Any money in reference or 'topic' book writing anymore?

After going though serveral dead-end jobs I keep on coming back to the idea of writing for some income. But I can't shake the idea that books, especially general topic books, just don't sell like they used too. I'd hate to put the work in for nothing.

I just paid £60 for a book on compressed sensing, if that's any use.
