Cracked Tooth Options

    I recently cracked my first premolar which had a root canal years ago. The outer wall of the tooth is okay but the inner half cracked and had to be pulled.

    The two options I was recommended were to either get a Crown or an Implant.

    I think I shall go for the Crown option for the moment but he mentioned because of the shape of this particular tooth, Crowns tend not to last that long.

    Is there any other options I should consider?

    If the inner half had to be pulled then the margin for the crown may have to be below the crestal level of bone. This is not ideal and may require an extra procedure known as crown lengthening.
    In my expierience these teeth do not last as long as we would like. I do not have all the facts but personally I would lean towards implant.

    A bridge (resin bonded or conventional crown retained) may be an option depending on the condition of the adjacent teeth, however usually an implant is the best optioon. Premolars are problematic to crown, often need posts and have a high incidence of root fractures down the line. This risks will depend on your individual case, but sound like you dentists is giving you the right advice.
