Hearing people talk about how eircoms speeds at nighttime are suffering made me wonder how much my connection suffers at nightime.

Daytime : During the day i get my full connection speed

Night : During the night i average 4-7mb and my pings are generally higher

Do all Service providers in Ireland suffer from congestion and what is acceptable on a 20mb or even a fibre connection. Is 75% drop in connection speed justified simply because of the greater flow of traffic at night?

You're on fixed wireless? You congestion is local then, different to eircoms peering issues. If a FWA provider oversells their masts that will always happen as its a shared medium.

Yes fixed wireless everything works fine, youtube, netflix etc however downloads suffer at night and ping is a little higher. So I assume its mainly an I.S.P issue in this case so

Have you tried a wired Ethernet connection to check your mean-speed ?. Also run the speed-test without anti-virus running to see what you get. It's also a problem if you are far from the exchange. Or try another speed test network.

Yes the pc is connected through Ethernet, my connection seems perfect until ~6-11pm each night.

Well from 6 -11pm is when it will be defo congested, everyone home from work and school using it at this time, so you will notice a large drop. I am on UPC 120MB and even I notice a slowdown at these times. I changed my router channel settings from auto to a different channel and it helped a bit, but not all the time.

In a ideal world, your aiming for 80% utilization of your links on average during busy periods. They can hit 100% through spikes but that will be for limited periods. In your case, if you ran that test a couple of times during peak period and found a substantial downgrade of bandwidth consistently, you would have a issue.

If it wasn't wireless. Wireless is a different ballgame to wired links, its very open to congestion due to the way it works. A 100Mb's wired link should do 100mbps both ways. A 100Mb's wireless link losses bandwidth for each active user.
