Finding the winter running tough myself.

Are you running Fields of Athenry 10k on Friday? If so I'll see you there.

    Either way, Happy Christmas.

I've entered P, so if I get planning permission, I'll see you there.

What time are you hoping for?

Hope you have a great Christmas break.

Can't say with any degree of accuracy but my best is probably about 41 right now.
Plan B is to do it easy and another 10k afterwards.

Planning permission issues here too so not certain I'll make it.

Would you be trying to go hard?

Still only getting back into it and the fitness isn't where it should but , I'll try and go out with the 40 min pacer and see if I can hang on. Recent 5k suggests I'll struggle but I'll give it a lash!

I switched the planned session from yesterday to today.

    Plan called for 2m wu & cd, plus 5 x 1 miles off 90 second recovery. Planned pace was 6.35 - 6.45.

Wasn't looking forward to this at all and I was rushing and caught for time. A friend of mine had promised me a few lobster but I hadnt counted on them being live and I had to find a big container and fill it with sea water!! Ended up doing this at the end of the prom at Blackrock down the back of the golf course that has been recently resurfaced. Its about .5 of a mile long so each rep was an out and back. Only got 1.5 mile warm up done before starting the first rep into the breeze. The first rep was the hardest of the lot and felt laboured. At the start of the 4th rep there wss a big downpour and the wind really whipped up. The first half mile of the 4th rep saw the pace drop to 6.55 and it took a good effort to bring the rep pace within the planned pace.

Happy to have this done as earlier in the morning it looked like I might have to miss it,

Didnt get a chance to do any warm down.

    Splits;

    6.28
    6.23
    6.19
    6.38
    6.36

    Happy Christmas everyone.

Yesterday: a marathon eating to excess session.

Today : the plan called for a 10k race.

I entered the Fields of Athenry which always attracts some large numbers and some quality runners.

It was absolutely pissing down when I arrived to collect my number about a hour before the start. Got my number very quickly and a green Fields of Athenry hat. I beat a hasty retreat to the car an turned up the heat to try and warm up the auld bones. The rain seemed to be remorseless and I didn't get out of the car until 15 mins before the start. I tried to find the 40 min pacer and see if Snailsong was around but I couldn't see either. The only pacing ballon I could see was the 45 min one, so I positioned myself a bit ahead of this. The start area was a sea of green hats bobbing up and down to keep warm as it was wet, damp and cold. The gun went and we were off, there is a short incline after the start and I didn't feel comfortable even this early, but I thought I might work myself into it. Managed the first 3k in 12 mins but only managed a 4.09 for the 4th k and it became a struggle from here.

Felt sorry for myself crossing the line in 41.29, that's just over 2 mins of my PB from April this year! Snailsong came over to me at the line, and we had a chat, he managed a very respectable. 40.15/20.

I forgot to bring a dry top so I didn't stay long in the hall. If I get up to Westport P, I'll give you a shout for a run and well done today.

On my way out I met one of the lads I know who is a bit older than me and who I would usually expect to finish slightly ahead of. "Hey how'd you do"? him "just over 40", me, "Jesus, you must be happy with that!", him, "ah yea, especially that I ran a 50k on a treadmill a couple of days ago for charity", me (under my breath) "fcuk off ya bollix" and out loud "enjoy the Xmas!!"

At least I know where I'm at and what I need to do to get the fitness back. I was in this kinda limbo land for a couple of weeks after Limerick before I started running well again.

Couldn't depend on Santa to deliver some running form for Xmas so I'll just have to do it the hard way!

    Splits

    6.24
    6.30
    6.49
    6.34
    6.50
    6.53
    Bit 6.23 pace

Good to meet you again today.
The plan to meet up behind the 40 min pacer was a good one, we weren't to know he'd be keeping such a low profile. I only spotted him after 1 k myself, if we could have pooled our resources we might both have done better. You couldn't have been far behind as he started to give me the slip at 7k. I was sure you hadn't made it until I spotted you at the finish.

How's about we come back next year and get two of the top 50 t-shirts? About 39:00 should do it.

Looking forward to seeing you in Westport.

Martyboy, how did you get on? We should have made a plan to identify each other.

    Fancy dress next year :)

Personally I think ye're all mad, racing the day after Christmas. If you kept it down, if you kept the breakfast down, you did well in my book.

    :)

Well done on toughing it out, wasn't particularly pleasant out there. I have no doubt you'll be hitting form and targets when it really matters, when the likes of me is burnt out :)

By the way, there was a lad running ahead of me in the first k who had a most unusual gait/running form. I wouldn't normally take much notice, but remembered you on about "the duck". I actually let out a little giggle to myself before finally composing myself about 200meters up the road :D

ps I don't think it was actually you, I just got a vision of a giant duck like creature waddling along with us :D:D

Great run today Marty, I doubt I was ahead of you at any point today, I started out with the duck waddle today alright but ended up doing the turkey tango :)

Today the plan called for 3/7 miles recovery/easy am and pm.

Got the nursing home run just before lunch and in between showers. My middle lad ran the first mile and a half with me and the pace was very slow which suited me just fine. Finding myself a bit lethargic, stiff and slow to recover lately so I think it's time to reach for some supplements. I'm also coming out in a dose of carabunkles and pimples that a hormonal teenager would be proud of!

    Am: 3.2 miles @ 10.40

I really struggled to get out again tonight, missus TbL was putting mince pies in the oven and whipping fresh cream, the fire was blazing away and the diet coke was on ice :) Berated myself out the door just before 9 and got 7 very easy miles in along a local loop. Nice evening for it but all I could think about for the hour was those feckin mince pies. :)

    Pm: 7.1 miles

There is a 5k run in town on New Year's Day and mrs TbL and the two older kids are going to do it. I was gonna race it but after a discussion with coach we decided it would be better if I just get back to a consistent training regime. I'll probably jog it as part of that days planned easy run.

Today the plan called for 14 miles.

I got up early today to get this one done but the roads were icy and slippy so I put it off till later. I forgot that I had a family occassion to attend, in Galway, today until the missus mentioned it to me around lunch time. This put me under pressure to get the run in at all, Mrs TbL told me id only an hour or so window. Decided that I'd start running from the house towards Galway and the clan would follow behind like a race sweeper van and pick me up once they reached me. Had just passed Rossaveal and was on the Tully road when I could hear my young lad shouting out of the car behind me!

At this stage I'd only about 10.5 miles done but I was delighted to see them, my groin and hip flexor were very stiff at the start and only got tighter and tighter as the miles went by. It was too cold to stop and walk so I kept shuffling along until the family recsue vehicle appeared.

Not a nice run at all and I've a massage booked for tomorrow that will hopefully loosen out the tightness.

    Total 10.56 miles

    Splits:

    8.27
    7.49
    8.02
    7.50
    7.54
    7.56
    8.08
    8.04
    8.28
    8.42
    8.44 pace for the bit
