Putting Cyanogenmod on a Xiaomi Redmi 1S

There are plenty of guides out there on how to do this but yet and all I managed to have messed it up. I was a little sick of MIUI so decided to give Cyanogenmod a go for "closer to stock Android" experience.

I installed TWRP recovery through the app as the phone is rooted and then put the Cyanogenmod and Google Apps zip files ont the root of my SD card. Turned the phone on and went into TWRP recovery, wiped the data/cache/delvic cache, then installed the zip files, wiped the data/cache/delvic cache again and rebooted. Now I only get the "Mi" logo and it won't progress any further with the boot.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I should do? To be honest I just wanted rid of the Chinese apps I didn't need/understand and clear the crap from my phone...

Did you make a backup? You could reload that, and try again. I'd redownload the cyanogenmod file and gapps again, and make 100% sure you're following all of the steps.

Hi Mark, thanks for that. I'm going to give it another go today by following this guide to just get back to MIUI (for now) and fix up the mess I've made - http://www.technobuzz.net/redmi-1s-dead-bricked-guide-fix/

You don't wipe data and cache after you install the ROM / Gapps, only before hand. This is why you are getting a boot loop.

Argh! I see, thank you. I'll give that a go.

Damn, doesn't seem to be working either. I'm using TWRP and when I ask it to wipe cache etc before attempting to flash the ROM it says E: Unable to mount '/system' and E: Unable to stat '/data/miui'

No idea what that means but looks like I'm still in trouble...

    Ended up doing the following:

1 - Flashed the phone with MIUI using the fastboot mode using this guide. I know I wanted rid of MIUI (I wanted to give Cyanogenmod a proper go) but as the phone was, i think, soft-bricked, I wanted anything back!

2 - The phone is meant to reboot itself afterward but it did not, again it was stuck on the logo screen at start-up. After taking the battery out and then reinserting it I pressed "volume up" and "power" together to get the phone to start in recovery mode.

3 - To my surprise TWRP recovery mode did not appear but rather Xiaomi/MIUI's own recovery mode. This indicated to me that the fastboot flash had deleted some stuff anyway... (to my non expert brain).

4 - Using the stock recovery mode I wiped the cache and rebooted....stuck in a boot loop again though.

5 - Again using the stock recovery I wiped "all user data" and rebooted. It took a little longer than usual but it booted up.

Phew. Not sure whether to try and put Cyanogenmod on again now though...

Go once more and do the following:

    1. Enter fastboot, flash recovery (fastboot flash recovery path/to/recovery.img (try CWM this time)
    2. Reboot to Recovery mode
    3. Wipe Data / Cache once
    4. Install CM11 followed by Gapps straight after (not before)
    5. Reboot and wait up to 2 minutes for boot to occur.

Might give that a go tomorrow actually. I had deleted a load of the Chinese apps from the phone but I ended up deleting the calendar stuff so Google Calendar won't even sync up now and it seems like a flash of the ROM is the only way out of that one again! If I do it I'll let you know how it goes.

Just trying Mokee OpenSource at the mo. It's based on Cyanogenmod, runs on Android 4.4.4 and is supposed to be very very smooth. Just setting up so we'll see...

Ended up putting on Cyanogenmod and very happy with it. Took a couple of tries and had to wipe the cache a few times afterwards to stop a boot loop but now its very stable, smoother than MIUI and seems to release more RAM for me to use too.
