, instead of just buzzing the East Coast and lumbering home.

It also showed how daft it is to send-up tiny, short-range fighters when the tanker supporting them was more capable of staying with the Bears...

BLOCKED callsign has just passed over me. Looks like it's heading for Shannon. It appeared on radar near Greece. I presume it's military, but from what I could see it looked like a private jet.

Anyone near Shannon that could have a quick squint at it?
