I have both. I haven't gone back to the Paperwhite since I got my Fire. The battery lasts longer on the Paperwhite and the screen isn't as bright (both at the lowest brightness setting), but in a good way. I wouldn't have an issue going back to the Paperwhite, but I mainly use the Fire as I can check my mail at the same time or use Goodreads.

Thanks! Order placed on Amazon as they had previously sent me a 30% off code for Kindles so it worked out at £76.30 for the ad-free version.

If you don't mind me asking Was it an individual code just for you?

Yes, it was unfortunately. They sent it back in July but I had kept it bookmarked.

Unless you flash it with stock android, in which case it was a bit of a bargain.

Thinking of picking up 3 of these for all my family as the price on amazon.de seems great.

100 euro for a great tablet. I guess I can change the language on it from German.

    Thanks for the mailbox.de link

It will probably be cheaper to ship directly from Amazon to Ireland rather than use the mailbox.de link. That should only be used for products that Amazon won't ship to ireland (which may include the kindle, i'm not sure).

FYI I bought my daughter (9) the older fire HD this time last year and she still uses it all the time. It's a great bit of kit. She does a bit of gaming on it but reads and listens to music on it too.
Imo it's the perfect tablet for kids cos of the simplified OS and cos it's kindle it's all about the books.

What firmware version are the current stock of Kindle 7 HDX on out of the box?

Has anyone who has bought one recently successfully installed Google Play store? Or Android?

Did you connect to the net before trying to root and did it upgrade to 4.5.1 before you tried to root it?

    Yes on both questions Snake

I assume that was a bad thing :D

Yes, the kindle updates automatically once connected to the net.

Currently it is not possible to root if it is on 4. firmware, it needs to be on 3. firmware.

The question is if current stock are on a 3. firmware out of the box and then update to 4.5.1 or if they are already on 4.1.1 out of the box and then upgrade to 4.5.1 OTA.

Has anyone checked the firmware no. on a recently purchased Fire HDX before connecting to the net?

[Edit] @dconstantin there are various tutorials on the net for installing Google Play store without rooting. I don't know if this is still possible on 4.5.1 have you tried something like this?

Got this and it came with version 13.3.0.5; Device: KFTHWI.

I was able to root it following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2665683

Installed Google Play using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2787813

Google Play kept on crashing the first time so I uninstalled all 4 APKs, clearing cache and data with all four. Reinstalled them and Google Play's working fine.

Maybe yours has developed a fault leading you to have to return for another unit ;)

heh, is just me updating the OS without having a clue that this upgrade will mess up with my chances of getting google play working :)

Hi Raoul! Tried to reply to you but I think your inbox is full.

I'm really sorry but I have no idea if you could put xbmx in this.

Sorry for not being able to help you more... not a expert on these things. :-(

Maybe someone in here could answer your question. I'm sure there are people here who would be knowledgeable on these things. :-)

Yeah you should probably delete the thing after xbmc. Cheers for getting back to me. Anyone know if you can put xbmc on it after you root it? And would this be as good or better than a Nexus 7?
