Rose of Tralee reveals she's gay

The interesting question is, would she have won if this information was known before the competition? As progressive as Ireland is, sadly I don't think so. We still have a long way to go in terms of being accepting, interesting on a day there's a rally in Dublin to support gay marriage.

Edit - I can't post links but it's the headline on independent . ie

Omg omg omg omg I can't believe she has tattoos and short hair

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I thought it'd be the opposite.

Not really fair on the poor escort; what chance did he have of scoring?
He is probably back in his village in Kerry looking at the bottom of a glass getting slagged by all the locals.

Single mothers can't enter it. Neither can married women!

I don't think she'd have won if they knew.

As far as I'm aware the Equal Status Act would apply to the Lovely Girls Competition too.

    Shocked & appalled.

The Sun says she is openly gay, so why did she not reveal it at the competition.

I'd say the bar on single mothers and married women could be open to challenge. They would want to ensure they're in compliance with the Equal Status act before they end up embarrassing themselves when they realise 2014 isn't 1954.

they can. They changed the rules in 2009? to allow mothers. married mothers are still excluded to the best of my knowledge.

everything's turned in to a platform for some cause, scaffolders must be the busiest people in the country!

1 theres no ban on single mothers 2 the equal atatus act is in relation to providing goods or services.

    So I doubt it.

Why should she have to? Is it a standard question for the competition?

Another quality article from the Independent.
    Did Niamh Horan write it?

I dunno lads.. I didn't watch it anyway but looked up the Independent article to see what this fuss is all about. I don't see the appeal myself regardless of whether she's gay, straight, or bi.

But then short hair and tattoos don't do it for me anyway
