I'm now charging the battery! I'll get the tyre pumped up and the slow puncture fixed, SWMBO wants it gone. I'm leaning more towards the recyclers. It's a pity as it was a fantastic car to drive. I got the sump dropped and cleaned and the upgraded PCV kit fitted not that long ago with the intention to hold on to it , but we were getting about 24mpg around town and decided enough was enough!

Stick it up for sale for a few hundred as you described it man, you never know who'll want it, there's a lot of people out there, with a lot of interest in different things, and to be fair, it doesn't sound that at all bad as you describe it, shame to scrap a cracking motor like that!

I'll think about that versus no hassle from a reycler! She's coming back to life, alarm led winking on the dash, turned the key and aircon coming on, stereo now working ( must take the CD's out of the changer!). Computer says she needs a headlight bulb, forgot about that! Will start her up tomorrow!

I don't want to turn this thread into a sneaky way of selling a car! The Saab is a 2000 9-5 2.3 LPT se estate with 112k on the clock, navy with sand leather. It's been off the road since May, having been replaced with a diesel Pug 407 sw. The reason I replaced it was the fact it guzzled petrol around town. Known faults when she went off the road were the soft front tyre, missing pixels in the SID, an oil weep from the oil pressure switch( new part obtained but not fitted), a rattle from inside the drivers door and a missing top for the windscreen washer bottle! Oh and the battery is flat, I've just tried it! I haven't tried to sell it because (a) I did'nt think anyone would want a 14 years old 2.3 Turbo petrol! (b) I was too lazy and could'nt bear the thought of dealing with tyre kickers. Too be honest I've never sold a car to anyone other than friends in my life!

Not at all, I think the rule is that you have to disclose that a car your putting up here is your own car if that is the case; not that you are advertising the car for sale. All the problems you mention are very minor that I'm sure you could sort out yourself and the bulb thats needed is only a cheap consumable anyway.

I reckon it'll be well worth your while to fix the car up, ideally NCT it and advertise it for sale. Saabs do have a strong band of followers who would be interested, just go over to the bangernomics thread and you'll see what I mean. Not a Saab man myself but thats only cause I never tried them to be fair.

I wont lie to you though, having sold a few cars myself in my day you will most likely get a few dopes ringing you acting the maggot, especially for a car asking small money I reckon but all it is is the hassle of taking a few annoying calls at the end of the day you can always hang up.

You might end up having it on the driveway for a few extra weeks I suppose but I'm sure that SWMBO whomever they are will get over that if its being there since May already at this stage...

OP, I think that you underestimate the value of your car. Your faults are minor and the saab 9-5 is a lovely car. It is worth more than 200 quid from a scrapyard.

    Where are you based?

11 wingnut thanks for the info, I may give that lad a ring! Toyotaavensis I've an apology to make to you, we were talking about this car back in May but I was going on holidays the next day, got a PM from you and forgot to reply! She's still charging as I type. I'll start her up tomorrow, as I said at the time I'm in Dundalk!

A nice looking facelift 5 series. Any ideas on what the issue could be? If it was a timing chain issue, then why isnt it misfiring cold as well?

Could be as simple as a Vacuum leak or a faulty MAF sensor, I'd be looking at the sensor first myself.

Yes. That assumption was assumed.

But even still i reckon its unlikely to be the ecu itself, more a wiring/connection issue or, worse, a sensor within the box. I had an auto LR discovery a few years ago that had similar issues and everyone told me it needed a new zf autobox, at a cool €2300 + vat. It was solved with a €1 dab of silicone in the multiplug.

Anyway, speculation is a great game. You would want to have a look at it to see if it was worth the punt.

The NCT expired on the 7/11. I'd be wondering why the seller isn't putting it through an NCT.
He also has another Peugeot for sale which has an NCT until 02/15.

A couple of fixeruppers for ye's...

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/astra-bertone-1-8-16v-coupe/8132588

Astra Bertone Coupe which were a sought enough after car in their day, rightly or wrongly so. Looks in good order and were told its in good condition. Only worth a punt if nothing major needs attention upon inspection I reckon. The fact that the seller can spell brakes properly is on the face of it a good start in my book:p, No mention of mileage is a black mark though...

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/toyota-avensis-d4d-2004/8296842

2004 Avensis D4D. Were told it "needs small work" but what people will define as "small work" will invariably vary considerably. If it is indeed a small job and something you could pin-point and fix for small money it could be a grand well spent....if you got it for that.

    But 'it's a German'

From Googling it, it seems to be a common problem with that clutch setup on the Opels/Vauxhauls.
Seems to be that it's the gearbox ECU which seems to pack up.
If the car starts then it's the clutch which has gone, if it doesn't then it could be the actuator.
Some people in the UK are saying they paid over 1k to have that repaired.
The best bit? No other actuator will work with the car so buying second hand isn't an option. The only option available is to have the ECU sent off for repair.
    I'd stay well away.

Or stick a clutch pedal in it.

    Wouldn't be worth it.

I suppose its still an astra

(Far as I know it has a conventional clutch and gearbox so it could be doable)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,894 ✭✭✭✭bear1

The clutch and gearbox would be normal just with an electric actuator bolted onto it.
There would be 2 ECUs so you'd have to have one ECU disconnected and reprogramme the main ECU to know that it is now a manual.
Then you'd need to buy the master and slave cylinders for the clutch pedal, plus extra piping, gear linkages and of course the gearstick.
For an Astra, I wouldn't bother at all.

could be a nice fixer upper if you got him down to €1250 or so. spend maybe the same again getting it going (at a guess) and you have a decent model for the price of most of the ones with "hot start" issues on donedeal.

But you will never get shot of it again. I think you should approach it with the assumption that it needs an engine rebuild at the very least.

Other than needing an engine rebuild when most cars need an oil change, its a great car...

i kind of assumed that €1250 would cover or go a long way towards a rebuild, but i have no idea really. what are you talking for a full job?

i reckon if it cost you €2.5 - €3k to buy it and get it on the road, you could get a fair chunk of that back in a years time with a "fresh rebuild", plus, that'd make it quite saleable too.

I know in the UK a 'proper' rebuild (one that wont result in the same issue 12 months down the road) starts at £2k sterling, using Mazda parts. Some engines need more work than others, depending on how long they were run while worn.

Probably no more than email to the rx club in ireland will get you the price here. And yes, as long as the car was still running and starting ok in 12 months, you would probably recoup a lot of it.

I only know this as I toyed with the idea of one that was offered to me for £400 quid last year, but after looking into it, I chickened out and went for a saab 9-3 convertible. :D

I was working in IT for a sub prime car finance company in the UK at the time, and we would loan money on anything, but one of the few cars we banned was that infernal Mazda.
