Can't update Skype/Firefox

    Hi,

I found an old Acer laptop and got it going again. It's running Windows XP. Anyways, I tried updating Firefox because Gmail won't work on the current Firefox and it won't update Firefox. I also tried to use Skype and it told me I'm using an old version so I tried updating but again no luck!

My own laptop that I use daily is also an old Acer, is Windows XP but it works fine with Gmail/Firefox/Skype all of old...

Any reason why this is happening?

The latest version of Skype needs a full install, there is no update option....at least that's what happened me recently. So completely uninstall the one you have, then get the latest installer.

    Not sure about Firefox though.

XP is no longer supported, so there may be compatibility issues. You could try getting an older version of firefox and stick that on.

Yeah, this could be the reason.

Also to completely over-react you could wipe the yoke and put lubuntu on it? :pac:

Thanks guys, I'll uninstall Skype. As for Firefox, I am running an old version on both laptops, but Gmail will work on 1 but not the other, that has me confused!

Any differences in the extensions / add ons? Could be something blocking it. Antivirus maybe? It shouldn't though...

I found on one of my computers is that I need Service Pack 3 before I can use the new version of Skype. The old version of Skype won't work at all.

I have Service Pack 2 on it, updating to SP3 was taking hours yesterday so I just turned off the computer.

OK, you have to be on SP3 with XP for more things to work now, the best answer there is to download it on another computer, and transfer it using a memory stick or similar, there will be more than a few updates after SP3 is done, most of which are essential.

That said, I'm using Firefox 32.0.3 on an XP SP3 home machine here with no issues, have you tried a full download and offline install, rather than trying to upgrade? You may also need to check things like Java, and .net, in case there are dependencies there that are not being fulfilled by an older version.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Just to add a note about XP, its not supported anymore as an OS so its even more important to keep your applications up to date, if you insist on continuing to use XP. Make sure you upgrade to Service Pack 3 as soon as you can and install all available updates from Windows Update. It wont make you secure, as hotfixes for XP are no longer released by Microsoft, so I wouldnt be doing any internet banking or the like on it, if I were you.
