There has been speculation that Mata might go the other way to get the deal done.

I'd be surprised if Strootman was signed in January. I think he will b e a big target in the summer but I don't think he will move in January.

He is only just now really returning to the Roma side, still can't play consecutive games and probably has another while before he is physically 100% again, and longer until he is back to the top of his game. I'd also be surprised if he did anything to try force a move in January given he has only just returned from injury - would be a massive show of disrespect, imo, and I don't think he would do that to Roma.

They may be out of the CL, but we weren't in it to begin with, and they are still on pace to go for the title, so its not like they have nothing to play for over the rest of the season.

We shouldn't sign him until he proves himself anyway. Lucas wasn't too dissimilar a player to Strootman before his ACL injury and it ruined him.

Vidic has had a nightmare time for Inter

It's all very gossipy at the minute, a lot of reputable sources running with it under their gossip sections. Not a whole lot of concrete info tbh.

It wouldn't overly surprise me though.

Has he not been poor this season in a slower league and he is also injury prone.

I'm torn over the Vidic rumours. I don't think I want him back, well, I know I don't want him back it does no good long term, but it would provide some leadership and stability to the backline theoretically for this season anyway.

If Van Gaal wants to continue with 3 at the back he would be a good option for the centre piece flanked by Smalling/Jones and Rojo/Evans

I think the negatives out weigh the positives though

Only played 9 times for Inter so far this season in all competitions

I see Lucas Moura is beginning to rediscover some form for PSG this season. Seeing as he is almost 2 years into his 3.5 years term at the club would anyone see him as a viable replacement for Valencia? I think a nice £15-£20M bid next Summer would tempt them a lot and he is still relatively young.

    Strootman following AIB.

    Might be off to LOI.

As for Vidic, thanks, but no thanks.

Unless its in some coaching role or similar.

There's a chance he may not have settled in Italy and that's been more of a problem for him at Inter rather than his actual ability. Not sure he's quite 'done' yet. People thought Terry was done 3 years ago after a rough patch.

I think Vidic would be a fantastic short-term solution. We should then try break the bank for Hummels, Hoewedes and Varane next summer and sell Smalling and Evans.

Haven't seen him play at all since he left Utd to be honest. But by most accounts he seems to be struggling. Personally I think it could be worth the risk of bringing him in with a view to cementing a top four finish this season. Evans and Vidic together again could be decent.

I don't know why so many mention Varane as a potential target. He gets plenty of game time for Madrid and he's going to overtake Pepe sooner rather than later. Madrid aren't letting him go and I can't see him agitating for a transfer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,248 ✭✭✭kstand

I reckon the Vidic stuff is classic 2+2=6.
As for Strootman - he can now move it would seem.
Benfica out of everything too - Perez rumours going round and doubtless the Gaitan rumours will start up again. Same with Wesley Sneijder although they started them up 2 weeks ago. Cant see anyone leaving any of the clubs in the last 16 of the CL.
I wonder is there much legs on the rumour I heard that Bale will be sold in the summer so Real can bring Reus in?

He's a much better centre half than that embarrassment to mankind. cant believe that they rate Pepe and leave Varane on the bench.

Madrid are completely fickle though. They would happily take 30 million and buy in another superstar like Kompany or Subotic.

Pepe is a lunatic but he's also a very good centre back.

Struggled exactly in that role for Inter.

TBH I think Vidic is worth the risk in January on a short term contract. A world class centre back is still needed in the summer but if Vidic preformed well and got offered another year with the club it'd possible allowed the club to loan out both McNair and Blackett to get more regular game time. Utd would still have Jones, Rojo, Smalling, Evans, Vidic and New CB as their options.

They see Varane as the future, he's very much in their plans. No doubt as a club they can be mental at times, but I don't think they're mental enough to get rid of possibly the best CB prospect to be seen in years.

Terry would be done now if he wasn't surrounded by a very solid defensive unit.

Agreed, its why he gets away with the sh*t he does and other players of course. If he was average he would have been gone a long time ago.

On a personal note, just got a text off a mate to say I've got a ticket for Spurs away on the 28th. One is very pleased.

    They are totally different players

So do you see them playing together? With Rooney, Herrerra and Carrick?

One more player that pushes other players into positions that Mata would normally be in

I knew someone would reply with that

Agreed. That's why I'd have doubts about bringing Vidic back as we don't have a solid defensive unit. However van Gaal has spoken of his desire to implement one and we've generally seen improvement on that front over the last few weeks despite all the chopping and changing.

ed woodward has stated on more than one occasion they will not be signing players for short term fixes. They have a list of targets for next summer, should any of these be available in January they will make a move if not they wont.

Vidic is well past it at this stage, slow and liable to get sent off.

Have we? Arsenal should have scored a few agaisnt us. Stoke should have scored a few against us. Southampton should have scored a few against us.

De Gea has been fantastic, and we have ridden our luck defensively, imo. We have not been solid.

Yeah, and if 4th spot looks in serious danger I'm sure we'll continue with the exact same injury prone defenders rather than try to bring in someone like Vlaar or Vidic. We'll stick to what Woodward has said, in public, cause he wouldn't want to be shown to be telling fibs - or that plans might change.

    2^2+2= 6

Maybe they are onto something but got their maths wrong?
