Short Break Edinburgh with 7 yr old

any advice on what to see and do in Edinburgh, travelling with a 7 year old in October. would the dungeon tour be too much for him? advice on where to stay, especially apartments, would be great. it looks expensive enough for tickets into places esp when you take into account the sterling/euro rate at the moment, so anywhere we can visit that is good value? i checked tesco clubcard and they don't seem to have any of their "days out" deals in Scotland, but maybe you might know where there'd be vouchers say 2 for 1 or buy one get one half price etc.
any ideas at all just dole them out, thanks. :-)
oh yes, there for 3 nights....

National Museum is free. lots of interactive exhibits for kids. We had no kids with us and really enjoyed it.

not sure if your child would be interested in this. lots of old toys going back centuries and some old clothes. free also

we didn't get to visit here as booked out when we visited. think its only 5 or 6 pounds each.

We stayed in Leith in the holiday inn. it was grand especially for the price we paid. a little far out though, bus takes about 30 mins to city centre. bus stop right outside the door though.

If you are doing the open bus tour do it on your first day as the tickets is valid for 24 hours and gives you discounts on other attractions. Also call into the tourist office near the train station as they sometimes have discount coupons.

You can get half price tickets for the dungeon handily enough, those flyers in hotel lobbys have them as do the reverse of bus tickets.
Lots of new hotels have opened up recently, there's an IBIS that's a 10 minute walk from the train station and one called Tune I believe in Haymarket, ten minutes walk to the West End (Castle side) of Princes Street.

Camera Obscura up by the castle might be an idea if you're up by the Castle one of the few days.
