JJ Abrams and Stephen King's new show 11/22/63 has received a direct-to-series order from Hulu.

The nine-hour series - based on King's 2011 novel of the same name - follows a teacher who travels back in time in an attempt to prevent the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy.

Craig Erwich, Hulu's senior vice president and head of content, confirmed the order today (September 22). Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution will distribute the series internationally.

Abrams and King are joined as executive producers by Bridget Carpenter and Bryan Burk. Carpenter is also on board to write the teleplay.

Erwich said: "JJ Abrams and Stephen King are two of the most celebrated storytellers of our time, and we are excited to be working with them and Warner Bros. Television to bring this unique take on one of the most seminal historic events of the twentieth century to Hulu.

"11/22/63 already resonated with audiences as a best-selling novel, and we are looking forward to bringing the riveting story to the screen."

Meanwhile, King added: "If I ever wrote a book that cries out for long-form, event TV programming, 11/22/63 is it. I'm excited that it's going to happen, and am looking forward to working with JJ Abrams and the whole Bad Robot team."

Abrams said that he has been a fan of King's work since his schooldays, and described the chance to collaborate with him as "a dream".

I really hoped someone would pick that up to make a mini series.

Hulu have some fun original series. Nice to see them take a risk with this.

Haven't read the book but will watch it if they stick with the planned 9 hour mini series and don't change their minds later on and go to multi season tv like they did with Under the Dome

I can't see Hulu dragging it out, a single series is all there will be through there is room for them to tell different stories in the universe. Each series could have different characters who have access to a tear in time.

Loved the book, read it twice so far.

Can't wait for the series to start. I'm kinda happy they didn't make it into a movie, as there's too much content to try and fit into a 2.5hr time frame

It chronicles the disappearance of a decorated Philadelphia cop’s wife, which leads him to a secret government unit assembled to hunt a group of ruthless terrorists — shadowy figures that may or may not be from this world.

Yay, have been checking for news on Dominion forever! Great news.

Dominion never really sparked for me. I was expecting it to go tbh. Maybe it needs a second season to get into its stride and iron out the kinks. We'll see.

Dunno how they would do Big. Weekly show to show an adult acting like a kid? to be honest it's something that kinda suits a movie format or single episode of a tv series. And been done multiple times, either like Big where a kid suddenly becomes an adult or Freaky Friday where child and adult swap places.

Bates Motel, Hannibal and Fargo over the past couple of years prove you wrong. All have gone beyond one season, none of them have been lazy.

Big was a very charming film, it will be hard to sustain that charm over a couple of years. The whole thing will depend on who plays the lead.

Teen Wolf as well is doing well as a series, though it's nothing like the movies

I still stand by my comment that big the tv series or rush hour won't make it past one season.

I actually see potential in the 'Big' series. Don't have any interest, or see any potential in rush hour one.

FX has given a 10-episode, straight-to-series order to American Crime Story.
FX and Ryan Murphy are expanding the American Horror Story franchise with another anthology series, this time focused on some of the biggest true crime stories.

Fittingly, the new series, American Crime Story, is launching with one of the most famous cases of the past few decades: the murder trial of O.J. Simpson.

Wow, that was unexpected. Loved the first two seasons, thought it ended very well and worked well as a short two season story, but will be interesting to see how they continue it.
