False report to Gardai

Hi, Is there a penalty for making a false report to Gardai in relation to a home burglary or does it only become a crime if they contact the insurance company to make a claim? Thanks.

I would say, yes. Garda time is scarce and wasting it could get you into trouble alright. Enough of it is wasted with the Irish Water debacle as it is.
