Incorporated a 42km stretch of the unpaved Assietta Ridge Road into a ride on Friday. Located in the Italian Alps, all of the road is above 2,000 metres in elevation was very challenging with a surface of rock, stone, gravel and mud and includes 8 mountain passes. Managed to get through without a single puncture despite the tyres getting severe abuse - Gatorskins take a bow!

(It gave a some insight into the conditions experienced by the early pioneers of grand tour cycling when all of the Cols were unpaved).

Some pics from out on the bikes in Oregon. The mountain biking was down near Mt Hood (Sandy Ridge). Couldnt believe how few hard tails there where. Of maybe 60 bikes, I came across 1 or 2 other ones apart from my rickety 2004 HT. Probably half explains why I was constantly getting overtaken. :(

Question for the carbon wheel owners. Looking at Zyzz's pic I've long since heard that carbon wheels are crap when climbing. Is that a relic of years gone by and immature tech as i see most pros now use them on anything except HC climbs or do we not really have any climbs over here that you could really tell the difference?

AFAIK pros do use carbon wheels on HC climbs, they don't use deep section wheels though.

I think the traditional perception is that deep section carbon wheels are heavier and therefore inferior climbing.
