like a snes one of something.

Only ever used the wii one and was handy enough to pair with PC/iPad/android/etc.
I assume the same can be done with PS3 controller, actually I see an app in the play store for it https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dancingpixelstudios.sixaxiscontroller&hl=en
What you need to pair it with?

AFAIK root access required to use PS4/wii controller.

I think rooting is much easier than it use to be

Yep rooted in 5mins.
I have actually done it before but forgotten how.
I got a snes emu for it. Works lovely but the home bar at the bottom was blocking down on the dpad and the start and select buttons.
Had to use a root only app to move the bar.
45blips for a ps3 controller!
I didn't get one.
It needs a otg cable too and I noticed when to get on locally.
