I'm torn at the moment. I can get a MacBook air 2014 model for €800 at the moment, 4gb and 128GB, or wait for the i5 8gb ram Surface for €1200.

    What would you do?

depends what you want to do

I'm not really sure. I don't see myself loving Windows 8. However if the surface pen was as good as advertised then I'd be making good use of one note. The main things I'll be doing are programming and note taking

What reservations do you have about Windows 8? Windows 8.1 is a big improvement upon the 8.0 release, and it's pretty much perfect for touch devices like the Surface Pro. It's a good note taking device because you can just click the top of the pen no matter whether the device is in standby or awake and it'll immediately open OneNote on a blank note page - really handy.

For programming, it's going to work fine, you aren't going to be able to run XCode on there thanks to Apple restricting that to OSX only, but everything else will work fine. Arguably better than a Macbook Air because you've got a much higher resolution on the SP3, which means more room for extra PuTTY windows :)

Also, on a specs comparison, you get 256Gb of hard drive space with the i5 8GB Surface. And if note-taking and programming is all you're using it for, I think you could probably get the i3 or i5/128Gb model instead, which are cheaper.

Don't suppose they are any stores in Ireland with the SP3 on display yet? Was sold on getting a Retina MacBook but came across videos of the SP again, and having second thoughts.

Surface without a doubt is the superior option.

Compared to an Air yes, compared to a Retina then it's a close tie unless you need it to be a tablet.

On sale from the 28th so roll on Thursday ;-) I'm hoping PC World in Jervis will have them to play with! According to their brochure they are giving €100 cash back on them so they seem to be even better priced then buying directly from Microsoft!!

    Cheers,
    M

That second i5 surface is wrong. It's meant to be 256GB storage.

there are 2 i5 versions, one with 128 and the other with 256. That price would indicate the former as the latter is 1329 in the online Microsoft store.

There are two on that image posted. Both say 128GB with the only difference being the RAM.

you're right, I didn't see that. Their website has incorrect listings also, listing a 10.6" screen

there have been some reports of price cuts today in the US so hopefully they'll be extended to here as well

if you "qualify" as a student you can get a reduction from the irish microsoft store too (can't rem. the prices tho')

I'm hoping to get one from the USA in the next few weeks - apart from power adaptor, there should be no issue with that should there?

You'll just need a bog standard travel adapter for it, that's it. You might want to see what happens with the warranty or how people who bought a US model and brought it back to the EU fared when something went wrong. I doubt it would be a problem and Microsoft Ireland would still take care of it but you can never be too sure. It'd suck if something went wrong and it had to be sent back to the US because only Microsoft US will take care of it.

I just checked with MS support and the warranty is worldwide. You can also pick up a power adaptor here, but it'll set you back 75 quid

You don't need a new power adapter, a travel adapter will do it fine.

PCWorld are doing a 100 euro cashback for all laptops over 700 euros (or something like that), the SP3 is included. I was also told that they are bundling the keyboard, but not sure how reliable that is. If it were true, then that's a pretty good offer.

Played with one today, very impressive hardware.

I was in there this morning and was bummed to discover they have no core i5 8GB 256 HDD units in the shop :-( I'm keen to buy from them as it's €100 cash back but I'm 99.9% sure that they are not bundling the keyboard with them!

    Thanks,
    M

No way they are bundling the keyboard for the same price as the base unit. A bundle offer where you save a few quid on the keyboard when you buy it with it maybe. Can they not order it in?

Edit: It's available on their website so they should be able to order one in. Might take a while depending on how many they have in stock.

They increased the price of the 128GB model a bit too, kinda pricey now. Whoever sells one of them will probably get the week off. :D

Front of PC world website, any laptop over €700. You claim the cash back within 60 days.

Also if you click into any of the "Show More" buttons

    http://www.pcworld.ie/PRODUCT/microsoft-surface-pro-3-12-tablet-128-gb/324265/2.9

You can see the purple notice there that mentions the product is eligible for €100 cashback.
