High ping, anyone?

    Hey guys,

Tonight I noticed that my ping in Mount & Blade Warband was significantly higher than usual. In a game that seems very sensitive to ping (mine usually sits at 50-55 and a change to even 60 makes a difference) it was pretty bad. I thought my flatmate might be playing Destiny, as I note that whenever he does the router shows a fair increase in upload bandwidth, but no, he's just come home from work and gone straight to bed.

So I thought the other one might be uploading something - nope, he's in bed sick. I went downstairs to check what the media pc was doing... maybe someone left a torrent open or something. Nope, it wasn't even on. Hmm. Turned off the SamKnows box which is only connected to the media pc these days, and which used to cause disconnects in M&B - nope. With neither flatmate using the 'net at all, and my not doing anything other than Warband and some browsing, I reset the router. Nope, ping is still bad. I went to speedtest.net - ping of 27 and both upload and download speeds were fine. The router is now showing an upload rate of 2-3kb, which is likely just applications connecting with their servers.

Since I'm an admin on the server I usually play on, I asked one of the guys who run it if anything was up. He mentioned that another admin, another guy from Ireland, was also having high ping earlier. Nobody else has reported ping issues with the server, and in fact another server in my favourite list, one I hardly ever visit, was also showing a much higher ping than is usual.

So I'm wondering if Eircom has been up to something that's maybe responsible for this? Or Vodafone even, since I'm with them after UTV left the market. Has anyone else had issues with high ping? I'm suspicious of Eircom after another Irish player reported high pings and after I cleared my connection of any wrongdoing, at least from this side...

But to be honest, I'm just grasping at straws here.

Seems to be some significant issues with Eircom:

I suspect they've saturated their peering links.

    Thanks, man.

Goddamn Eircom. The sooner the ESB-Vodafone FTTH thing arrives here the better... the day we leave the phone line and our reliance on Eircom will be a happy one indeed.
