Well I'm not in the business of turning fixer uppers around so I don't know :)

But by the looks of things, that car could well pass without any work and a good condition, decent looking, taxed, very reliable 1l Micra with longish test is probably worth about €800?

So you could well be looking at around €250 profit after collecting it and putting it through the NCT (and accounting for what that would cost you). Mind that profit could evaporate very, very quickly if anything half serious is wrong with the car. Even a few part worns would make a serious dent in it.

For the craic I put a call in to the seller just after I posted above. Got voicemail, left message but haven't heard back...

Probably about right. But you have to ask why it wasnt tested? Problem with some of those micras is oil burning causing high HC readings and failing NCT. Not easy to fix (honestly anyway :D)

I bought a 00 Punto ELX last month for 440e without test. 50e in service parts, a patched exhaust and cancelled the airbag light, test next week. I will let you know how i get on! If i sell it on next week, I would hope to get around the 800e markTe

Dude, it would be criminal to sell that on without a working airbag. Just sayin'

Nah, I have the fiat software. The airbag ecu had two errors, the seat squab and a low voltage error. The seat squab sensor throws errors due to bad connections every now and again ( especially if the owner has short legs,,,) and the battery is just a transient error. I cleared both and they havent reoccurred, The system is working correctly.

I do apologise. Completely misinterpreted you there. I thought you disabled the airbag light (as in unplugged the bulb or something)!

I have an intermittent airbag light issue on my E60 myself which I clear from time to time through BMW software :)

No worries! I find that with the right tools its easier to fix the problem than to to bodge or cover it up.

This is an interesting topic, as the value of NCT'ed cars can be so low that actually making money on fixer uppers is very difficult, bordering on chance.

    2005 Rover 45

Still with NCT and taxed until April next. Should be a simple fix.

If they are flexible a bit on price, should be a few quid here for someone:

    2006 Pug 407 1.8

    Asking - 950, Target price - 850e

Needs HG and some other bits (o/s rear cluster?), but looks like it could tidy well. Few quid there on turn over, or dirt cheap 06 family bus.

    Afternoon all,

So had a bit of bad news over the weekend. My Bangernomics e200 was in an accident. A friend of a friend was burning around a country road and clung a wall.

The front o/s wing is gone, and the rear o/s quarter panel is knackered. The steering is also a bit wonky. Rang the scrap yard this morning and they offered me scrap value.. about €120.

Shes taxed for 3 months and NCT'd for another 5.

Is it worth anything to anyone or should I cut my losses and send it to car heaven?

Donedeal it damage repairable for 700 take 500 and if it doesn't sell , scrap it ,however I bet you get min 300 for it if not 500.
It might be worth keeping until you locate another, fresher one that may need parts.

    E200?

I bought a clean non-starter 99 e200 auto last year for €100, needed a ECU/key/ignition solenoid. Rang a few scrappers and they were looking for €400

Bought a same model year crashed one with leather for €240 as a donor car. Pulled the bits out to get the first one started plus the leather plus a few other bits Inc half tank fuel and sold it to a proper recycler - €200. Made €150 on other parts I pulled out and sold via eBay plus €50 petrol removed - cleared €160 plus free parts.

So with donor electrics and leather transplant plus an NCT, sold €950. Cleared €1k for 2 days work, it helped the bottom line having a car transporter trailer!

Moral of the story? Scrap it and remove the high value electric items first.

Actually, if you want, I still have a drivers airbag & ecu for a 99 e200, free to good home

Where can you get €200 from a recycler? I've a Saab 9-5 estate SWMBO has said must be off the driveway ASAP!

Goes by weight and haggling. You must bring it to a recycler to maximise the price.

I'd better pump up the soft tyre so! I really didn't know a recycler paid for the car. The last time I took a car to the recycler was my daughters Punto with 60k miles and underbody rust, Nobody mentioned money!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,338 ✭✭✭mullingar

Make sure you look up your local council website to get the areas approved recycler.

Ring around a few scrap yards and ask how much they will offer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 267 ✭✭93Cab

As you can deduce this is all new to me! The car has a good Harmon Kardon sound system which might be useful for another Saab estate. You can take this out?

I think you were really really lucky to buy that non starter E200 for 100 quid Mullingar. It was clearly a giveaway at that price, irrespective of how depressed the market is, as any E200 would be worth closer to 200 quid scrap value. I'm guessing it wasn't advertised, rather bought of a friend or an acquaintance whom you were doing a favour in a way as it may have being taking up space on their driveway...clearly they were the ones doing you the favour though:)

If a car such as that was advertised it would be well gone by the time a mere mortal like me got to it...

At 200quid for the crashed Merc from the recycler you got a very good price for it. I would have thought 140/150 would be more on the money.

Recycler obviously took advantage of your apparent lack of knowledge 93Cab. If it were me I'd actually nearly challenge them on it now and take the other car to another recycler. You probably wont get any joy out of it as its done and dusted now and some of them guys wouldn't be the nicest to deal with to say the least.

Be careful about driving the other car to a recycler though if its not insured/ taxed/ NCT'd/ road-worthy I wouldn't. If you met a guard you might be in a spot of bother to say the least. If the tax was missing and it was just out of NCT you might be able to sweet talk your way out of it (assuming its not a robocop type Guard). If the other 2 are missing though i.e. insurance and the car is very apparently un-roadworthy I'd be getting the recycler to lift it from my house

That souldn't be a problem at all. As a rule of thumb I think main thins is that the car is rolling. After that they will pay by weight......

Good point! Having said that I would'nt get behind the wheel of a car without being insured! Apart from the soft front tyre the car only needs a wash and is completely roadworthy!

What are the details of the car 93Cab and why are you sending it to the crusher? If it is as you say completely roadworthy apart from a soft tyre it is most likely a shame to be crushing it. I'm guessing it needs some tidying up but if the Head Gasket or something like that needs doing then yeah it might be the best idea to send it to car heaven alright:)....depends on the car and whats wrong with it really.

Might be worth posting the details here. One of the lads viewing the thread my be interested. I may even be interested myself depending on your location;)

I don't want to turn this thread into a sneaky way of selling a car! The Saab is a 2000 9-5 2.3 LPT se estate with 112k on the clock, navy with sand leather. It's been off the road since May, having been replaced with a diesel Pug 407 sw. The reason I replaced it was the fact it guzzled petrol around town. Known faults when she went off the road were the soft front tyre, missing pixels in the SID, an oil weep from the oil pressure switch( new part obtained but not fitted), a rattle from inside the drivers door and a missing top for the windscreen washer bottle! Oh and the battery is flat, I've just tried it! I haven't tried to sell it because (a) I did'nt think anyone would want a 14 years old 2.3 Turbo petrol! (b) I was too lazy and could'nt bear the thought of dealing with tyre kickers. Too be honest I've never sold a car to anyone other than friends in my life!

    Dont worry about that!

By the sounds of it, it would be well worth the 20 mins and 5 euro to stick it on done deal as damaged/repairables. Describe it exactly as you have done here and you should get some interest. That way someone will take it away for you!

It does sound like its worth saving, nothing you mentioned is beyond a competent DIY'er.

I agree with checking the recyclers too. I got 250 notes for a 00 PT Cruiser on UK plates that nobody wanted. Still had a month left on its MOT!!

I'm now charging the battery! I'll get the tyre pumped up and the slow puncture fixed, SWMBO wants it gone. I'm leaning more towards the recyclers. It's a pity as it was a fantastic car to drive. I got the sump dropped and cleaned and the upgraded PCV kit fitted not that long ago with the intention to hold on to it , but we were getting about 24mpg around town and decided enough was enough!
