Connacht Team Talk/Gossip/Rumours Thread - Part II

Ok I'm going to post this and hope no one takes offence.

Craig Clarke arrived over to Connacht last year and I think it's fair to say that a few eyebrows were raised at Connacht signing a Super Rugby -winning captain. A major coup but a few months later, he was forced to retire. Did his repeated concussion only begin here?

Heenan was a very bright prospect and again, Connacht would not have seemed the most obvious destination. Now he's looking at his second major spell on the sidelines since his arrival on a single injury.

Now Mils Muliaina is here, a player of undoubted class but questionable fitness.

Is it possible that this is a policy at Connacht, to go hunting for quality players who maybe wouldn't normally consider Connacht but whose options are limited by injury problems?

I don't mean to be condescending but this injury to Heenan is a huge setback and it got me thinking.
I honestly don't think there's much in it.

There are clearly still questions around Craig Clarke's retirement but if you look into concussions it's easy to see how a player would play through multiple concussions and never have them "reported" properly. It's still a problem rugby is only starting to deal with. I doubt the branches medical staff realised there was a serious problem there until Clarke suffered serious concussion symptoms at Connacht. Perhaps the due diligence could have been better but I also think that there'll have been very little or no record of those concussions so the only source of the information would have been Clarke admitting them himself. We're talking about a 30 year old who knew it was too late make the All Backs team and headed to Europe for a new challenge with a three year €300k salary.

Muliana is clearly a calculated risk around a major publicity stunt. I still won't be happy with it unless he gets out on the pitch fit and playing good rugby but I can see why they went for it.

As was pointed out above Heenan left NZ to get first team rugby. We pushed him very hard last season and either (1) brought him back too early or (2) he'd already destabilised his shoulder sufficiently that it would have needed surgery anyway. Either way I think we mismanaged his welfare at least once along the way.

As for Aki, hopefully he gets out of the ITM Cup in one piece.

Eh, steady on, the guy hasn't arrived yet.

If you watched aki, then Heenan an aki are similar in simply huge ability. He doesn't need to have arrived yet. If both Heenan and aki sign for Ireland after the three years they will both be regulars. They simply are quality of an international standard and Connacht are lucky to have them. Look forward to seeing henshaw and aki as the Irish centre partnership in years to come

That's a ridiculous overstatement. Especially with the talent Ireland have coming through in both those positions.

Well I admire your optimism anyway! I've seen practically nothing of Aki but the success rate of SH imports across all provinces is patchy so let's hope he pans out.

If the same Bundee Aki turns up at Connacht as I've seen playing for the Chiefs there's no worry there. He has pace, power, the ability to offload, a big presence in defence and he's only 24. If someone in NZ doesn't see them self as an All Black in the near future the salary cap really does make a trip to Europe seem attractive.

Which is the reason Jake moved on. We have to thank pat lam for this. He has attracted an amazing bundle of talent with him. The only missing link is a quality 10. Pat, sort that and you can retire in galway

Henshaw will have to seriously up his game after the dross of last weeks crap fest from him. He gave a performance that wasn't within the same ball park as an international 13 as it would be possible to see in a pro game, particularly in the first 50 minutes.

Lets just see how the Leinster midfield handle him this week before writing him off altogether!! ;)

Nobody will be more disappointed with his performance last week than himself but it's worth remembering it was his first game of the season after coming back from surgery, he was bound to be a bit rusty. Cian Healy was far from world class against Glasgow on his first outing, does that mean he's not capable of playing top level rugby?? I think not....

It was his first game this season, he's had no pre-season games either, relax. Hardly fair to judge whether he is an international 13 on that. Also himself and McSharry really haven't spent that much time playing together believe it or not. When Henshaw played 13 last year it was either with Craig or Griffin at 12. I'd be surprised if the number was more than 3.

There were a couple of nice touches and hits in the final minutes to suggest the rust was wearing off.

Not sure if serious, or trolling Ouncer... if the latter, minus 2 points for lack of subtlety ;)

    another sponsor for the jersey

There really seems to be a good atmosphere around Connacht all interviews sound different to previous years in a way. Almost like we have ben a top team for years and this is just how we are now. It's great to read.

looking forward to tomorrow night a big game needed from 1-23, I would be worried about our penalty kicking, I have watched Leader in AIL and he used to have a better percentage, it will take time for him to get used to the bigger stage and pressure in that sense imo. It's a shame to be without Heenan but Falloon will be looking to prove a point for the next couple of months, and he played well last week. I haven't bee impressed with Roux bu hopefully going against his former province he'll go out with a point to prove. Henshaw will need to be willing to take the ball in and be smarter than last wee (I'll put it down to rustiness) but that kind of loose play will get crucified with the backline Leinster have and they will be for more up for the match than Edinburgh well

and as newstalk said let "the Connacht Juggernaught" continue

Will tickets be on sale at the turnstiles tomorrow night? Any idea what the damage is?

I was at the corresponding fixture last season and tickets were on sale at the ground the night of the match for €28 I think.
Someone else might confirm if it's the same for this fixture

Both stands are sold out and the terraces are filling quick enough, possibility of it being sold out so its safer to get it online.
At the turnstile it normally is between 25 to 30

    Who's Shane Delahunt?

Re: Connacht's hooking injury pileup. Depending on when Strauss is due back. Dundon hasn't played any games yet for Leinster this season. Could be a good injury joker to cover you guys?

Harsh on Kearney who was top tackler and lineout taker last week vs Edinburgh. Himself and Aly would have been my preferred duo with Roux to come on..

Great to see Poolman has gotten the all clear- and Healy back on bench is also encouraging

Tom Mcartny arrives end of October with Aki so if we hold out I think we'll be fine

First of all, let me say that I'm not judging him on one game, I simply mentioned that he seriously needs to put that one behind him. He stank. He is a beast of a player that might be really great. Size and pace are something you can't add to a player. I just think that he has shown far more effective play from 15 than 13. I'm certainly not 'trolling' unless you think he was good v. Edinburgh. If so, we are talking about entirely different scales of good and shyte.

I didn't, but when you quoted ouncer in your post I thought... hmmm. I don't think he was good last week but he started showing more in the second half and ran some nice lines off McSharry and vice versa.

FWIW I agree with your other point, I think Robbie is far better at 15 than 13, however he has shown flashes of brilliance at 13 e.g. the try he set up away to Scarlets last season, beating 3/4 players, so I'm happy to see him given a run of games there. If i doesn't work out though, I'd like to see him back at 15 where I think he's good enough to threaten RK's automatic selection for Ireland. Similarly with Ulster, I think Payne is a far better 15 than 13 and is good enough to play for Ireland there. Whether either of them will ever make it as a top-quality international 13 is debatable.

    Who's Shane Delahunt?

He was loose-head and captain of Kilkenny College. After he finished school he was moved to hooker because of the queue of loose-heads at Leinster. Played there for the Leinster u20's and briefly appeared in last years u20 6nations.

Delahunt is former KK college guy signed to academy this season.
Dundon would be good cover but its totally dependent on Strauss. How long will he be out
