Are wifi range extenders good? Do they impede on performance?

    I don't have a good connection to the router at the back of the house and was thinking about giving one of these a try...

    Would it be just as good to use an existing router with DD WRT?

    DD-WRT or OPENWRT will make a good wifi repeater. Buy a second hand router with a good wifi radio that is supported and flash a recent build.

    Wifi extender is an ambiguous term. Both of the solutions below will "extend" your wifi network, but one is very bad and the other is very good.

    Wifi repeater = a second router rebroadcasts signal from the first. Very bad, halves network bandwidth even when working perfectly.

    Better solution = Second wifi router connected to the first via ethernet or power line. Disable dhcp on one, use same wifi security settings on both.

    Or just get a powerline adapter with built in Wi-Fi, no need for a second router then.
